Discussion of Awards Recognition & Nominees for 2010: Mr. Craig Thompson, Chairman, stated that the awards recognition would be held again in conjunction with the Rotary Club's monthly luncheon meeting on September 16, 2010. Mr. Thompson urged commissioners to submit their nominations to the Awards Committee as soon as possible. After a brief discussion, the following names were discussed as possible honorees: • Jim Rome, Architect -Craig Thompson Mr. Rome was very instrumental in the restoration of several houses in Heritage Park as well other preservation efforts; • Murphy Givens - Craig Thompson Mr. Givens has provided significant historical preservation history through his newspaper articles;- • Rick and Sarah Paige-Craig Thompson For the renovation project of their home located at 713 Furman Avenue; SCANNED • Landmark Commission Workshop July 22,2010 Page 2 • Snapka's Restaurant - Kim Charba Snapka's restaurant is one of the last original carhop restaurants • Larry Salazar Running Turtle- Dr. Mark Robbins Mr. Running Turtle has been instrumental in trying to have a memorial built to recognize the Native American's contribution to the community to recognize their significant contribution to the local historical community. Mr. Morrison stated that commissioners should have their nominations and supporting documentation submitted by mid-August; which would give the committee an opportunity to meet and discuss the nominations and formulate a recommendation for the August meeting. The committee should meet before the Landmark Commission's meeting because the commission has to approve the honorees. After further discussion, it was decided the deadline for submittal of nominees would be Thursday, August 12, 2010. The information would be submitted to Ms. Laura Commons. Mr. Morrison continued that normally when a recommendation was submitted, background materials should also be submitted and based on the information submitted will determine which project will be recommended. Overview of Landmark Commission Mr. Thompson stated the information regarding the commission could be found on the City of Corpus Christi's website at the following link: cclandmarks.org. The website also contains the City's Mission Statement. Unified Development Code: Mr. Andrew Dimas, Staff Liaison, stated that the timeline for approval of the document has been delayed and placed on hold. Currently, staff is working on passing ordinance amendments for "signage" and "trash dumpsters." A moratorium has been issued for the dumpster/screening. Mr. Dimas continued that the only subcommittee still working as part of the UDC is Base Zoning. Mr. Thompson asked if the "HC" section would be tied in with any other section and Mr. Dimas answered that the "HC" overlay district would be tied to the base zoning, but the other facets would be as the commission outlined. Mr. Thompson asked if some of the other items could be placed in the current ordinance if the UDC does not move forward and Mr. Dimas answered there were several articles have been completed and forwarded to city legal staff for review; but their review has been placed on hold. Staff initially thought the entire document could be passed instead of being piece meal, but everything has changed. Preservation Involvement: • Landmark Commission Website Current website information is over 15 years old and it needs to be updated. Several structures should be added to it, i.e. Sherman Building, the Glen Peterson's structures. Preservation Involvement (cont.) " Landmark Commission Workshop July 22,2010 Page 3 • Historical Mapping of City of Corpus Christi Commission has discussed finding a way to get the historical survey data in the binders placed on some type of GIS mapping system. Try to see if the project can be handled through the City's GIS section to begin the process of placing the information on the website; • Historical Plaque Program Provide more education on the program to promote more community involvement. Goals for 2011 : • Establishing a "Neighborhood Initiative Program' • Updating current website; • Creating an "endangered buildings" listing; • Apply for THC Grant to get the survey on the GIS system; • Identifying historical districts; • Establish an educational program partnering with Corpus Christi Independent School District; • Develop a mile stone marker identifying the city limits at various times in the city. Markers would include the size and shape of the city; • Coordinate with Nueces County to see if there was a listing showing such markers that could be incorporated in a map; • Follow up on proposal to submit articles to the Corpus Christi Sunday Home Section highlighting various historical homes and structures on a quarterly basis. Compile a list for six months with contact names and information; • Follow up on City's progress in finding an organization to renovate the Steamboat House; and • Establish a top "10" of the most at risk structures before they are slated for demolition.
