CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Ramiro Gamboa called the meeting to order at 5:08 p.m. A. ROLL CALL Present Commissioners: Ramiro H. APPROVAL OF REGULAR MEETING MINUTES OF 07/05/12 MOTION Motion — Margie Myers Second — Kathleen Cooper Passed 3. PUBLIC COMMENTS (LIMITED TO 3 MINUTES) Tom Tagliabue, Director of Intergovernmental Relations with the City of Corpus Christi mentioned he was a Youth Commissioner 30 years ago. Mr. Tagliabue offered his support and knowledge to the current Youth Commissioners. 4. PRESENTATIONS A. Diversity of City Employees and Human Resources programs — Yasmine Chapman, City Human Resources Ms. Chapman discussed the workforce diversity statistics sheet that was distributed to the Commissioner. (A copy of the handout is attached at the back of the minutes) B. Operation Safe Return /Back to School Safety Program — By Family Violence and Crime Prevention Division Sr. Officer Emily Perez, mentioned the Operation Safe Return that was held on 07/21/12 at West Guth Park targeted for the Tuloso- Midway ISD, West Oso ISD, and the Calallen ISD students. Sr. Officer Perez welcomed the Youth Commissioners and Commissioners to be a part of the Operation Safe Return Event held for the CCISD and Flour Bluff students on 08/25/12 at the Sun Rise Mall though the time of the event will begin had not been stated. (A copy of the handouts attached at the end of the minutes) Page 1 of 7 5. Discussion /Action A. Recommendation of new appointment to replace Commissioner Robert Franklin 1St Recommendation ,Joel Mumphord MOTION Motion — Kathleen Cooper Second — Abel Alonzo Passed 2nd Recommendation, Mary Wambach Motion — Kathleen Cooper Second — Mickey Kramer Passed 3rd Recommendation, Almira Flores Motion — Abel Alonzo Second — Edna Arredondo Passed 6. Chairpersons Report A. Mayor's confirmation of Chairperson Mayor Adame accepted the Commission's recommendation to allow current Chairperson Ramiro Gamboa to continue as Chairperson for another term. B. Discussion /Action: on appointment of Vice - Chairperson Nomination of Abel Alonzo to replace Denise Villagran as Vice - Chairperson Motion — Edna Arredondo Second — Kathleen Cooper Passed C. Discussion /Action: on implementation of goals Edna Arredondo stated the Commission will have representation at the Walk n' Roll on September 29 2012. No Action was taken at this time. D. Discussion /Action: Tribute to former Mayor Ben Mc Donald Chairperson Gamboa mentioned ex -Mayor Ben Mc Donald passed away. Mr. Gamboa talked about Mr. Mc Donald's accomplishments and mentioned how Mr. Mc Donald founded the Corpus Christi Human Relations Commission. Mr. Gamboa asked the Commission for support to make a Proclamation to be presented to the family of ex- Mayor Mc Donald also having prior Human Relations directors, dignitaries such as LULAC, NAACP including the CCHRC attend the Proclamation Ceremony. Committee for Persons With Disabilities CFPWD Chairperson Vargas gave brief update on the Committee meeting held on 07/11/12 and mentioned the Committee was unable to attend 08/01/12 due to a Posting Error. C. Education Subcommittee — No Report D. Disparity Subcommittee — No Report E. Goals Update — Youth Commissioner Justin Cortez on Operation Safe Return Ms. Wilson, Human Relations Administrator, mentioned Commissioner Cortez was unable to attend to give his update however; Mr. Cortez was able to volunteer to assist the CCPD Crime Victims table on short notice and collected information that has been distributed to the commission. (A copy of the information is attached at the back of the minutes) 8. HUMAN RELATIONS ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT E. Department Monthly Performance Report Review Mrs. Wilson provided the July 2012 Monthly Performance Report. Highlights of division activity provided. Research shows this can stop bullying behavior over time There are simple steps adults can take to stop edifying on the spot and keep kids safe. DO: m Intervone immediately.
