CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Kramer called the meeting to order at 5:01 p.m. A. REQUESTS AND APPROVALS FOR EXCUSED ABSENCES – None 3. APPROVAL OF REGULAR MEETING MINUTES OF 4.05.18 Motion – Laura Commons Second – Linda Cantu Motion Passed 4. PUBLIC COMMENTS (LIMITED TO 3 MINUTES) - None 5. PRESENTATIONS: A. Update on Citizens Alliance for Fairness and Progress – April Bassett stated she had no update and that the next meeting will be May 31, 2018. 6. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS A. Housing Subcommittee – Laura Commons had no update on the housing market and Nora Mireles commented on the rental dwellings market and handed out a current report. (Copy of the handout is attached to the Minutes.) B. Committee for Persons with Disabilities – Mr. Balli stated there was no meeting on May 2nd due to no quorum. He reported on the April 7th Special Olympics event, the Walk for Autism on April 21st and the meeting at the Greenwood Community Center on April 11, 2018. MOTION Page 2 of 6 C. Education Subcommittee – Zoya Surani reported on the Youth at Work presentation at Veterans Memorial High School on April 27th. D. Scholarship Program Subcommittee – Sylvia Wilson provided a brief history on past efforts in connection with the scholarship program and current financial issues. Dr. Benibo proposed that the subcommittee be dissolved at the present time. MOTION – Dr. Bilaye Benibo SECOND – Linda Cantu MOTION PASSED 7. HUMAN RELATIONS ADMINISTRATOR’S REPORT – Sylvia Wilson reported on the statistics from the April 2018 Performance Report and the Fair Housing Seminar held on April 27th at the Del Mar Economic Center. She also informed the Commission of the upcoming Fair Housing seminar in June for the Corpus Christi Housing Association. The commissioners were reminded of the current vacancies and those whose terms expire June 14, 2018. A flyer for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing Center’s Open House & College Day on May 18th, 2018 was handed out. (Copies of the performance report and Deaf & Hard of Hearing Center handout are attached to the Minutes.) 8. CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT - Mr. Kramer stated he had no report. He mentioned that Maria Rodriguez, April Bassett, and Jeremy Coleman had expressed an interest in serving as Chairperson. Carlos Aguinaga recommended Dr. Stock and Linda Cantu recommended Laura Commons. Mrs. Wilson stated that the requests would be sent to the Mayor’s office and that he makes the decision. Mr. Kramer encouraged the commissioners to attend the HOSPIS award ceremony on May 8th at the Harbor Playhouse. The annual event honors individuals in the tourism and meeting industry. 9. Identify Items to be placed on next Agenda • Bart Brazelton on affordable housing issues • Richard Balli on the accessible PSA • Update on Citizens Alliance for Fairness and Progress 10.
