CALL TO ORDER RECEIVED Chairperson Ramiro Gamboa called the meeting to order at 5:03 p.m. JUL 2 3 2009 A. B. REQUESTS FOR EXCUSED ABSENCES Chairperson Mr. Gamboa stated there was one request for excused absence for the MOTION June 4, 2009 meeting. Motion to excuse Robert Adler for the June 4, 2009 meeting made by Pastor Derrick Reaves and seconded by Patricia Mattocks. Motion passed. 2. APPROVAL OF REGULAR MEETING MINUTES OF 05107109 Mr. Gamboa called for approval of the May 7, 2009 meeting minutes. Motion to approve the MOTION May 7, 2009 meeting minutes made by Patricia Mattocks and seconded by Pastor Derrick Reaves. Motion passed. [Dr. Chon-Kyun Kim requested an excused absence for the May 7, 2009 meeting.] Motion to excuse Dr. Chon-Kyun Kim for the May 7, 2009 meeting made by Pastor Derrick MOTION Reaves and seconded by Edna Arredondo. Motion passed. 3. PUBLIC COMMENTS (LIMITED TO 3 MINUTES) Mr. Gamboa asked if there were any Public Comments. There were none. [Deborah Brown arrived at 5:05 p.m.] 4. PRESENTATIONS A. Community Awareness of Disparities in Birth Outcomes— Patricia Mattocks Patricia Mattocks conducted a presentation entitled Premature Birth and its Impact on Business Health Care Costs. (A copy of the PowerPoint presentation Is attached to the bad of the mums.) Ms. Mattocks reviewed economic costs to businesses, risks factors for premature births and various statistics gathered from March of Dimes presentations and from the Texas Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS). [Robert Bonner arrived at 5:30 p.m.] SCANNED Page 1 of 2 • After various uiries and discussions, the Comm Toners agreed to establish a MOTION Health DisparTrSubcommittee. Motion to establish ealth Disparity Subcommittee made by Robert Garza and seconded by Pastor Derrick Reaves. 5. CHAIRPERSON'S REPORT A. Errol Summerlin Proclamation Mr. Gamboa spoke briefly regarding Mr. Summerlin's years of service to the community and the proclamation presented to him at the May 26, 2009 Council Meeting. B. Nominations for Vacancies Submitted to City Council Mr. Gamboa stated the following nominations were submitted to City Council and will be considered at the June 23, 2009 Council Meeting: Re-Appointments Robert Adler, Edna Arredondo, Lucy Reta, Robert Bonner 0,0" Jacob Sendejar(Youth) Appointments Tony Davis, Eric Houlguin, Dalia Brem, Martha Howard (y•ith) 6. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS A. Housing Subcommittee— No Report B. Committee For Persons with Disabilities — Recap of 06/03/09 Meeting Highlights Abel Alonzo was absent. Therefore, no report was given. C. Education Subcommittee— No Report D. Disparity Subcommittee— No Report 7. HUMAN RELATIONS ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT A. Department Monthly Performance Report Review Wanese Butler provided a brief recap of the Committee For Persons With Disabilities 06/03109 meeting. Ms. Butler stated Judy Telge, Executive Director of the Coastal Bend Center for Independent Living, conducted an oral presentation regarding the Special Needs Support Team. Ms. Butler also provided the Commissioners with copies of the May 2009 Monthly Performance Report and briefly highlighted EEOC, Fair Housing and ADA Accessibility cases and grievances. A copy of the reports attached to the back of the minutes.)Ms. Butler stated Leon Bazar was attending a mandatory EEOC Policy Conference in Baltimore, MD and would return to office on Monday, June 8, 2009. 8.
