HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Leadership Committee For Senior Services - 04/04/2013 Leadership Committee for Senior Services Meeting Minutes Greenwood Senior Center Thursday, April 4, 2013 ► The Meeting was called to order at 3:35 p.m. by B. Sayles, Chairperson. ►Roll Call Roll call was conducted by I. Hobbs. Members present: B. Sayles, I. Hobbs, C. Mutchler, K. Mutchler, W. Hardeman, B. Rye, E. Savoy, A. Martinez, H. Lopez, S. Beltz, J. Gomez, R. Irwin, L. Hardeman and E. Flores. Members absent: V. Garza. ►Consider Committee member Attendance Issues I. Hobbs reported that V. Garza has three absences for the year. E. Munoz advised the absences will be reported to the City Secretary's office for further guidance. ►Introduce New LCSS Members B. Sayles, Chairperson invited the new members to introduce themselves. J. Gomez, L. Hardeman, R. Irwin, S. Beltz, and E. Flores all introduced themselves and expressed their commitment to educating themselves on the issues, being eager to participate and honored to have been chosen to serve on the committee. No-Approval of Minutes Minutes from the March 7, 2013 meeting were distributed for review. A motion was made by E. Savoy and seconded by I. Hobbs to approve the minutes. The motion was unanimously approved. ►New Business Finalize LCSS Retreat Date • E. Munoz explained that due to committee vacancies the annual retreat date will need to be in either May or June. By executive order, B. Sayles, Chairperson changed the date to May 2, 2013 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at a location to be announced. A program meal will be provided forlunch. Review and Approve Revisions to the Consolidated Senior Center By-Laws • This item was tabled. Harvest Moon Ball • C. Mutchler reported the 2013 Harvest Moon Ball (HMB) Planning Committee will be meeting next week. 1 Tuesday Night Dance Follow-Up Report • L. Oliver reported I. Hobbs, E. Munoz, E. Salinas and herself met with the Tuesday Night Dance Coordinators at Lindale Senior Center who are retiring at the end of April 2013. It was determined that eight volunteers would be needed to successfully continue the Tuesday Night Dances. Eight volunteers have come forward to manage the event. R. Irwin reported that he is heading up the new coordinator group. He shared his appreciation and praise for the volunteers. No-Subcommittee Reports Program Operations • I. Hobbs reported on the Joint Ad Hoc Committee 21" Century Town Hall Meetings. The feedback and goals will be presented during the LCSS retreat in May 2013. • B. Sayles reported that the guidelines for the Site Council elections have been completed. The current site council members should be recruiting for new members. Orientations were conducted by the current site council members, staff and LCSS members. • The Special Events Committee Guidelines 2013-2015 were distributed for review. A motion was made by E. Savoy and seconded by I. Hobbs to accept the changes to the guidelines as written. The motion was unanimously approved. • I. Hobbs reported that Site Council nominations were held on April 1, 2013. Greenwood, 12 Nominations; Northwest, 9 Nominations; Garden, 9 Nominations; Lindale, 5 Nominations; Ethel Eyerly, 13 Nominations; Oveal Williams, 5 Nominations. Elections will be held at Greenwood and Ethel Eyerly. Northwest and Garden will not be required to hold elections as the nominees will be approved by acclamation. Lindale and Oveal Williams will be reclassified as Special Events Committees due to the low response from the membership and not meeting the Site Council minimum number membership criteria. Funding&Resource/Special Events • B. Rye reported the Senior Trip to the Coushatta Casino in Kinder, Louisiana scheduled for April 10—12, has only five seats open for purchase. • The April 121h date for the Age Well—Live Well event has been postponed to June 281H • The Chair Volleyball event planned for April 18th has been moved to June 7th to be coordinated with the Senior Day in the Park at the Natatorium. This is a very popular event and volunteers are needed. • Older Americans Month Proclamation for May will be held April 23rd in the City Council Chambers. • Art From the Wise Heart, sponsored by the Mayor's Council on Aging will be held on May 3rd This event will focus on senior artists. L. Oliver answered that the entry form is being finalized. The event is from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. Members are encouraged to participate and attend. • The senior trip scheduled for May has been postponed until later in the year. • The Site Council Installation Ceremony will be at Garden Senior Center, beginning at 2:00 p.m. I. Hobbs expressed a desire for the Special Events Committees to be recognized. E. Munoz indicated that some form of recognition would be included. 