CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Gamboa called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. A. APPROVAL OF REGULAR MEETING MINUTES OF 03/07/13 MOTION Motion — Kathleen Cooper Second — Elias Valverde Pass 4. PUBLIC COMMENTS (LIMITED TO 3 MINUTES) 1. June Martinez of the Human Relations Division announced the partnership between the Human Relations Division, Islander Human Rights Organization and the Jewish Center regarding the Days of Remembrance of Victims of the Holocaust. Mrs. Martinez invited the commission to attend and join the collaboration of entities to accept the Days of Remembrance proclamation by the Mayor on April 9t" in the City Council Chambers at 11:30 a.m. Mrs. Martinez stated the proclamation would be accepted by one of the Holocaust survivor who is a resident of Corpus Christi. Mrs. Martinez continued sharing other interesting information regarding the Holocaust. 5. PRESENTATIONS a. EEOC Youth @ Work Presentation - by Youth Commissioners The Youth Commissioners; Grace Roberson, Eleni Salazar and Corey Elizondo took turns discussing the PowerPoint presentation slides. This presentation was followed by comments and questions by various commissioners. (A copy of the PowerPoint is attached at the end of the minutes) Page 1 of 10 b. April Fair Housing Presentation - by Wanese Butler, Outreach Coordinator, Human Relations Division Mrs. Butler of the Human Relations Division gave a PowerPoint presentation on the Fair Housing Act to the Commissioners. This presentation was followed by comments and questions by various commissioners. Mrs. Butler invited the commission to take part in accepting a second proclamation to proclaim Fair Housing Month in Corpus Christi on April 9th at 11:30 a.m. She then continued to update the Commission on outreach events the Human Relations Division would be taking part in throughout the community regarding Fair Housing during the month of April. (A copy of the PowerPoint is attached at the end of the minutes) 6. CHAIRPERSON'S REPORT a. Retreat with Committee for People with Disabilities (CFPWD) and RTA Committee on Accessible Transportation (RCAT) Mr. Gamboa requested the Commission staff members set up a meeting to meet with Commissioners Edna Arredondo, Elias Valverde, Carlos Vargas, and himself to discuss the Retreat date, time and location. 7. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS a. Housing Subcommittee — Update by Margie Myers Ms. Myers stated Ted Jones form the real estate research center was surprised to see 7,700 new jobs created in Corpus Christi by small business not by government jobs. He was also impressed by the number of building permits showing an increase in the housing market in Corpus Christi. a. Committee for Persons With Disabilities — 413113 Meeting Update by Carlos Vargas Chairperson Vargas gave a brief update on the 03/06/13 Committee Meeting. Mr. Vargas announced the change in Chairmanship stating the new Committee for Persons with Disabilities is Darren Bates. b. Education Subcommittee — Update by Kathleen Cooper Commissioner Cooper stated Commissioner Kramer, Mrs. Wilson and herself attended a meeting on April 26th and gave a presentation to the CCISD councilors from various schools regarding the goals of the Educational Subcommittee. Commissioner Kramer commended Mrs. Cooper on her presentation to the councilors stating the information was very informational and the councilors were excited to have the Educational Subcommittee share the Youth @ Work presentation to the CCISD High Schools. Mr. Kramer then stated it was now a matter of organizing and scheduling dates with the high schools and because it is already late in this school year the Educational Subcommittee may not be able to reach out to any schools this year till next year. c. Disparity Subcommittee — No Report d. Goals Subcommittee— Update on 2nd Annual Retreat - Edna Arredondo Ms. Arredondo stated she attended an RCAT meeting where the 2nd Annual Retreat was up for discussion and stated Rosa Villarreal the RTA Operations Manager agreed to organize the event. Mrs. Wilson stated she would include Ms. Villarreal in the Retreat meeting along with the designated Commissioners. Page 2 of 10 10. HUMAN RELATIONS ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT A. Monthly Department Performance Report Mrs. Wilson suggested the Commission create a subcommittee to organize the Human Relations Commission 50th Anniversary events. Further information regarding the 50th Anniversary subcommittee and possible events was shared by Mrs. Wilson. Chairperson Gamboa approved and agreed with Mrs. Wilson's suggestion to create a subcommittee. Mr. Gamboa elected Commissioners; Pastor Derrick Reaves, Carlos Vargas, Joel Mumphord, Abel Alonzo and legal advisor Jodie Leak as subcommittee members. Mr. Gamboa agreed to continue discussion of the 50th Anniversary Subcommittee on 5/1/13. Mrs. Wilson provided the March 2013 Monthly Performance Report with highlights of Division activity. B. Texas Diversity Council, Update Mrs. Wilson stated majority of the funds have been found, however, budget is still working on the budgeting aspect for the remainder of the funds. Mrs. Wilson stated she was positive the funds would be located so the Commission can be members of the Texas Diversity Council. C. Proclamation of Days of Remembrance, April 9th Mrs. Wilson stated the proclamation was previously discussed under Item 5. (A copy of the report and other handouts are attached at the back of the minutes) 11.
