HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Leadership Committee For Senior Services - 01/12/2010 ‘F.r %pm" RECEIVED Leadership Committee for Senior Services Meeting Minutes FEE 1 0 ?i; Lindale Senior Center Tuesday, January 12, 2010 CITY SECRETARY'S OFFICE ► A quorum of members was present and the meeting was called to order at 2:10 p.m. by Adelfa Martinez, LCSS Vice-Chairperson. *Roll Call Roll call was conducted by Adelfa Martinez. Sherri Darveaux, Vicki Garza, Dotson Lewis and Arnold Villarreal were absent. Cecilia Huerta stated she received an email from Mr. Villarreal who stated he would not be able to attend due to an illness. ▪Consider Committee Member Attendance Issues Elsa Munoz reported that the City Secretary's Office has submitted a letter of termination to Marylin Upmanyu based on her absences. She also stated that today will be Vicki Garza's fourth absence for this term year. SCS Staff will notify the City Secretary's Office of her absences. ►Approval of Minutes: Committee members reviewed the December 2009 meeting minutes. Cecilia Huerta stated on page one of the minutes under the SCS Division Program Report section the word "be" is missing from the last sentence. Ms. Huerta motioned to approve the minutes with the correction mentioned. Patricia Byrd and Miltan Martiz seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved. 0-Unfinished Buisness: Ms. Munoz reported that the actual report for the 2009 Holiday Dinner had not been completed but would like to mention that the American Bank Center did not charge the $4,000.00 in rent for this event. We were given a discounted rate which we were charge only for the use of the building. Ms. Huerta announced her appreciation to Lindsey Edwards and Physicians Health Choice for donation the Wii for the winners of the Christmas tree decorating contest. Mary Ann Mondragon, Lindale Senior Center Supervisor, mentioned that during her Site Council meeting it was mentioned that next year maybe the trees should be labeled after the judging so everyone could know what center decorated which tree. Ms. Huerta suggested possibly putting like a winning ornament or ribbon to distinguish the winning tree from all the other trees. Monica Escamilla, Oveal Williams Senior Center Supervisor, stated that she liked that the bingo was done at different times, it was not just one continuous session. She also announced that she had many seniors compliment the D.J. from the Holiday Dinner. They liked how it was a verity of music not just the same type of music. Lindsey Edwards mentioned that maybe next year the committee could start earlier in looking for donations to cut down the expenses. She stated that there are many people and businesses who want to donate items it's just a matter of asking. Public Comment: None ►LCSS Members Rules and Responsibilities: Cecilia Huerta— Participate in the committee and make the community aware of the services that are provided for seniors. SCANNED Lindsey Edwards— Be cr-ivet raise money for the committee`help make the seniors feel wanted, happy and healthy. Adelfa Martinez—Get all seniors to engage in SI activities because all seniors need to be more active. Also make sure that all senior centers make each member feel welcome. Miltan Martiz— Participate more to her ability in this committee. Serve as an advocate to the seniors. Urges everyone in the committee to participate at the centers to get a better understanding of the seniors and how the centers operate. Donna Rodriguez—Attend the meetings and actively participate. Patricia Byrd — Make more seniors aware of the centers and what they have to offer. Many seniors have lost a spouse and they can attend a center to form new friendships with other seniors in their same situation. Clarissa Lopez— Giving a hundred percent and attend the meetings. Learn and advise the seniors of the different activities within the community. Take care of our seniors. ►SCS on the Move PowerPoint Presentation: None ►Vaules and Visioning: Allow time for the next two meetings to come up with what each member would like to see the senior centers accomplish or look like in the future. Ms. Huerta mentioned there is a website to document every minute of the volunteer hours to have it documented and be able to take to the City Council to help save the senior centers during this city budget cuts. ►Items to be placed on the next agenda: Election of Slate of Officers for the February 2010 meeting. ►Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 4:11p.m. 2
