Review of minutes for January 4, 2005 Food Service Advisory Meeting
Board Business
Chairman Schroeder announced at the beginning of the meeting that he was changing the
agenda around to accommodate a representative from Channel 28. He requested an
update from Larry Jones on the Smoking Ordinance. Mr. Jones advised that probably
enough signatures had been collected requiring a referendum of the voters to decide the
smoking issues in restaurants. Further, the petitions would be reviewed by City
Secretary,Amando Chapa. For the month of February 2005,Environmental Health had
received a total of eight smoking complaints. Several complaints are being resolved by
the city legal office. Discussion occurred from committee members on this issue. Dee
Haven reported the local restaurant association is not involved in obtaining signatures.
He further stated that a"Candidates Forum"was being held next Wednesday morning.
Mr. Haven does not want the smoking issue to over shadow other issues effecting the
restaurant industry.
Mr. Schroeder had asked if members had a chance to review the minutes from the
previous meeting. No corrections were noted. Motion was made and seconded to
approve the minutes.
Mr. Schroeder requested the Environmental Manager's Report. Mr. Jones stated that
several of the items in the report had been on-going topics in prior meetings. He gave an
update on personnel issues. Mr. Haven asked how qualifications differed for various
positions in Environmental Health. Mr. Jones clarified this for the committee.

He also stated he had sent an email to the department head for E-Government with the
city to obtain information toward placing the restaurant inspection scores on the city web-
site. A problem had occurred several weeks previously with the PDAs. Inkster
Information System corrected this problem upon request. Most staff are very enthusiastic
about using the PDAs. In answer to a question, only one A Rating was awarded for
month of February 2005. County food service permits are being prepared for mail-out by
clerical staff. Additionally some discussion occurred regarding individuals who may go
on-line to the Texas Restaurant Association web-site and receive formal food manager
certification.
After Chairman Schroeder requested public comment,he asked committee members for
any remaining old business.
Old Business: None
New Business: John Denson and Dee Haven discussed the forthcoming smoking
referendum with regards to actual wording being presented to the citizens of Corpus
Christi.
Mr. Jones advised the committee that Carlos Moreno had exceeded the number of
absences as specified by the city ordinance. This matter has been referred to the City
Secretary's office for appropriate action.
Dee Haven made a motion to excuse recent absences of Robert Ard due to illness.
Motion was seconded by John Denson. Motion carried.
