FOOD SERVICE ADVISORY COMMITTEE
July 20, 1999 Meeting

Members Absent: Monte Thorman
Staff Present: Dr. Nina M. Sisley, M.D., Roger Barker, Jim McFarland, Steve Shepard 40)
Mr. Haven, Chair, called the meeting to order at 2:05 p.m. The minutes of the May 18, 1999
meeting were approved as written. Mr. Thorman was unable to attend the July 20th meeting due to
his work schedule. A motion was made and unanimously passed by members present to excuse
Monte Thorman's absence.
Program: Overview of HIV/AIDS-Food Service Workers was presented by David Chamberlain,
HIV/STD Educator. Mr. Chamberlain's presentation illustrated that HIV/AIDS poses little or no
threat to food service workers or customers. Mr. Chamberlain's program described what HIV is
and how it is transmitted. He briefly spoke to the Committee on Hepatitis A and its threat to the
food service worker and customers.
Environmental & Consumer Health Protection (E&CHP) Director's Report: Mr. McFarland
presented the Food Protection Activity Report for the first six months of 1999. He mentioned that
the State no longer separates Food Services and Retail Food Stores. They have now been combined
as one. Mr. McFarland mentioned that Food Service complaints are down from last year.
The City Council has filled the At-Large Committee vacancy with Mr. William Schroeder, President
of Corepest Service Co.
D.W. Haven asked Dr. Sisley if she had heard anything from the City Council regarding a No
Smoking Ordinance. Dr. Sisley mentioned that she had not heard anything from the City Council
but that more and more cities are going to Non-Smoking restaurants. Dr. Sisley mentioned that this
is a major issue right now all over the United States.
Next Meeting: The next'meeting will be held Tuesday, September 21, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at the
Corpus Christi—Nueces County Public Health Department, 1702 Home Road, Administration
Conference Room.
