HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Leadership Committee For Senior Services - 05/05/2011 • RECEIVED Leadership Committee for Senior Services JUL 1 8 2011 Meeting Minutes Greenwood Senior Center CEP(SECREfARY'S MITE Thursday, May 5,2011 ' A quorum of members were present and the meeting was called to order at 3:43 p.m. by Vicki Garza. ▪Roll Call Roll call was conducted by Patricia Byrd. Patricia Byrd, Vicki Garza, Ida Hobbs, Cecilia Huerta, Hope Lopez, Clarissa Lopez,Adelfa Martinez, Henry Savoy, Billy Ray Sayles, Jose Villanueva and Felix Zavala were all present. Lindsey Edwards, Gloria Gooding and Dotson Lewis were all absent. ▪Attendance Issues: none 'Approval of Minutes Ms. Garza asked if there were any corrections to the April 2011 minutes. Ms. Byrd stated that there are actually 2 ping pong tables and only 1 pool table at Ethel Eyerly and the Computer Classes should be changed to Computer Interest Group. Mr. Savoy made a motion to approve the minutes as amended. Ms. Martinez seconds the motion and it was unanimously approved. 'State of the Senior Center Address: Maria Cooper, Greenwood Senior Center Site Council President, has had really good fundraising sales for the site council. Ms. Cooper advised that the site council had a turkey give away for Thanksgiving this past November, and have received numerous awards. Ms. Garza thanked Ms. Cooper for her politeness while she taught the Matter of Balance Classes at the Greenwood Senior Center. ▪New Business: Introduction of Newly Appointed LCSS Members: Ms. Garza introduced Mr. Felix Zavala who was endorsed back in March 2011. Mr. Zavala mentioned that it was his first time going to the Greenwood Senior Center. He announced that years ago he worked at the Nutrition Education Service Center with Senior Community Services Division. Review LCSS By-Laws: Ms. Munoz announced that the composition of this committee has changed in representation over the last year. Before we had representation of Senior Companion Program as well as RSVP which now changed and the by-laws do not reflect that change. Ms. Munoz advised that the Program Operations Subcommittee will be revising the by-laws to clean up in the verbiage as well as the representation of the document. Then once it is reviewed by the Program Operations Subcommittee it will be reviewed by the entire committee for approval. Ms. Munoz stated that the by-laws also need to be revised to include the portion regarding the Disciplinary Committee,which is documented in the Site Council by-laws but not in the LCSS by-laws. Ms. Martinez asked if the site councils could revise the by-laws once they are revised by the committee. Ms. Byrd mentioned that it would have to be brought before the committee and then only the Program Operations subcommittee could amend the by-laws. Ms. Munoz clarified that the by-laws that will be revised are the LCSS Committee by-laws and will only be revised by the committee itself.The by-laws Ms. Byrd was talking about are the site council by-laws which are revised by the Program Operations Subcommittee. Ms. Lisa Oliver announced the Site Council Summit would be held on May 24th at 2:OOp the location is to be announced at a later date, but would probably be at the Garden Senior Center or the Lindale Senior Center. Ms. Lopez mentioned the summit would be held after the installation of officers. 'Subcommittee Reports: Funding and Resource/Special Events Subcommittee: Ms. Huerta announced that they have several events planned for this year. There will be a raffle for the 4th of July which will be a gift basket with a BBQ pit and other donated items. There will be only 1 basket for 1 SCANNED this particular raffle which will be available for all sites. The drawing will be held on June 30th at 11 am at the Lindale Senior Center. This raffle will be held in hopes to raise money for the 2011 Holiday Dinner. Ms. Huerta announced that the Harvest Moon Ball is scheduled for September 17, 2011 at the American Bank Center in the Henry Garrett Ball Room.Tickets will be$60.00 a person. is being asked to participate in donating two $25 gift cards or one$50 gift card. Ms. Huerta reported that Older American's Month is in May and the eight senior centers will each have an activity they will host for this month. Senior Community Services will host a Senior Day Picnic on May 27, 2011 at the Ethel Eyerly Senior Center from 10:00 a.m.