► A quorum of members were present and the meeting was called to order at 3:36 p.m. by Uofson Lewis,
LCSS Chairperson.
I.Roll Call
Roll call was conducted by Patricia Byrd. Lindsey Edwards, Cecilia Huerta, Clarissa Lopez, Adelfa
Martinez and Arnold Villarreal were absent. Elsa Munoz advised the committee that Caroline Szepessy
sent her letter of resignation of this committee. Patricia Byrd, Gloria Gooding, Hubert Hall, Ida Hobbs,
Dotson Lewis, Hope Lopez, Donna Rodriguez and Billy Sayles were all present.
▪Approval of Minutes
Committee members reviewed the June 2010 meeting minutes. Pat Byrd stated that under the State of the
Senior Center Report the Ethel Eyerly Site Council representatives name is Ray Hicklin not Hickler. Ms.
Garza made a motion to approve the minutes as amended (changing Hickler to Hicklin). Ms. Byrd
seconded the motion and the minutes were unanimously approved as amended. Ms. Garza asked that in
the minutes the present members be reflected under the Roll Call section as well as the absent members.

▪Subcommittee Reports:
Funding and Resource/Special Events Subcommittee:
Ms. Munoz reported that September is National Senior Center Month and one of the goals is to raise
awareness on how important Senior Centers are to the community. Ms. Munoz stated that Senior
Community Services will be hosting different events throughout the month of September to celebrate
National Senior Center Month. There will be a Chair Volleyball Invitational on Friday, September 24, 2010
at the Ben Garza Gym beginning at 1:00 p.m. Senior Center Members vs. Senior Community Services
Staff. Gloria Gooding will be the emcee for this event and Hope Lopez will be playing on the Lindale
Senior Center Team. Ms. Munoz announced that referees will be needed and all LCSS Members are
invited to attend. Saturday, September 25, 2010 Senior Community Services in partnership with Reliant
Energy will be hosting a Community Fair at the Oveal Williams Senior Center from 12:30 p.m.to 4:00 p.m.
There will be popcorn, pickles, pretzels, snow cups, moon jump and lots of fun for the entire family. Ms.
Munoz asked the committee if they are interested in helping serve for this event to let Rosario Medina,
Administrative Assistant, know and she will coordinate a list of all interested LCSS members. Connie
Reschman, Zavala Senior Center Supervisor, has been working with our Public Information Office to
interview some of the seniors on "What Senior Center Means to Me". They will collate all the interviews
and place it on a DVD. Ms. Munoz announced that she participated in a conference call with the National
Institution for Senior Centers (NISC)about the topic of"What Senior Center Means to Me"when Ms.
Munoz mentioned what Senior Community Services was doing they even talked about the possibility of
have the DVD shown on a national level. Ms. Munoz reported that all senior centers will be hosting an
"Open House"at each of their sites.
Ms. Munoz announced that the Holiday Dinner will be on Thursday, December 16, 2010 at the American
Bank Center. All Senior Community Services sites will be closed on that day. Last year there was a
Christmas Tree Decorating Contest and the winner of this contest won a Wii Console. Ms. Munoz reported
that the event cost will be $10,000.00 to have this year. The committee has finalized the Holiday Dinner
Sponsor Packet in hopes to help fund this event. Monica Escamilla, Oveal Williams Senior Center
Supervisor, and Ninth Chavera, Northwest Senior Center Supervisor, have been working on a Gourmet
Popcorn Fundraiser to help raise funds for the Holiday Dinner as well.
Ms. Gooding reported that she is currently working on the possibility of having a Harvest Moon
Celebration. Ms. Gooding explained that the Harvest Moon Celebration many years ago was to celebrate
ones own harvest. This Harvest Moon Celebration will be to celebrate ones life at a senior center. Ms.
Gooding mentioned that in New York they have this celebration and they have people doing different

