HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Leadership Committee For Senior Services - 05/02/2013 Leadership Committee for Senior Services Meeting Minutes Garden Senior Center Thursday, May 2, 2013 ► The Meeting was called to order at 12:10 p.m. by B. Sayles, Chairperson. ►Roll Call Roll call was conducted by I. Hobbs. Members present: B. Sayles, I. Hobbs, W. Hardeman, E. Savoy, A. Martinez, H. Lopez, S. Beltz,J. Gomez, R. Irwin, and E. Flores. Members absent: B. Rye,V. Garza, L. Hardeman, C. Mutchler and K. Mutchler. ►Consider Committee member Attendance Issues • E. Munoz advised the committee that V. Garza will be submitting her resignation. No-Approval of Minutes • Minutes from the May 4, 2013 meeting were distributed for review. A motion was made by E. Savoy and seconded by S. Beltz to approve the minutes. The motion was unanimously approved. ►New Business Review 2013-2015 Site Councils&Special Events Committee Election Results • L. Oliver reported that the officer elections were completed and all of the positions were filled except the Sergeant at Arms at the Northwest Senior Center. Another attempt will be made to fill the position. • The Installation Ceremony for the Site Councils and Special Events Committees will be Friday, May 17, 2013 at the Garden Senior Center. The ceremony will start at 2:00 p.m. and is open to the public. The committee is invited and encouraged to attend. FY13 Federal Grant Budget Status • E. Munoz provided an overview of the budget status. A handout was provided to the committee with the breakdown of the Funding Summary FY13 for the Senior Community Services Division. E. Munoz explained that the budget is generated on planning amounts based on a funding formula provided by the Area Agency on Aging, which receives the monies and distributes them to the various providers. The Elderly Nutrition Program (ENP) Grant provides funding for Congregate Meals, Home Delivered Meals and Benefits Counseling with federal funding and MOW Title XX, state funding. The City of Corpus Christi is required to provide a ten percent match for the ENP Title III Grant. The City's general fund supports operations for the Senior Centers. Another recent source of funding is a grant from the Texas Department of Agriculture, Texans Feeding Texans,for Home Delivered Meals. 1 • Due to constraints placed on the budget by sequestration, the federal funding has not been received by the Area Agency on Aging to date. However, the State of Texas will be supplementing a portion of the shortfall this year. • J. Gomez inquired about services to the rural areas. E. Munoz explained that the City of Corpus Christi previously provided services; however, Nueces County Senior Community Services is now the service provider for the rural areas. • E. Savoy questioned if all 12 counties utilize the same dietician. E. Munoz responded that Jean Fields is the dietician for all of the counties. • R. Irwin made the observation that our program has its own kitchen and what do other programs utilize. E. Munoz explained that other programs, in the region, also operate their own kitchens. Other options are to purchase frozen or hot meals,from food service companies. FY 14 City Budget Overview • E. Munoz reported the FY 14 City of Corpus Christi budget will be the same as the FY 13 budget with minor changes. No additional budget cuts are anticipated. E. Munoz explained that City Council must review and approve the City budget, by the end of July. The new fiscal year for the City of Corpus Christi will begin August 1, 2013. No-Old Business None ►Identify Items to be Placed on Next Agenda • Proposal to amend the ordinance of the LCSS to appoint Ad Hoc Committees. • Community at Large vacancy due to V. Garza resignation. ►Public Comment None R. Irwin read the Proclamation for Older Americans Month by the City Council and presented it to B. Sayles, Committee Chairman. Mr. Irwin reported that seven of the eight senior centers were represented at the council meeting on April 29, 2013 and he was honored to represent the committee at the council meeting. ►Adjournment A motion was made by R. Irwin and seconded by A. Martinez to adjourn the meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 12:40 p.m. 2
