Meeting Minutes
Thursday, June 2, 2016
Greenwood Senior Center
►The meeting was called to order at 3:35 pm by D. Villagran, LCSS Chairperson.
►Roll Call Roll Call was conducted by Elena Flores. Members present: G. Bryant, E. Flores, R. Irwin, S.
Fierro,J. Lawrence, P. Lewis, D. Villagran and P. O'Brien
Members absent: R. Buckwalter,T. Garcia,W. Hardeman,Y. Recio, E. Savoy, and J. Garcia
►Approval of Minutes
The minutes from the May 5, 2016 meeting approved by R. Irwin, second by P. O'Brien. All were in
favor.
►New Business
A. LCSS Member Vacancy
L. Oliver reported one vacancy with Community. She asked that members assist in recruiting an
additional person to fill that slot.
►LCSS Subcommittee Session/Project Status Report
A. Development&Special Events—G. Bryant reported upcoming events on calendar:
June
• 8th—Hurricane Preparedness Workshop 1-3p at Lindale with Maclovio Perez
• 13th—Summer Feeding Program
• 15th-17th—Coushatta Casino Trip (needing to fill 13 spots)
• 26th—Ms. Coastal Bend Senior Pageant at the Selena Auditorium from 3-5p
• 291h—Forever Young Celebration at Garden Senior Center from 2-4p
July—Parks and Recreation Month
• 4th—Independence Day/City Holiday—ALL centers closed
• 7th—LCSS meeting at Broadmoor Senior Center from 2:30-4:30p
• 21"- Corpus Christi Greatest Treasures at TBA
G. Bryant mentioned E. Flores working with the Rotary Club to sponsor a member—
needing to be approved and finalized. Also having handouts passed to inform
community of the Senior Community Services at the Bridge walk.
B. Program Evaluation- H. Lara reported the following:
• 55 comment cards reported for month of May.
• There was a report of the back door at Oveal Williams Senior Center that has bad odors.
H. Lara reported the issue was addressed and door has been replaced.
• Concerns of chairs being "too hard"from multiple comment cards from one site.
• Great reviews complementing all staff and restrooms in excellent condition.
• H. Lara reports the new exercise class to start soon to attract more Baby Boomers.
C. Program Operations—D. Villagran reported the following:
• Additional Fitness equipment to be place at one center to compare the recent traffic of
members at Zavala Senior Center. Plans to focus on one center with purchase of new
fitness equipment and once complete move on to the next site.The first location is the
Garden Senior Center. A consultation with the Fitness Advisor at Zavala Senior Center
for input on the most common equipment used or request by members will also be
conducted. A letter will be sent out to local businesses, such as insurance companies,
to be able to match funds to purchase equipment at center. Donors can be recognized
in the form of plaque or before the City Council.

• Action has been made to meet every month to make the goal for Accreditation by
December 2016. Next meeting at June 15th from 1-3p at City Hall.
• The name change on hold due to the Recreation program master plan being under
development. Plans to develop a trend moving in the direction of multi-generational
type center with older adult programming during the day then transitioning to a family
center in the afternoon.
• T. Garcia will be moving towards the partnership with local collages and university with
interior facility updates during the fall 2016.
• SCS has entered into a partnership with the TAMU-CC Community Nursing Students for
a clinical rotation at the Zavala Senior Center to gain exposure and evaluation of active
older adults and sedentary older adults.The nurses are also planning a community
health fair event at Zavala Senior Center in the month of July. Nursing Students will be
issuing a report at the end of their project.
• Audit update: P. Lewis has volunteered to look over the process and make suggestions
on improvement to help special events committee to develop a streamlined process.
• Zavala Senior center update: Entering 1St quarter, programing has continued to grow in
registering 220 new members since grand opening.A new challenge will be integrating
with the Summer Feeding Program beginning June 131H
Do-SCS Division program updates
A. General highlights—L. Oliver reported:
• May 24th-June 241h: Cool Corpus Christi Fan Drive Donations
• Beat the Heat taking in effect at Lindale and Greenwood Senior center to offer extended
programing in the afternoons with snakes at no cost to members.
• June 151h—World Elder Abuse Prevention Day Interfaith Prayer Service at 6pm
• City budget is in the beginning stages of submitting budgets for upcoming year. A
maintenance budget has been called meaning no increase and no decreases.
• The Zavala Senior Center Grand Opening had a successful attendance from community
and city staff.
B. Senior center operations—H. Lara reported the following:
• Two vacancies at Garden and Zavala Senior Center.The (1)full time and (1) part time
Administrative Support positions are available online now.
• Issues with thermostats and a few center;facility maintenance has been contacted to
resolve the issue.
• The back door has been replaced at Oveal Williams Senior Center.
C. Program performance reviews—C. Reschman reported the following:
• Preparation for Summer Feeding Program begins June 13—August 5.
• Elderly nutrition budget has made minor revisions after meeting with Area Agency on
Aging. Update will be address on next meeting.
• The$8,000 grant received last year is being used this year for extra walk in freezer.
