Discussion Items Nueces County Historical Commission Work: Dr. Klein stated the Nueces County Historical Commission is currently looking for additional members. One of their major goals is to continue to place historical markers on various historic sites. Dr. Klein encouraged commissioners' participation in helping to find potential sites for the marker program. Voices of South Texas Cemetery Walk(Scheduled for November 8, 2014): Dr. Klein stated Karen Howden, a member of the Landmark Commission, and also is a member of the Nueces County Historical Commission, has organized this activity for the past several years. Volunteers are needed to participate in the event representing the voices of people that are buried in the Old Bayview Cemetery. Dr. Klein stated the Old Bayview Cemetery is "HC" designated and the County Historical Commission is experiencing ongoing problems with vandalism and destruction of the tombstones; which mostly occur during the time events are held at the Concrete Street Theater. Bound Volumes of the Historical Properties: Dr. Klein stated that over the past few months, several commissioners independently reviewed some of the bound binders which total thirty in all. The property addresses were googled to verify if they still existed. Dr. Klein continued that because the binders have not been updated in approximately twenty years, most likely a lot of the structures are demolished or in such disrepair that it would be too costly to repair them. Dr. Klein stated approximately seven or eight binders were reviewed. Staff was requested to bring a bound volume to the next meeting. Leadership of the Landmark Commission: Dr. Klein stated that a nominating committee should be established to bring back nominations for the Chairman and Vice Chairman at the next meeting. Dr. Klein continued he is ineligible to continue to serve because he has served the maximum terms allowed. Dr. Klein stated that normally the November and December meetings were cancelled because of the holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas, but the commission should meet before the January meeting. After further discussion, Staff was requested to see if the Council Chambers were available for November 20, 2014, and if so,the commission meeting date will be moved to that date. Staff will let commissioners know if a meeting will be scheduled. VI. Identify Items for Next Meeting Agenda • Election of Officers—Chairman and Vice Chairman; • Purpose of the bound green binders — why they are being updated and how will the information will be used; and • Reviewing new structures for possible consideration to add to the potential listing.
