Dr. Robbins continued that if, at any time in the future, someone read the minutes of that meeting, he wanted to clarify that even though the topic of desegregation was discussed • at different times by Dr. Dana Williams, the NAACP and Dr. Hector P. Garcia, those individuals did not attend a joint meeting at the coliseum in a town hall setting. Dr. Robbins continued he wanted to make sure the minutes contained accurate information, and even though the minutes were previously approved, he is requesting that the minutes be amended to include the following: "Via written re9uest,since he was unable to attend this meeting,Dr.Robbins re9uestecl that it be reflected that while he stated during the April meeting that the Memorial Coliseum was a central place in which the community discussed and worked through issues of local and national significance, he did not state that there was a single moment in which Dr.Dana Williams, the NAACP and Dr.hector P.Garcia met together in the Coliseum in a town hall meeting. The NAACP and Dana Williams both used the coliseum as a forum to discuss the issue of • desegregation at various (important) times, but to Dr. Robbins' knowledge, there wasn't one single meeting at • •• which all of these individuals/groups were present together.Williams was at the Coliseum in August of 1972 when he made comments regarding his position of desegregation as part of a back and forth with Garcia over the issue, while Garcia hadjust been arrested and released from holding a sit-in at the board of Education building(see • SCANNED Landmark Commission Meeting August 26,2010 Page 2 Corpus Christi Caller Times 8/1 5/721 17r.hector Garcia was an important part of this local discourse, but he was unaware of any time in which he was physically in the coliseum to discuss desegregation." Approve Awards Committee's Recommendation for 2010 Recipients: Ms. Laura Commons, Chairman of the 2010 Awards Committee, addressed the commission. Ms. Commons stated the Awards Committee received two nominees for this year's recognition: Dr. Robbins submitted the name of Larry Running Turtle Salazar and Ms. Kesler submitted the name of Murphy Givens. Ms. Commons continued that Mr. Salazar was nominated for his ongoing efforts in preserving the Native American's contribution to the local community and working in conjunction with others in raising the necessary funds to build a bronze sculpted monument to be placed at the Indian burial ground site. The burial ground is located in the Sutter Park area located off Ennis Joslin Road. Ms. Commons continued that Murphy Givens was nominated based on his contribution to the local community and surrounding areas through his column with the Corpus Christi Caller Times. Mr. Givens has written numerous articles on local Corpus Christi history, historical preservation issues, sites, buildings, places, people and surrounding communities, but mostly on local history. Ms. Commons continued that Mr. Givens' being a recipient was contingent upon receiving additional information. Ms. Kesler asked for clarification as to what additional information was needed since Mr.Givens' column spoke for itself through the many articles published in the Caller Times. After some discussion, Ms. Eisenhauer stated she would contact Jim Maloney to get additional information on Mr. Givens and Ms. Kesler stated she would submit • • additional information. Ms. Eisenhauer asked if an established criterion was used in selecting the two honorees and Ms. Commons responded that the committee used the information submitted for both recipients and also those were the only two for consideration. The nominators were requested to provide pictures along with their written documentation supporting their nominees. Ms. Berven asked if there were any nominations for structures and Ms. Commons answered no. Ms. Commons asked who was responsible for preparing the certificates and contacting the recipients. Ms. Berven answered she would contact Art Zeitler to find out. Mr.Thompson stated in the past, the certificates were prepared by Herb Morrison. A question was asked if there was money to pay for the honorees' lunch • at the ceremony and Ms. Berven answered that at last year's luncheon, the Rotary Club paid for the recipients, but she would verify this information with Mr.Zeitler to see whether the Club was doing the same for this year.
