Meeting Minutes
Thursday, March 3, 2016
Zavala Senior Center
►The meeting was called to order 3:40 pm by D. Villagran, LCSS Chairperson.
►Roll Call Group Roll Call was initiated by T. Garcia.
Members present: G. Bryant, E. Flores,T. Garcia, W. Hardeman, R. Irwin, E. Savoy, and D. Villagran.
Members absent: Y. Recio (Out on Sick Leave), R. Buckwalter(Out on business)
►Approval of Minutes
The minutes from the February 4, 2016 meeting approved by E. Savoy, second by R. Irwin. All were in
favor.
►New Business
A. Review Bios
D. Villagran reviewed each biographical form with committee members. A ballot endorsing
potential members was distributed for 6 vacancies.The committee endorsed for Patricia
O'Brian, Sonny Fierro and Peggy Lewis for the Community at Large. For the Direct Service
Agency the committee endorsed Joanne Garcia and Joshua Garcia. For the Senior Center
Representative the committee endorsed Regina Chapa. R. Irwin motioned vote for
recommendation for membership. G. Bryant seconded the motion. All were in favor. The
motion was carried
B. Tour of Zavala Senior Center
For the end of meeting.The tour was conducted of facility after all other items on agenda were
commuted.
►LCSS Subcommittee Session/Project Status Report
A. Development&Special Events- E. Flores reports upcoming events on calendar:
• Designated week for March for Meals is March 21 through 25; no date has been
confirmed from Mayor's Office for the official date.
• Online registration for Chair Volleyball Senior League is March 7th-25th for all persons
50+. H. Lara mentions the League will be open to all community as well as the senior
center members. Cost per league is$100.00 or 12.50 per player for a team of eight(8).
Each team will receive a t-shirt and 1St and 2nd place winners will be awarded a medal. It
will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:OOp-3:OOp at the Ben Garza Gym.
• Coushatta Casino Trip tentatively scheduled for May 25tH-27tH
• A River Walk Day Trip has been scheduled in honor of the Older Americans Month for
May 19 with more details to come.
• G. Bryant will be interviewed on Majic 104.9 Radio Talks show with Abel Alonzo,
Tuesday at 7pm to brief on SCS.
• She is also handing out flyers at Artwalk and Bridgewalk event; and possibly trying for St.
Patrick's Day event.
• E. Flores awaiting letter head for Meals on Wheels Fundraiser.
• The Miles of Coins project to be presented to Principle at Veterans Memorial School.
B. Program Evaluation- E. Savoy reports the following:
• The Yellow Comment Cards have been a success; more input from members has been
noticed. In January 2016 with 88 positive comment cards and February 2016 with 104
positive comment cards.

• An upcoming event of the 47th Cottonwood Trip has been suggested, possibly interests
for the baby boomers.
• Garden Senior Center is putting together a NIA class similar to yoga with possible
interest to baby boomers.
• Wii Bowling tournament at Ethel Eyerly Senior Center scheduled for March 24th
C. Program Operations—Villagran requests that all plans to be accomplished will be handed out on
a spreadsheet that will be included in the monthly packet for all subcommittees.
• D. Villagran reported the set date for the Zavala Senior Center Grand Opening is March
31, 2016,from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm and invitations to be distributed.This event will be
hosted by the City and the WellMed Charitable Foundation.
►L. Oliver stated in the interest of time, reprints would be emailed to members.The LCSS members
where then given a tour of the Joe Garza Recreation Center and Zavala Senior Center
