Summary of Minutes for September 6, 2018
1. CALL TO ORDER
Chairperson Laura Commons called the meeting to order at 5:04 p.m.

2. REQUESTS AND APPROVALS FOR EXCUSED ABSENCES – Nora Mireles was
unable to attend the September meeting due to a work commitment and June Martinez
was absent from the August meeting due to a medical issue. Excused absences were
requested and approved.

3. INTRODUCTION OF NEW MEMBERS, Rachel Benavides and June Martinez were
introduced and provided some information on their background.
4. APPROVAL OF REGULAR MEETING MINUTES OF 8.02.18
Motion – Dr. Roy Stock Second – Dr. Bilaye Benibo Motion Passed
5. PUBLIC COMMENTS (LIMITED TO 3 MINUTES) - None
6. PRESENTATIONS:
A. Senior Companion Program – Diane Taylor, Project Director
Ms. Taylor provided an overview on the program, information on the efforts to assist
the elderly population around the Coastal Bend and answered questions from the
commissioners. Mr. Balli requested that Ms. Taylor make a presentation at the
October meeting of the Committee for Persons With Disability. A handout was
passed out and a copy is attached to the Minutes.
B. Public Information Office – Use of Social Media – Tabled for now
C. Update on Citizens Alliance for Fairness and Progress – No report

7. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS
A. Housing Subcommittee – Linda Cantu provided a handout and commented on
the Corpus Christi and Nueces County Housing Reports for June 2018. Nora
Mireles was not present but sent a handout on the August 2018 rental dwellings
market. (Copies of the handouts are attached to the Minutes.)
B. Committee for Persons with Disabilities – Mr. Balli reported on the August 2018
ADA citations and the League of Women Voters presentation made at the
September meeting.
C. Education Subcommittee – No update. Sylvia Wilson stated that there are
currently no youth commissioner applications with the City Secretary’s Office and
she would provide a letter she has used in the past to recruit students to serve on
the Commission.
8. HUMAN RELATIONS ADMINISTRATOR’S REPORT – Sylvia Wilson stated she
had passed out a Proposed 2018 Bond Program for the Commissioners to review
and reported on the statistics from the August 2018 Performance Report. (A copy of
the Performance Report is attached to the Minutes.)
9. CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT - Mrs. Commons commented on the need to make
the community more aware of the Commission and available programs. Mrs. Wilson
encouraged the Commissioners to offer suggestions for possible outreach
opportunities.
10. Identify Items to be placed on next Agenda
• Presentation by Public Information Office regarding use of social media
• Update on Citizens Alliance for Fairness and Progress