genres of dance such as swing,tango and many more. Ms. Gooding has been in contact with Fonzi's
Dance Studio and Razzle Dazzle. The theme for this event would be a 1940's theme and will also be a
black tie event. Tentative date would be Saturday, November 13, 2010 possibly at the Corpus Christi
Country Club or at a Senior Center. There will be a charge for the event but prices have not been
discussed at this time.
Ms. Munoz asked all Senior Center Supervisors to leave for a few minutes so she could discuss an item
with the committee. Ms. Munoz reported that on October 17— 19, 2010 Senior Community Services will be
hosting the 2010 Senior Center Director's Summit at the Omni Marina. On Monday, October 18, 2010 the
conference attendees will be scheduled to take a tour of one of our senior centers. Then they will be
served dinner at the senior center as well. Ms. Munoz explained that she wants to recognize all the Senior
Center Supervisors at this dinner for all of the hard work they do on an everyday basis. She is asking the
committee for they help in funding the food for this dinner. Ms. Munoz is asking the committee to approve
$500.00 to be taken from the PALS account to help offset the expense of this dinner. She also explained
that Ms. Lopez will be sending out a letter to all Site Council Presidents asking them for money to help
fund the dinner as well. Mr. Hall motioned to approve that$500.00 be taken from PALS to help fund this
dinner. Ms. Garza seconded the motion and was unanimously approved.
Program Operations Subcommittee:
Dotson Lewis reported that the Site Council By-Laws have been approved and will be coordinating a
summit with all Site Councils to introduce these new By-Laws. The Site Council Summit will take place on
Monday, October 25, 2010 at the Greenwood Senior Center from 1:30 p.m. —3:30 p.m.
Patricia Byrd gave her update on the Lindale Senior Center Site Council Audit. Ms. Byrd advised that she
has been working with treasurer of the Lindale Site Council and everything looked good other then the fact
that they were paying for too many things in cash. Ms. Byrd explained to them that it was better to write
checks for items then with cash because you have a paper trail for all your transactions. Ms. Byrd also
mentioned that the treasurer for the Ethel Eyerly Site Council quit and she is currently in the process of
retrieving all the Site Council items for that person and will be training the new treasurer on their
accounting procedures. She will also be working with Deborah Henry, Greenwood Senior Center
Supervisor, to be able to meet with the treasurer of the Greenwood Site Council on their accounting
procedures.
Mr. Lewis asked Lisa Oliver for an update on Leeza's Place. Ms. Oliver reported that Leeza's Place trip in
October has been postponed due to that site is currently undergoing renovations. Lindale Senior Center
members and LCSS members will be notified once we receive more information regarding the trip to visit
Leeza's Place. Ms. Munoz mentioned that she has attended the Leeza's Place presentation and finds it as
a great compliment that they are considering adding a Leeza's Place in our area.
Ms. Oliver presented an update on the Social Service Unit which is currently being done by Tanya Lara,
Broadmoor Senior Center Supervisor. Enoch Maldonado is now the Home Delivered Meals Outreach
Worker for Senior Community Services.
Program Evaluation Subcommittee:
Ms. Donna Rodriguez reported that 269 comments cards were received and only 2 were unsatisfied.
There were some comments regarding spoiled milk.

Mrs. Rodriguez reported that she will not be able to attend the events on October 24 and 25, 2010 due to a
surgery she will be having.
►SCS Division Program Report:
Lisa Oliver reported that Senior Community Services in partnership with CCISD and the Area Agency on
Aging along with other community organizations hosted the Grandparents and Other Relatives Raising
Children Conference on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 there were over 300 people in attendance
which was a great success. She also mentioned Senior Community Services has partnered with the
Nueces County Health Department for the Flu Shot Clinics at the senior centers, which will be begin on
Monday, September 27, 2010 at the Zavala Senior Center. Ms. Oliver also stated that all Benefits
Counseling Staff attended a traning for the Center of Medicare/Medicaid last week. We were joined with
the Regional Director for the Centers of Medicare/Medicaid in which she was also participating in the
training as well as conducting two site visits at Oveal Williams Senior Center and the Garden Senior
Center to meet with senior center members and give them information regarding the new HealthCare
Reform and how it will affect Medicare/Medicaid. Ms. Oliver stated that the Regional Director was
pleasantly surprised when they conducted the site visits and made a comment that they were "model
senior centers' and that the services we provide are so comprehensive. The Regional Director explained
to the senior center members how lucky they are to have site supervisors who are certified benefits
counselors to be able to provide that type of assistance at all the senior centers. Ms. Oliver advised the
committee that October will be a busy month. On Thursday, October 21, 2010 all sites will be closed due
to Senior Community Staff In-Service from 1:00 p.m.—5:00 p.m. Lindale Senior Center and Greenwood
Senior Center will be hosting their 35th Year Anniversary Celebration. Tuesday, September 21, 2010 is the
Proclamation Reading for Senior Center Month in Council Chambers at 11:45 a.m. Ms. Oliver also
announced that the Pageant Committee are selling Raffle Tickets for Spurs Tickets (courtside),
autographed baseball from Toby Clemens along with a autographed baseball card and a signed
Basketball for$5.00 to help raise money for the Senior Pageant.
Ms. Munoz thanked Lisa Oliver and Leticia Ochoa for all their hard work and late nights during the FY11
Budget process for our grant which includes our Elderly Nutrition Program, Meals on Wheels and our
Benefits Counseling. Ms. Munoz explained that the state changed the budget worksheets and the city also
changed the way we allocate some of the funds so a new method was developed to compile this
information. All the paperwork has been turned in and we are now just waiting for signatures and we will
present the new contract at next month's meeting, will present a general overview of what the funding
looks like for this year as soon as they have been finalized by the state and the Area Agency on Aging.
Ms. Munoz advised the committee that the Title XX program just underwent a state audit, which they
audited the fiscal part, the client files,the data and all documentation we have for this program. Ms. Ochoa
mentioned that we are waiting to be audited by the Area Agency on Aging so that we could finish out the
audit on the Title XX program in which we could get the results of the audit. Ms. Ochoa stated she did ask
the auditors if there were any areas of improvement. There were some problems with a client's personal
information not being up to date. Ms. Munoz asked that everyone who knows seniors who attend the
senior centers make sure to convey how important it is that they update their personal information
whenever they change any medications, doctors, or phone numbers.
Ms. Munoz also reported that the new Director for Parks and Recreation Department, Michael Morris, has
conducted site visits at all of the senior centers except for the Ethel Eyerly Senior Center and the Nutrition
Education Service Center. Mr. Morris was welcomed to each site by their site council in a variety of ways.
