Summary of Minutes for March 1, 2012
1. CALL TO ORDER
Chairperson Ramiro Gamboa called the meeting to order at 5:04 p.m.

B. REQUESTS FOR EXCUSED ABSENCES
MOTION Motion to excuse Janet Zuniga and Elias Valverde for the March 1, 2012 meeting made by
Commissioner Alonzo and seconded by Commissioner Franklin. Motion passed.
2. APPROVAL OF REGULAR MEETING MINUTES OF 01/05/12
MOTION Motion to approve the January 5, 2012 meeting minutes with revisions made by
Commissioner Cooper and seconded by Commissioner Davis. Motion passed. Revision:
On page 1, Item 2. corrected to reflect Youth Commissioner Mendiola as an excused
absent rather than an unexcused absent.
3. PUBLIC COMMENTS (LIMITED TO 3 MINUTES)
None
4. PRESENTATIONS
A. State Rep. Todd Hunter (R. Corpus Christi) - Human Trafficking in Texas
Todd Hunter discussed the issues of Human Trafficking. Mr. Hunter mentioned he will be a
part of the free Human Trafficking Summit Event on March 29th at Del Mar College from
8am -4pm.
5. Chairpersons Report
• NAACP and LULAC Banquet
Chairperson Gamboa mentioned the NAACP and the LULAC held banquets to
acknowledge community leaders and that both banquets were very nice and
informational.

• Annual Retreat to include CFPWD members
Mr. Gamboa stated that he requested to Ms. Wilson to setup an Annual Retreat to
include the Committee for Persons with Disabilities board members and RTAC. Ms.
Wilson mentioned that the Committee for Persons with Disabilities board members
accepted the request for an Annual Retreat. The RTAC is in the process of getting the
RTA to sponsor the event sometime in June or July. for not only the CFPWD but also
to be joined with the CCHRC. Plans are to get the RTA to prepare a presentation
regarding the day to day process of transportation for people with disabilities and the
obstacles the drivers face with the City Street construction sites. Also showing how
the bus routes and people with mobility issues are affected by ongoing construction
as well.
• Subcommittee for reappointments and new
appointments
Mr. Gamboa designated Kathleen Cooper, Abel Alonzo, and Denise Villagran to
serve on the Subcommittee. Reappointments are Edna Arredondo, Toni Davis, Lucy
Reta, Brianna Mendiola and Janet Zuniga. New appointment would be to fill the youth
seat vacated by Youth Commissioner Jacob Sendejar. Mr. Gamboa designated
Denise Villagran to be chair for the subcommittee.
MOTION Motion to approve the subcommittee members Cooper, Alonzo, and Denise made by
Commissioner Alonzo and seconded by Commissioner Franklin. Motion passed.
7. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS
A. Housing Subcommittee
No Report.
B. Committee for Persons With Disabilities
No Report. CFPWD next meeting will be 03/07/12.
C. Education Subcommittee
No Report
D. Disparity Subcommittee
No Report. Mr. Gamboa designated Commissioner Abel Alonzo to join the Disparity
Subcommittee. Mr. Alonzo accepted the offer.
6. HUMAN RELATIONS ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT
A. Department Monthly Performance Report Review
Sylvia Wilson provided the February 2012 Monthly Performance Report. Highlights of
division activity arovided.
B. Department Update
Ms. Wilson introduced Carlos Vargas as the new Chairperson for the Human Relations
Commission.

MOTION Motion to adjourn the meeting made by Commissioner Reaves and seconded by
Commissioner Cooper. Motion passed. The meeting adjourned at 5:47 p.m.
