ACTION ITEM: Approve May 26, 2011 Minutes: The May 26, 2011 minutes were approved as distributed. Motion to approve the minutes was made by Mr. Morrison and seconded by Dr. Robbins. DISCUSSION ITEMS: Awards Committee Update: Dr. Klein, Vice Chairman, addressed the commission. Dr. Klein stated that at the May meeting, the Chairman brought forward several names and projects to be considered as honorees for the 2011 awards recognition. The recommendations were: • Ms. Carol Wood, as an individual, for her effort and hard work in compiling the necessary information for the application for the National Registry of Historic Places nomination on behalf of the Memorial Coliseum; • Sherman Building — the Sherman Building has known by several names — the Jones Building, and most commonly known now as the Nueces Building. The building is one of the oldest buildings in the city and Mr. Bill Hoover did an excellent job in restoring the building and was able to retain a lot of the building's original character by leaving interior intact ; • Blucher House— It was nominated because of its architectural and historical significance and its complete restoration; and • Special award recognition of Bunny Tinker, former Landmark Commissioner, for her continued and dedicated work in historical preservation. SCANNED • • Landmark Commission Meeting July 28,2011 Page 2 —) After Dr. Klein's comments, he asked if there other nominations for the commission to consider and no other nominations were submitted. Mr. Morrison stated it would be helpful if the nominators would provide a presentation packet for each nomination. The packet should include a brief written presentation, along with pictures if they are available, to support their nominations. Mr. Morrison continued it would be helpful to have a packet of information for the presenter to use at the luncheon. Mr. Morrison stated the presentations did not have to be lengthy since there will not be a lot of time to make the presentations, but the packet should provide enough information to support why the individuals and/or projects were nominated. For the structures, the packet should include a historical narrative of its historical or architectural significance complete with photographs showing before and after the restoration. A question was asked regarding the award certificates and Mr. Morrison stated he had the templates that were used in prior years and he was willing to make the certificates and the seals placed on the certificates were obtained from the City Secretary's office. After further discussion, Dr. Klein asked commissioners if they wanted to take action on the recommended nominations or wait until the August meeting. Dr. Klein stated his only concern he had in delaying approval would be if there was no quorum for the August meeting. Dr. Robbins stated that since both buildings were nominated for the National Registry, there should be no problem in obtaining the information for the presentation packet. The awards committee should be able to compile the information needed and create a great presentation for the awards luncheon. After all comments had been received, the following action was taken: IT WAS MOVED BY MS. EISENHAUER AND SECONDED BY MS. HOWDEN THAT THE THE LANDMARK COMMISSON APPROVE AND ACCEPT THE AWARDS COMMITTEE'S RECOMMENDATION THAT CAROL WOOD, THE SHERMAN BUILDING AND THE BLUCHER HOUSE AS HONOREES FOR THE LANDMARK COMMISSION 2011 AWARDS ) RECOGNITION. MOTION PASSED. Recommendation to Fill the Vacancy of Mary Lou Berven, Historian: Dr. Klein stated that Ms. Berven submitted her letter of resignation and the vacancy needed to be filled. Ms. Berven filled the competency of a historian. Dr. Klein continued that staff included applications in the packet for commissioners to review so that a recommendation could be made. One option presented was that Ms. Howden be re-aligned to fill the competency of historian since she was a retired history teach and from the applications received, submit a recommendation for a regular member to be appointed. Ms. Eisenhauer stated she knew two history teachers from the Calallen School District that would also be excellent choices to fill the competency of historian. Ms. Eisenhauer continued she was a little concerned about whether they would be able to get to the meetings since their school day ended after 4 p.m. After further discussion, no action was taken. The item will be rescheduled for action at the August meeting. Dr. Robbins invited commissioners to attend a free public lecture sponsored by the Del Mar College Cultural Programs Committee. The lecture is scheduled for August 12, 2011 at 12 noon in Room 433 of the White Library on the east campus. Dr. Alan Lessoff, Ph.D. is the guest lecturer speaking on "Corpus Christi and the New Urban Southwest." Dr. Lessoff completed a book manuscript entitled "Corpus Christi: A City of the South Texas Coast." The book is based on research he began while on faculty at Texas A& M University-Corpus Christi from 1992 to 2000. Ms. Eisenhauer informed commissioners that she emailed Craig Thompson information regarding several historical markers that have been removed from the bluff balustrade area and the plaque in front of the Confederate fountain. Ms. Eisenhauer requested staff to follow up to see if the plaques and markers were possibly removed to be cleaned or if they had been stolen. If it's found that the City did not remove them, the police should be contacted so that an official report could be made. Mr. Vardeman stated that bluff area was maintained by the Parks and Recreation Department and he would contact the director to see if they removed the plaques. Ms. Eisenhauer stated that the County Historical Landmark Commission Meeting July 28,2011 Page 3 Commission had been charged to record all of the Texas Historical Markers in the County/City and in driving through the area was how she found out that they were missing. Ms. Eisenhauer extended an invitation to commissioners to attend a video showing on "The Battle of Corpus Christi" that was completed by D. Delaney. The video will be shown on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at the River Hills Baptist Church off of FM 624. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:10 p.m. Linda Williams Wesley H.
