REQUESTS FOR EXCUSED ABSENCES MOTION Motion to excuse Edna Arredondo, Robert Garza and Patricia Mattocks for the October 1, 2009 meeting made by Robert Adler and seconded by Pastor Derrick Reaves. Motion passed. MOTION Motion to excuse Dr. Chon-Kyun Kim for the September 3, 2009 meeting made by Margie Myers and seconded by Robert Adler. Motion passed. 2. APPROVAL OF REGULAR MEETING MINUTES OF 09/03/09 MOTION Motion to approve the September 3, 2009 meeting minutes made by Pastor Derrick Reaves and seconded by Robert Adler. Motion passed. 3. PUBLIC COMMENTS (LIMITED TO 3 MINUTES) Mr. Gamboa asked if there were any Public Comments. There were none. 4. PRESENTATIONS — NONE Mr. Eddie Ortega is the new City of Corpus Christi Neighborhood Services Department Director. Mr. Ortega introduced himself and asked if anyone has any questions or concerns to contact him at 826-3234. 5. CHAIRPERSON'S REPORT A. Veteran's Memorial Summary Chairperson Ramiro Gamboa stated after talking to the City Manager, City Council and other people in the community concerning the Veteran's plaque which was at the Coliseum, a dedication ceremony was held in honor of the Veterans of WWII. The plaque was refurbished and is displayed in the atrium of City Hall. [Mr. Alonzo had to attend another meeting, therefore, the Chairperson skipped to Item #6.B.] SCANNED Page 1 of 3 6. SUBCOMMITTEE =PORTS B. Committee for Persons With Disabilities 1. No Meeting Mr. Alonzo stated the next CFPWD meeting will be held on October 7th, 2. Disability Employment Awareness Month Activities/Events Mr. Alonzo reported on the following upcoming events: • CFPWD Retreat— October 24th, 8:00 a.m. — 1:00 p.m., Central Library • Walk 'n Roll Celebration 2K Walk — October 17th, 8:00 a.m., People's Street T-Head • National Disability Employment Awareness Month Employer Symposium — October 26th, 1:00 p.m., Holiday Inn Emerald Beach For more information on any of the events, contact the Human Relations Department. A. Housing Subcommittee — HUD Case Review Margie Myers reporting on the following two cases: • Daphne, Alabama — HUD filed a discrimination suit against a mobile home park for discrimination against a family with children. Settlement: $134,000. • Puerto Rico Condo Association — Denied accessible parking space to a tenant. Settlement: $25,000, $10,000 to the government and condominium officers, managers and employees must attend Fair Housing training. C. Education Subcommittee— No Report D. Disparity Subcommittee— No Report E. Health Disparity Subcommittee— No Report 7. HUMAN RELATIONS ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT A. Department Monthly Performance Report Review Leon Bazar provided the Committee members with copies of the September 2009 Monthly Performance Report. (A copy of the report is attached to the back of the minutes.) Highlights included: • Completed EEOC contract at 102% of target— perfected charges completed at 100% • HUD Fair Housing closures at 66.6% within 100 days to-date — oldest aged case closed in September • ADA Technical Assistance — creative ADA parking solution for Bayfest; established coordination effort with Texas Lottery Commission for ADA site compliance • Public Accommodation — reached resolution of citizen with visual impairment and use of RTA bus services exclusion • Outreach — Annual ADA/Non-Discrimination Update to council; participated in Special Needs Evacuation Exercise B. EEOC Area Case Summaries Leon Bazar briefed and provided the Committee members with copies of the following EEOC area case summaries: (Copies of the summaries are attached to the back of the minutes.) • Corpus Christi, Texas - Brand Scaffold Builders pays $175,000 for Sexual Harassment and Retaliation • Alice, Texas - Coil Tubing Services Settles Race and National Origin Discrimination Lawsuit with EEOC • Corpus Christi, Texas - Sears Sued by EEOC for Age Discrimination Page 2 of 3 • Winston-Sale , North Carolina - Burger King to pad "5,000 for Teen Harassment Mr. Bazar annu iced the 70th Anniversary Corpus Chi isti Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Business 2 Business (B2B) Expo (8:00 a.m.) and Annual Gala & Awards Ceremony (7:00 p.m.) on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at the American Bank Center.
