Mr. Brown continued he was proud of the work the commission had done in supporting the Heritage Park Vision Plan and he felt that a lot of work was accomplished. Mr. Brown went on to say he hoped the commission would be getting new members that were willing to work in getting things done. Mr. Brown commented that he felt the commission would be really blessed to have Mr. John Olson as a potential member to fill the vacancy of the architect competency. Mr. Brown continued that Mr. Olson has been a long-time resident of the city and has a great wealth of knowledge regarding architectural history. Mr. Brown went on to say that Mr. Olson was semi-retired and would be able to help and contribute a lot to the commission. After all comments and discussion concluded, the following action was taken: IT WAS MOVED BY MS. RUCKER AND SECONDED BY DR. KLEIN THAT THE LANDMARK COMMISSION FORWARD TO CITY SECRETARY THE RECOMMENDATION OF JOHN OLSON FOR APPOINTMENT TO THE COMMISSION TO FILL THE COMPETENCY OF ARCHITECT. MOTION PASSED. Mr. Thompson stated that since the November and December meetings fell during the holidays, the commission will not meet until January 2011. Mr.Thompson continued that within the next month, before the regular meeting in January, he would like to begin working on some of the goals that were discussed at the July workshop. Mr. Thompson continued that during 2009, Ms. Tinker and Ms. Eisenhauer started working on the green site survey binders to • ensure that all of the data was in place. Mr. Thompson continued he was unsure how much work was accomplished, but it was one of the commission's goals that the information contained in the binders be placed on the City's website. For informational purposes, Mr. Thompson stated he received a telephone call from Kim Charba stating she was interested in working on the possible renovation of the Steamboat House. Mr.Thompson continued he was not sure what progress had been on the house other than it being relocated across the street from Heritage Park. Mr.Thompson stated he had not spoken with anyone from City Park and Recreation staff to get an update on the project. Park and Recreation has a new director and, at this point, he was unsure as to what information he could provide. Mr. Brown commented that the Steamboat House has as much character as any one of the other houses currently in Heritage Park and it would be worth the effort to pursue its restoration. Mr. Brown continued that the house was built around 1890 by Captain W.T. Ropes, brother to Colonel E. Ropes. Mr. Brown continued that before the house was relocated to the Heritage Park area, photos were taken of the structure at its previous location on Carancahua Street and were made into a power point presentation. Mr. Brown stated he would make available a copy of the power point presentation for both the Heritage Park Vision Plan and the Steamboat House. Ms. Rucker stated she also has pictures of the house being moved from Carancahua Street to its current location. Ms. Charba commented that she was very interested in working on this project, but she wanted to ensure adequate information was available that she could pursue. After further discussion, no action was taken. Dr. Klein informed commissioners that funding from the City for the Texas Jazz Festival had decreased by$30,000.00. Dr. Klein continued that in spite of the funding decrease, this year's festival was great and well attended. The performers did an excellent job in keeping the music going. Dr. Klein commented that the music was diverse enough to satisfy all attendees. Landmark Commission Meeting October 28,2010 • Page 3 • • • Ms. Howden asked what was the next step in getting the Heritage Park Vision plan moved forward to City Council and Mr. Brown suggested that the plan be presented to the Planning Commission first before presenting it to council. Mr. Thompson asked Ms. Howden if there were any upcoming events that she could share with the commission. Ms. Howden stated earlier in the year on March 27, 2010, the Nueces County Historical Commission held the first cemetery walk and it was a blast. Ms. Howden continued that normally this type of activity was very popular doing the month of October because the cemetery walks were focused around Halloween. Ms. Howden continued the commission was planning an activity on November 6 in honor of veterans. The Old Bay View Cemetery was the military cemetery and it was the first one in the state of Texas. Activities will include an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. and shooting of the cannon at 12 noon. Ms. Howden continued there will be about twenty (20) re-enactments and Mr. Julian Garza will return with his chuck wagon on site. After further discussion, no action was taken. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 5 p.m. 9 .VrjuuuttAvo) Lind' Williams Andrew Dimas, City Planner Rec.rding Secretary _r Staff Liaison to Landmark Commission • • {H:PLN-DIR\LINDA\WORD\LANDMARK\MINUTES\OCT2B10.MINS)