—2:00 p.m. There will be a charge of$3.00 for senior center members and $6.00 for guests.There will be many events at this picnic such as a wii tournament, chair volleyball tournament and all sorts of fitness activities. Ms. Huerta stated that they are working on getting sponsors for t-shirts for this event. She mentioned that this will not be a program meal so there will be flexibility in the menu for the event. Ms. Huerta mentioned that they would be participating in an event called Connecting the Community which will be held on June 7, 2011. Mr. Savoy asked what the projected expense is for the 2011 Holiday Dinner. Ms. Munoz advised that the projected expense for the 2011 Holiday Dinner is approximately$3,500.00. Program Operations Subcommittee: Ms. Hobbs reported that the site council elections are underway.There were some issues that have come up during this year's election and will need to be addressed for the site council elections in 2013. Ms. Hobbs stated that at the Broadmoor Senior Center they will have a special events committee since there were not enough people nominated for the site council. The Northwest Senior Center, Oveal Williams Senior Center and Lindale Senior Center will have a ballot election. Ms. Hobbs announced that the Caregiver Resource Center will be located out of the Lindale Senior Center which WellMed has issued a letter of intent to the City of Corpus Christi that has already been signed and a soft opening will be held in August or September. Program Evaluation Subcommittee: Ms. Martinez reported they had received 208 comment cards for April. There were 2 unsatisfied comments and 10 who wished to get a response. The Lindale Senior Center had a comment card which stated that Sonia and Nathan were doing a good job. There were also some comments from the Northwest Senior Center that stated the potatoes had too much rosemary.Also the broccoli and cauliflower were too mushy. There were no comment cards turned in from the Broadmoor Senior Center. Ms. Martinez stated that the implementation of the cancelation policy seems to be working out great. Ms. Munoz announced that Leticia is still out on medical leave. Ms. Byrd mentioned that Mr. Micheal Morris, Director of the Parks and Recreation Department was at the Ethel Eyerly Senior Center. Ms. Munoz advised that Mr. Morris has been out 2 I touring the sites in the past few days. Ms. Munoz also mentioned that we have been included to promote awareness of the "One Away" which stands for one event away from blank. This will capture real life stories of Medicare/Medicaid and how vulnerable seniors are with these policy changes. Ms. Munoz announced that she is still waiting to hear on the FY12 budget. She stated that everything has been submitted and are just waiting a response. Ms. Munoz stated that there are some substantial expenses that we are anticipating before the end of the year which would include purchasing several air conditioners that need to be fixed. Ms. Oliver advised that they are working on patching everything to keep them operational till the end of the year. Ms. Oliver mentioned that next Thursday staff would be attending a symposium at the First Methodist Church. Ms. Oliver also reported that Senior Community Services is partnering with Reliant Energy for the Beat the Heat Centers. The Lindale Senior Center, Greenwood Senior Center, Broadmoor Senior Center and Oveal Williams Senior Center will all participate in this program. There will be a tentative press conference on June 9th for this event.The Reliant Energy Foundation will create centers to get seniors to come in and stay out the heat during these hot summer months. Ms. Oliver mentioned there is a Community Education Emergency Awareness Campaign held on May 19'"at the Garden Senior Center at 6:30 p.m. Ms. Munoz announced that we have been contacted to be a part of the torch relay in June. Ms. Munoz reported that the Texas Department of Agriculture conducted a monitoring visit recently and we received results of 0 findings. She mentioned that we have not gotten all our documents but did receive word from the Area Agency on Aging of these results. Ms. Munoz thanked the Nutrition Education Service Center Staff which included Rosario Medina, Elizabeth Riley, Cynthia Carrizales,Armando Ortiz and Joel Alonzo who helped provide all needed documentation for this monitoring visit.
