CALL MEETING TO ORDER JUN 052009 Vice Chairperson Errol Summerlin, called the meeting to order !grAHY$OFF7CE A. REQUESTS FOR EXCUSED ABSENCES Vice Chairperson Mr. Summerlin stated there was one request for excused absences for the March 5, 2009 meeting. Motion to excuse Dr. Chon-Kyun Kim for the March 5, 2009 meeting made by Robert Adler and seconded by Abel Alonzo. Motion passed. Mr. Summerlin also stated there were four requests for excused absences for the April 2, 2009 meeting. Motion to excuse Ramiro Gamboa, Patricia Mattocks, Pastor Derrick Reaves and Robert Bonner for the April 2, 2009 meeting made by Jacob Sendejar and seconded by Margie Myers. Motion passed. 2. APPROVAL OF REGULAR MEETING MINUTES OF 03/05109 Mr. Summerlin called for approval of the March 5, 2009 Meeting Minutes. Motion to approve the March 5, 2009 meeting minutes made by Robert Adler and seconded by Staci Alanis. Motion passed. 3. PUBLIC COMMENTS (LIMITED TO 3 MINUTES) Mr. Summerlin asked if there were any Public Comments. There were none. 4. PRESENTATIONS A. EEOC Update and FEPA Status—Jaime Valdez, EEOC FEPA Compliance Officer Jaime Valdez provided handouts with information on what a person should know before they file a charge with EEOC, EEOC Coordination with Fair Employment Practice Agencies and a Glossary of Terms. (Copies of the handouts are attached to the back of the minutes.) Mr. Valdez explained the process and statistics regarding EEOC cases for the past few years. He also reiterated the good work the EEOC and the Human Relations Department are doing despite the increase in complaints being received. SCANNED Page 1 of 2 B. What Would 4.11 Do?— "Racism" 1r/ Presentation was postponed due to technical difficulties. 5. CHAIRPERSON'S REPORT— NO REPORT 6. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS A. Housing Subcommittee—April 25th Rental Properties Workshop Margie Myers spoke regarding the Rental Properties: Fair Housing Compliance educational seminar to be held on Saturday, April 25th, 2009 at the Museum of Science & History. (A copy of the Rental Properties:Fair Housing Compliance flyer is attached to the back of the minutes.) B. Committee For Persons with Disabilities— Recap of 04101109 Meeting Highlights Abel Alonzo reported the following: • City Manager Angel Escobar spoke at the meeting and supports ADA City-Wide and open communications for the CFPWD with other City departments. • Miracle League Baseball Field - the Rotary Club project is expected to be completed by the Spring of 2010. • Homeless Initiative Funds - the funds assist persons in finding a place to live. Agencies will be asked to submit proposals to receive funds in order to assist people in need. • The CDBG will present a presentation on April 14, 2009 to Council which will focus on a $1 million in engineering projects for ADA. • Leon Bazar was recently appointed to the MHMR Board. • The CFPWD is seeking to develop a strong Engineering Sub-Committee to work with the Engineering Department. C. Education Subcommittee— No Report D. Disparity Subcommittee— No Report 7. HUMAN RELATIONS ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT A. Department Monthly Performance Report Review Leon Bazar provided the Commissioners with copies of the March 2009 Monthly Performance Report. (A ropy of the report is attached to the bad of the minutes.) Mr. Bazar stated the department closed a total of eleven EEOC cases and received a total of twenty-eight intakes. B. HB 400 Update Mr. Bazar stated the first session of the 815t Legislature on local consent items met on Tuesday, March 31st. House Bill 400 was the first bill on the floor and went through with 146 to 0 votes. The bill will now go to the Senate Committee. Mr. Bazar will keep the Commission updated. 8.
