approved.
ATTENDANCE REVIEW: All in good standing. Prior to this meeting we
were notified that Mr. Haven is out of state and Mr. Ard's daughter
was critically injured. This meeting took place during a severe
thunderstorm and this may be the reason for Mr. Snapka's absence
today. Motion approved to excuse Mr. Haven and Mr. Ard's absence
today. Current terms for Mr. Ard and Mr. Snapka will expire
6/24/93 . They will be contacted as to whether they wish to be
reappointed.
DIRECTORS' REPORT: Statistics: Restaurant scores were not
presented, however 1/2 to 1% continue to score low. There are
1,284 restaurants with permits, including mobile units, nursing
homes and day care centers. Over 17, 000 people in the city have
Food Handler Cards; many volunteers obtain the cards. Staffing:
Environmental Health has a full staff for the first time in a long
time. How to handle salvage food: Environmental Health will teach
a 3 hour course on this topic for all persons in the community who
may handle salvage food. This was requested by the Food Bank upon
the request of HEB. Smoking Ordinance: This Committee mpde
recommendations for changes at the March meeting. The changes
should go before the Council soon; the changes would allow 50% non-
smoking seating or as requested by customers, and granting the
Director of Public Health authority to make exceptions to the 50%.
Some opposition can be expected as there are vocal citizens who
want smoking totally banned in all establishments. A new
restaurant specializing in salads has opened -as a totally non-
smoking establishment. Whataburger successfully challenged a State
suit regarding insufficient no-smoking areas.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:_ Introduced 2 new members: Food Industry
Representative Joe Gaitan, who has been with Wallbanger's
Restaurant for 9 years; and At-Large Representative Pamela Fagen,
a Registered Dietitian who has been with R. D. Enterprises for 5
years. Mr. Bell complimented Health Inspector Harvey Ausbie for
his work at Buccaneer Days and thea Multicultural Center
concessions. Former member, Melody Cooper, was. successful in her
bid for election to the City Council.
