CALL TO ORDER CITY SECRETARY'S OFFICE Chairperson Ramiro Gamboa called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. A. REQUESTS FOR EXCUSED ABSENCES MOTION Motion to excuse Abel Alonzo, Robert Franklin and Pastor Derrick Reaves for the October 7, 2010 meeting made by Robert Garza and seconded by Kathleen Cooper. Motion passed. 2. APPROVAL OF REGULAR MEETING MINUTES OF 09102110 MOTION Motion to approve the September 2, 2010 meeting minutes made by Robert Adler and seconded by Robert Garza. Motion passed. 3. PUBLIC COMMENTS (LIMITED TO 3 MINUTES] None 4. PRESENTATIONS A. PresentationlRequest for Support— Felix Longoria Recognition Event— Dr. Nick Adame Professor Patrick Carroll from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi asked for the Commission's support to award $250.00 to help defray the $1,000 cost of the October 25, 2010 screening for the upcoming PBS documentary entitled The Longoria Affair at the Q Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Performing Arts Center at 7:00 p.m. The J documentary will be aired on November 9, 2010 through the Boston PBS station and will be aired nationally on the series Independent Lens. The Longoria Affair deals with a civil rights case in the greater Coastal Bend Area which took place in January 1949. Decorated war hero, Felix Longoria, was killed in 1945 in WWII and his widow asked that his body be U buried in his hometown in Three Rivers, Texas. The funeral director for Mr. Longoria's C/3 funeral refused to bury the body of Mr. Longoria. The funeral director, on more than one occasion, indicated to his widow and three other individuals that the whites would not like to bury "a Mexican" - all who testified being true. Professor Carroll indicated the screening will also be held at other universities across Texas and will all assist in covering the costs. Page 1 of 2 5. CHAIRPERSON'S REPORT A. DiscussionlApproval of Felix Longoria Recognition Event Support MOTION Motion to support the screening of The Longoria Affair with a $250.00 sponsorship made by Robert Adler and seconded by Robert Garza. Housing Subcommittee Margie Myers reported the following: • Attorney General Abbott Signs Agreement with Wells Fargo Resulting in Mortgage Relief— More than 200 distressed Texas homeowners to get help with loans (A copy of the October 8,2019 Press Rebase Y attached lathe bast MIS minutes.) • Attorney General Abbott Calls for a Halt on Foreclosures while Loan Services Review their Business Practices—Abbott calls for thorough review to determine if "robosigners" were used in foreclosure paperwork processing (A copy of the Weep 52019P!keStiese030 back of the misters) B. Committee for Persons With Disabilities — 10106/10 Meeting Leon Bazar reported the following: • Elected a Vice-Chair - Carlos Vargas, MV Transportation General Manager • Discussed major projects that impact the community —Water Street from Cooper's Alley to 1-37, all new sidewalks and curb ramps. Joint project: City of Corpus Christi and TxDOT. Also discussed the ADA Group 1 project that addressed 360 ramps throughout the City of Corpus Christi • Discussed the privatization of the Golf Course —The South Texas Lighthouse for the Blind has the concession contract. The Committee wanted to ensure that those employees were still going to have an opportunity to continue working under the new management. C. Education Subcommittee— No Report D. Disparity Subcommittee— No Report E. Health Disparity Subcommittee— No Report 7. HUMAN RELATIONS ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT A. Department Monthly Performance Report Review • September 301h was the end of the EEOC contract year • Target/Contract Obligation was to close 104 charges (10/01/09 —09/3010) - the department closed 109 cases • Met intake goal of 121 intakes for the year • Closed 5 HUD cases (Total of 12 cases closed in 3 months) • Mr. Bazar is scheduled to present the department's annual presentation to the City Council on October 12, 2010 • Mr. Bazar continues to work on Las Colonias Subdivision project 8. IDENTIFY ITEMS TO BE PLACED ON NEXT AGENDA • Bob Jones —Texas Housing Development Corporation 9. ADJOURNMENT MOTION Motion to adjourn the meeting made by Elias Valverde and seconded by Toni Davis.
