Corpus Christi Human Relations Commission Summary of Minutes for September 06, 2012 MOTION 2. MOTION 3 1. CALL TO ORDER Vice - Chairperson Abel Alonzo called the meeting to order at 5:08 p.m. Sylvia Wilson announced the resignation of Denise Villagran, and thus informed the Commission of a vacancy. A. Motion- Elias Valverde Second — Mickey Kramer Passed APPROVAL OF REGULAR MEETING MINUTES OF 07/05/12 Motion — Mickey Kramer Second —Toni Davis Passed PUBLIC COMMENTS (LIMITED TO 3 MINUTES) Donnie Contreras, Costal Bend Walk n' Roll Event, informed the Commissioners on the Walk n' Roll Event and its history. Mr. Contreras encouraged the Commission to join him at the Event on September 29th at 8 a.m. 4. PRESENTATIONS A. Fair Housing Act as it relates to City of Corpus Christi Ordinance by June Martinez, Fair Housing Compliance Officer, Human Relations Division Ms. Martinez spoke about the Fair Housing, Employment, Public Accommodations and the Americans with Disabilities Act. (A copy of the handout is attached at the back of the minutes) 6. Chairpersons Report A. Introduction of new Commissioner, Joel Mumphord Vice - Chairperson Alonzo introduced Mr. Mumphord to the Commissioners. Mr. Mumphord thanked the members of the Commission for their recommendation to the Mayor. Page 1 of 6 B. Ben Mc Donald Acknowledgment Ms. Wilson announced the idea of the proclamation was brought to the attention of the City Secretary's Office and it was suggested that the Commission take a different route. The City Council changed the name of the Greenwood Library to the Ben Mc Donald Library. Ms. Wilson gave suggestions the Commission regarding different routes that may be taken. 7. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS A. Housing Subcommittee — No Report B. Committee for Persons With Disabilities CFPWD Chairperson Vargas gave brief update on the Committee meeting held on 09/05/12. C. Education Subcommittee — EEOC Youth @ Work PowerPoint Update Commissioner Cooper stated the Subcommittee did meet and reviewed the EEOC Youth @ Work PowerPoint and decided to make some changes. Ms. Cooper shared ideas the Subcommittee had with the Commission. D. Disparity Subcommittee — No Report E. Goals Update — Discussion /Possible Action on CCHRC Goals and attendance at Operation Safe Return 08/25/12 Update Youth Commissioner Salazar and Commissioner Kramer gave the update and insight on Operation Safe Return and mentioned how many people didn't know the City had a Commission or if they did then they weren't sure as to what the Commission did for the community. Ms. Cooper also gave goals update regarding future events the Commission will take part of involving the community and area High Schools. Commissioner Arredondo also gave brief information pertaining to the Miracle League of Corpus Christi. (A copy of the Miracle League information is attached at the back of the minutes) 8. HUMAN RELATIONS ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT C. Department Monthly Performance Report Review Mrs. Wilson provided the August 2012 Monthly Performance Report. Highlights of division activity provided. (A copy of the report is attached at the back of the minutes) 9. DENTIFY ITEMS TO BE PLACED ON NEXT AGENDA • Nominate /Recommendation to fill vacancy to replace Denise Villagran 10.
