CALL MEETING TO ORDER: The Chairperson called the meeting to order at 5:05 PM 2. ROLL CALL: Present Commissioners: Crystal Lyons, Errol Summerlin, Dr. Clifton Baldwin, Dr. Stuart Elovitz, Lucy Reta, 0. K. Smith, Tony Bonilla, Thomas Lopez, Albert Santoya Post Roll Call Arrivals: Absent Commissioners: Robert Adler, Gilbert Fuentes, Dr. Carol Ledbetter, Jennifer Starr, Sam Watson Staff in Attendance: • Mr. Leon Bazar, Ms. Wanese Butler, Mr. Joseph Harney, Ms. April Moffett 3. EXCUSED ABSENCES: none 4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: MOTION: The minutes were read and approved as written. 5. ANNOUNCEMENTS/ INTRODUCTIONS I PRESENTATIONS: none 6. CHAIRPERSON'S REPORT: • The chairperson thanked Leon Bazar and Linda Faliwell-Stover for having Aaron McCullough here for training. The Information was helpful. • Crystal Lyons asked for the questionnaires that were issued at the July 7th meeting to be returned to her. • Ms. Lyons stated that she has reviewed the Human Relation's Ordinance so she would have more insight on what this Commission is about. • The Apartment Association will encourage candidates to apply with the City Secretary's office for replacing Leah Patterson on the Commission. • Crystal Lyons passed out a list of goals for the Commission. 7. COMMISSION SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS: (Discussion with Possible Action) A. Housing Subcommittee—0. K. Smith 1. Fair Housing Brochure—0. K. Smith 0. K. Smith mentioned that the brochures are in print now. The Commissioners suggested placing the brochure at the libraries and on the Human Relations web site. The plan is still to utilize the utilities bill for distribution. 2. Rental Dwellings— Leah Patterson: none B. Committee for Persons with Disabilities —Linda Faliwell-Stover Linda Faliwell-Stover informed the Commission that Ms. Caraway from the Human Resource Department met with the Committee for Persons with Disabilities on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 regarding the Title I Employment Comprehensive Self CCHRC 8/4/05 1 SCANH. 'I Corpus Christi Human Relations Commission Summary Minutes for August 4, 2005 Evaluation. The Committee members are concerned that the City of Corpus Christi does not have an affirmative action plan. Ms. Faliwell-Stover also informed the Commission that there will be several members from the Committee working with Ms. Caraway on this project. C. Education Subcommittee—Dr. Carol Ledbetter: Albert Santoya—The Education Subcommittee met and they would like to educate youth on work discrimination. They have decided to hold a press conference and to use the school newspapers as an education tool. All three of the Youth Commissioners will be presenters at the press conference. The Chairperson requested a presentation from the Education Subcommittee at the next meeting 8. OLD BUSINESS: (Discussion with Possible Action): none 9. NEW BUSINESS: (Discussion with Possible Action): none 10.ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT—Mr. Bazar: • Mr. Bazar and Mr. McCullough will be meeting every three months. • Ms. Butler provided information. The Human Relations Department has purchased ramps so people can have access to the polls. • October is Disabilities Employment Awareness Month—The Committee for Persons with Disabilities will be planning actives in October. Any information about companies that employ persons with disabilities will be helpful. Dr. Baldwin requested that each Commissioner be contacted so that input can be given. • On Aug. 23rd the City Council meeting will be closed captioned for the first time. • Mr. Bazar gave a Human Relations Departmental status report • The Collaborative Inclusion Event was well received. Twenty-seven representatives of various boards and commissions attend the training session featuring Aaron McCullough that was held in the La Retama Room and the Central Library. • Mr. Bazar has asked to attend the Zoning Commission meetings to provide input on curb ramps and sidewalks. • The EEOC contract has been renewed this year. It is contracted for 106 and 147 EEOC intake cases. 11.PUBLIC COMMENTS/CONCERNS I ITEMS FOR NEXT AGENDA: • Mr. Summerlin spoke and asked the Commissioners to remember that this Human Relations Commission was the first commission established in the state in Texas as a result of the civil rights movement and he asked us to not forget that other discrimination is still occurring.
