DISCUSSION ITEMS:
• Status Report on Memorial Coliseum: Mr. David Brown, Chairman, addressed the Landmark
• Commission. Mr. Brown stated on last Thursday, a week ago, he received correspondence from Carol
Wood, who assisted in writing the application for the Memorial Coliseum to be placed on the National
Registry of Historic Places. Mr. Brown continued that Ms. Wood wanted to know what role the Landmark
• Commission would have in supporting the nomination. Mr. Brown continued that his response to Ms.
•
• Wood's question was that he did not have an answer, since it was unclear to him what the commission's
role should be or what the role of a CLG was. Mr. Brown went on to say that Ms. Wood provided him a
copy of the application for both the Memorial Coliseum and the Sherman Building. Mr. Brown stated he
informed Ms. Wood that in speaking on behalf of the commission, he did not feel that at this time, the
• commission was in position to make a decision on the nomination since no information had been provided
for the item to be placed on commission's agenda as an action item. Mr. Brown continued that in order
for the commission to make an informed decision, they would need adequate time to review the
document and discuss the merit of such nomination. Mr. Brown continued that the coliseum was a hot
political issue and he wanted to ensure the commission made the appropriate decision after review and
consideration of the nomination. Mr. Brown went on to say that after he spoke with Ms. Wood, he also
received a telephone call from the owner of the Sherman Building;which is located at Peoples and North
Chaparral Streets, Mr. Brown continued that the commission has been requested to respond to both
nominations. Before the floor was opened for further discussion, Mr. Brown requested staff to explain the
role of the Landmark Commission as the CLG.
Mr. Dimas explained that the Landmark Commission was the CLG for the city and the Nueces
County Historical Commission was the CLG for the county. The role of the CLG provides opportunities for
the commission to apply for federal grants through the Texas Historical Commission for preservation projects
and it also allows the commission to comment and support historical projects. Mr. Dimas continued that
because the commission is the CLG, it has an opportunity to endorse the nomination of the Memorial
Coliseum and Sherman Building to be placed on the National Registry since the coliseum is also listed on
the Landmark Commission's site survey. The CLG status also allows the commission to represent the city's
interest in historic preservation projects.
Ms. Commons asked if the Landmark Commission would have an opportunity to hear both sides as
to whether the city should maintain the structure or demolish it. Ms. Commons continued that in order for
the commission to make an informed decision, both sides should be presented to ensure that all of facts will
be given.
A question was raised regarding whether the property owner had to approve having their property
designated and what was the timeline in the commission reviewing the nomination and Ms. Rucker
responded that the property owner has to approve having their property "HC" designated. It was
explained that any one could recommend a property to be nominated for placement on the National
Registry. Mr. Dimas explained that a two-week stay of demolition had been granted until a ruling could be
made on the group's injunction.
Mr. Brown stated he informed Ms.Wood that the commission would meet on the nomination at the
April meeting and possibly have a written response by May 1, 2010, but no later than May 14, 2010. Mr.
Brown requested staff to mail a copy of the nomination to commission members for review. Dr. Klein
referenced a letter that the city received in January from the Texas Historical Commission.
Mr. Thompson asked when the Landmark Commission's awards recognition was held and it was
answered that the 2009 recognition was held in either May or June and it was a part of the Rotary Club's
monthly meeting. Mr. Thompson encouraged commissioners to begin looking for potential projects and
honorees for this year's awards recognition. It was suggested that Mr. Zeilter be contacted to find out if it
was possible for the awards recognition to be part of the Rotary's Club meeting as it has been for the past
several years. It was continued that the awards recognition became part of the club's meeting because
of Mr.Zeitler's affiliation. After further discussion,Ms. Berven stated she would contact Mr.Zeitler.
Ms. Berven was asked to give an update on the .501C-3 group meeting with the Park and
Recreation Advisory Board. Ms. Berven stated that twelve (12) Landmark Commissioners attended the
advisory meeting and it was enough members present to show that we were serious about we have been

doing with regard to the Heritage Park expansion project. Ms. Berven continued that Mr. Thompson
provided the renderings for the meeting and the Advisory Board approved the plan unanimously. Ms.
Berven went on to say that the next meeting will be April 21,2010 and it will be decided on what steps are
next.
Mr.Thompson stated the Festival of the Arts is scheduled for April, but he was not sure of the exact
date. The Friends of Heritage Park is also revising the arts in Heritage Park with the aim to have it scheduled
for next April. Ms. Berven informed the commission that she met with Joe Shanks from the Arts Commission
and was told that the commission lost its funding after this year. The festival will open with a reception from
5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday evening and the festival will be held 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and
•
• Sunday. Ms. Berven continued that after this year's event, the group will have an idea next year of what to
do. Ms. Berven stated the group was excited about the possibilities of bringing life and excitement to the
park.
Mr. Thompson encouraged commissioners to attend the art festival and the Old Bay View
Cemetery Festival Project "The Voices of South Texas sponsored by the Nueces County Historical
Commission. Mr. Thompson continued that as part of the tour, the activities included having a festival in
the cemetery this coming weekend (Saturday, March 27,2010). The festival will feature a performance by
a re-enactment group. The festival will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:25 p.m.
