CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Ramiro Gamboa called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. A. ROLL CALL Present Commissioners: Ramiro Gamboa Abel Alonzo Carlos Vargas Edna Arredondo Kathleen Cooper Toni Davis Joel Mumphord Margie Myers Pastor Derrick Reaves Mickey Kramer Present Staff: Sylvia Wilson (Human Relations) Eleni Salazar (Youth Commissioner) Christina Aparicio (Human Relations) Absent Commissioners: Carlos Aguinaga (Excused) Elias Valverde (Excused) Grace Roberson (Youth Commissioner) Justin Cortez (Youth Commissioner) B. REQUESTS FOR EXCUSED ABSENCES Carlos Aguinaga and Elias Valverde for 1014112 monthly meeting. Motion- Mickey Kramer Second — Toni Davis Passed APPROVAL OF REGULAR MEETING MINUTES OF 07/05/12 Motion — Abel Alonzo Second — Kathleen Cooper Passed PUBLIC COMMENTS (LIMITED TO 3 MINUTES) Donnie Contreras, Costal Bend Walk n' Roll Event, informed the Commissioners on the Walk n' Roll Event and its history. Mr. Contreras encouraged the Commission to join him at the Event on September 29th at 8 a.m. 4. PRESENTATIONS A. Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation Academy Update, Patsy Garcia, ADA Compliance Officer, Human Relations Division Ms Garcia spoke about the TDLR Academy she attended in Austin, TX. B. U. S. Department of Justice Video - "Ten Small Business Mistakes," Patsy Garcia, ADA Compliance Officer, Human Relations Davison Mrs. Garcia gave the Commissioners an informational flyer with the titles of the ten small business mistakes. Mrs. Garcia showed a Video Describing the "Ten Small Business Mistakes" (A copy of the flyer is attached at the end of the minutes) 6. Chairpersons Report A. Ben Mc Donald Library Dedication Chairperson Gamboa mentioned that Mrs. Wilson along with other Commissioners attended the Library Dedication. Chairperson announced that he would like the Page 1 of 4 Commission to do its own presentation /dedication for Mr. Mc Donald to the Mc Donald family. B. 9122 NAACP /LULAC Health Fair Update Chairperson Gamboa mentioned the Health Fair was a great success; Christina gave the update to the Commissioners mentioning over 300 people stop by the Human Relations table for the PowerPoint presentation, advice, information, asked questions, and picked up questionnaires. 7. STAUS UPDATE REGARDING FILLING COMMISSIONER VACANCY Mr. Gamboa announced the months of elections the City Council will not be doing any appointing of new members to City boards, commissions, or committee members. The appointing process may begin in December or January depending if there will be a runoff. 8. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS A. Housing Subcommittee — No Report B. Committee for Persons With Disabilities CFPWD Chairperson Vargas gave brief update on the Committee meeting held on 09/05/12. C. Education Subcommittee — Katy Cooper and Youth Commissioners Commissioner Cooper mentioned she and Sylvia attended the Flour Bluff ISD and did a verbal presentation giving information on what the Human Relations Commission and office does. Ms. Cooper requested permission to attend the CCISD Board to do the same presentation that was done for FBISD. Chairperson Gamboa gave permission and decided to allow Ms. Cooper to make any necessary decisions without his permission. Commissioners Kramer, Eleni Salazar, and Wanese Butler with Human Relations office attended Moody High School to do the EEOC Youth @ Work Presentation to students during a Career Development Class. Ms. Butler was able to assist with questions from the students. D. Disparity Subcommittee — No Report E. Goals Update — Update by Edna Arredondo Commissioner Arredondo gave an update and thanked Commissioners for attending the Walk n' Roll Event held on 9/29/12. In spite of the rain the event had a great turn out with over 300 attendees. 9. HUMAN RELATIONS ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT C. Department Monthly Performance Report Review Mrs. Wilson provided the September 2012 Monthly Performance Report. Highlights of division activity provided.