2 • Older American's Month is in May and this is an opportunity to build memberships at the centers, increase awareness about senior programs and recognize the contributions of older adults. • May 28th is the press conference for the Cool Corpus Christi Fan Drive in June. Fundraising efforts will begin, along with fan collections at the kickoff event to be held at the Lindale Senior Center's Tuesday Night Dance. • June 22-23rd is the 18th Annual Ms. Coastal Bend Annual Senior Pageant. Sponsorship packets are already being distributed. • Mayor's for Meals event was held on March 20th. The Mayor, Nelda Martinez, along with Wayne Lytle, Gloria Gooding, and LCSS members, Cindy Mutchler and Elena Flores,were on hand to deliver Meals on Wheels to individuals in the community. This is a national event and the seniors were very appreciative. • Senior Law Day was held March 5th and received very positive responses from not only our senior community but also the legal community as well. It was recommended that this become an annual event. W. Hardeman advised that some qualification is required for the free will processing however,the information provided was excellent. E. Savoy reported the event was very successful. A. Martinez advised that Lindale Senior Center received information from a law student and it was very well received. Program Evaluation • E. Savoy advised that A. Martinez would provide the report. He also reported that he and W. Hardeman made several telephone contacts from the comment cards. • A. Martinez explained to the new members what the Program Evaluation program does and what information is received from the comment cards that are distributed with the meal service. • The report for March was as follows: 291 Intakes; 261 Satisfied; 27 Not Satisfied. There have been positive food and menu changes. ►SCS Division Program Updates General Highlights • E. Munoz thanked the new members for serving on the committee and advised that staff would be sending them information regarding new member orientation. Program Performance Review • C. Reschman reported 27 new clients were placed on the Meals on Wheels program. From 200 individuals previously on the waiting list, we now have 110 remaining. Contact has been made with everyone on the 2012 list. • Training has been ongoing with the Kitchen Supervisor and staff. An invitation was extended to all of the LCSS members to tour the Nutrition Education Service Center. • A health inspection was performed by the Health Department. The NESC received a 100 and a "Kitchen Cops" sticker of approval. 3 • R. Irwin inquired if the program was impacted by the recent budget sequestration. E. Munoz responded we were notified last year, in October of 2012, of pending budget constraints and took reductions at that time. She also reported we were the only program in the area to do so therefore lessening the impact of the reductions. • C. Mutchler inquired if it was possible to sponsor/donate to the meal program on line by using PAYPal. E. Munoz advised it was not possible at this time however, if anyone was interested in sponsoring/donating she would be happy to make a presentation and assist with preparing the paperwork. Senior Center Operations Report • L. Oliver reported that the Zavala Nutrition Site was vandalized. The copper pipes and air conditioning units were stolen and/or damaged. The City of Corpus Christi will replace the large air conditioning units however; the replacement estimate for the Senior Community Services Division will be approximately$9,000.00. • E. Munoz reported that Ethel Eyerly has been operating for 20 hours per week at the Waldron Road Baptist Church for the meal program while restroom renovations are continuing at the site. They are averaging approximately 40 meals per day. E. Savoy inquired if the City of Corpus Christi is compensating the Waldron Road Baptist Church for the use of their facilities. E. Munoz responded that the church is not being compensated. She advised that our offer to compensate the church was declined. The Waldron Road Baptist Church members and staff are providing the facility as a community service and outreach project. Po-Agenda Items for May 2013 Meeting Annual Retreat No-Old Business 2012 Strategic Plan Progress Report • I. Hobbs reported that the issue has been addressed. Senior Day at the Capitol • H. Lopez was absent last month due to illness and provided her report on the Senior Day at the Capitol trip. She stated that the event was well attended by many seniors throughout the state. It was very informative and she encouraged others to attend the event and take the opportunity to speak to our legislators. She thanked the committee for sponsoring her trip. ►Public Comment None ►Adjournment A motion was made by A. Martinez and seconded by R. Irwin to adjourn the meeting.
