Summary of Minutes for June 7, 2018
1. CALL TO ORDER
Chairperson Kramer called the meeting to order at 5:05 p.m.

2. REQUESTS AND APPROVALS FOR EXCUSED ABSENCES – Carlos Aguinaga,
Maria Rodriguez, Zoya Surani and John Williamson were out of town and requested
excused absences which were approved.

3. APPROVAL OF REGULAR MEETING MINUTES OF 5.03.18

4. PUBLIC COMMENTS (LIMITED TO 3 MINUTES) - None
5. PRESENTATIONS:
A. Bart Braselton – Affordable housing impacted by new Harbor Bridge
Mr. Braselton discussed affordable housing programs in the Corpus Christi area and
the challenges associated with qualifying for them. He stated there is a need for a
centralized program to promote affordable housing in the area so the families in the
Hillcrest neighborhood can relocate. Mr. Braselton also commented on the need for
coordination in City departments that deal with housing and the possibility of the City
waiving some fees associated with the construction of affordable homes. Mr.
Braselton answered questions from the commissioners and welcomed any support
the Commission could offer.

B. Update on Citizens Alliance for Fairness and Progress – April Bassett stated she
had no update.
6. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS
A. Housing Subcommittee – Laura Commons provided a handout and commented
on the Corpus Christi Housing Report for April 2018. Nora Mireles reported on
the current rental dwellings market and the Fair Housing Seminar on June 21,
2018 at Solomon Ortiz Center. (Copies of the handouts are attached to the
Minutes.)
B. Committee for Persons with Disabilities – Mr. Balli stated there was no meeting
on June 6th due to no quorum. He brought the PSA on accessible parking and
showed it to the commissioners. It was suggested that the PSA be shared on social
media to make more citizens aware of the issues.
C. Education Subcommittee – No update
7. HUMAN RELATIONS ADMINISTRATOR’S REPORT – Sylvia Wilson reported on
the outreach planned for Friday, June 8th, Pride Downtown event, the Storm Expo
event on June 16th at the American Bank Center, the annual Corpus Christi
Apartment Association Fair Housing Seminar on June 21st at the Solomon Ortiz
Center and the City Hall in the Mall event scheduled for June 30th. Ms. Wilson
referred to the May 2018 Performance Report that had been passed out and
presented Mr. Kramer with an appreciation award for his six years of service on the
Commission. (A copy of the Performance Report is attached to the Minutes.)
8. CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT - Mr. Kramer stated he had no report but wanted to
thank everyone for their hard work on the Commission and wished them continued
success in the future.
9. Identify Items to be placed on next Agenda
• Mr. Kramer suggested Christina Butler from Coastal Bend Center for
Independent Living speak on programs offered by CBCIL.
• April Bassett suggested Violet Russell with ABCD New Edition make a
presentation to the Commission.
• Update on Citizens Alliance for Fairness and Progress
