HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Leadership Committee For Senior Services - 10/04/20181 Leadership Committee for Senior Services (LCSS) Meeting Minutes Thursday, October 4, 2018 Garden Senior Center ►The meeting was called to order at 3:38 pm by D. Villagran, LCSS Chairperson. ►Roll Call Roll Call was conducted by T. Garcia. Members present: P. Lewis, M. Hansen, P. O’Brien, J. Meehleib, D. Villagran, K. Diggs, E. Flores, K. Heslip, G. Bryant and T. Garcia Members absent: W. Hardeman, E. Bell(Excused), Dr. M. Zhao and I. Garcia ►Approval of Minutes The meeting minutes for August 2nd were then approved by T. Garcia and seconded by P. O’Brien. All were in favor, none opposed. ►New Business A. Division Reorganization L. Oliver introduced new staff to the Senior Division, Brittney DeLeon for Program Manager and Rozella Puente for Assistant Program Manager, both over-seen by Program Services Superintendent, Henry Lara; the transition was in effect by October 1, 2018. R. Puente will begin attending committee meeting on a regular basis in the Program Evaluations subcommittee. B. Proposed Bond Projects 2018 L. Oliver issued the Proposed Bond project 2018 booklet to all committee members to inform them on the upcoming options available for all voters during this year’s election. L. Oliver informed all members of option C most suitable to the Senior Community Services as far as needs. Option C includes ADA improvements and mechanical/electrical improvements for senior centers. C. Policy on Scheduled Activities before Meal Service D. Villagran introduced the subject, J. Meehleib informed committee members of the inconvenience of scheduled guest speakers to arrive and present 30 mins prior to meal service. J. Meehleib mentioned the recent center lead has implemented a different schedule for outside presentations. L. Oliver informed all committee of the Guest Speaker Guidelines that will now be overseen by B. DeLeon. L. Oliver also reminded all committee members of No direct solicitation for Election at any sites. D. Reporting Vandalism/Graffiti at Senior Centers L. Oliver introduced Captain Abbott, Liaison for Parks Dept. and Detective Wicks. Captain Abbott informed members of reporting vandalism on the CCPD website by clicking on the “Cop Watch” tab. Anyone can report graffiti online. Once reported it will then be assigned by clean-up crew in about 24hrs. Any city facilities like senior centers, CCISD schools etc. are marked as priority. Once viewed on site the order is then sent to Det. Wicks for further investigation on criminal charges. Det. Wicks mentioned there being a difference between Tagging Crews and Gangs. Just in the last year 5 state jail/3rd degree taggers where filed due to $15,000-$23,000 in damages. Clean up operations are very aggressive with taggers. The gang unit is focused on the intelligence of gang members. Det. Wicks offered his direct office email (JustinW@cctexas.com) to be able to send graffiti photos for further evaluation. L. Oliver informed members of vandalism on site to first notify the center director so they can report their immediate supervisor, there is a reporting protocol that is then set in place. E. LCSS Committee Member Vacancy L. Oliver informed members, due to current City Election being held, the City board appointments are suspended until January 2019 when all council positions are then filled. This will give the committee some time for recruitment. 2 ►Old Business A. None ►LCSS Subcommittee Session/Project Status Report A. Special Events – N. Chavera gave most recent update on last fundraiser, La Tardeada/Afternoon Dance, raised $352.54 on bracelet sales and snacks at 72 bracelets sold. Expense cost totaled to $167.75 leaving a net of approx. $125.00 for the next event. The idea of Food Trucks and two music option in different rooms was not as successful as planned. Discussion of inside snacks to be sold for fundraising as well as just one room for music and dancing for next quarterly fundraiser. Next event in planning is Senior Day event on November 16th; location is still to be announced. Open Enrollment will also commence on October 14th; the Area Agency on Aging will host an Open Enrollment Event at their location on October 19th from 9AM-4PM. B. Program Evaluation – J. Meehleib reviewed comment cards for the month of September, totaling up to 3 in satisfactory and 1 in unsatisfactory due to meal item of Stewed Tomatoes. A request to discuss the food item with the Nutritionist was in request on the comment card. C. Program Operations – P. Obrien informed members of a revision on center hours at Broadmoor Center, showing at Monday stay at regular time (10AM-1PM) and Tuesday to Friday hours would now start at 9:30AM and close at 1:30PM. A proposal for Master Gardeners has been placed for the leasing of land behind Garden Senior Center. The plan is to build a plant teaching garden showing recommended plants for growth in South Texas. Garden would be fenced for protection. D. Fund Development – L. Oliver informed sub-committee members of the Share the Love webinar on Oct. 10th at 3:30pm for upcoming guidelines. Sub-committee is invited to channel in for notes. Last year’s earning was approx. $6000.00. ►SCS Division program updates A. General highlights/Senior Center Ops- Nutrition Program- Program performance reviews – L. Oliver informed committee of Jay Ellington’s, CC Parks Director, resignation. His last day is October 23rd. L. Oliver is currently working with H. Lara, B. DeLeon & R. Puente in the transition for the division reorganization. L. Oliver and H. Lara are also in the works to create a new position for Benefit Counseling that will rotate among sites. This will allow center Leads to focus on the center activities and special events. Work is scheduled to begin for damages from Hurricane Harvey. Update to come at next month’s meeting. ►Items for next Agenda None. ►Public comments James “T.C.” Chadden commented on comment cards completed at centers. Asked if he could have someone in the committee contact him as the cards are reviewed. He addresses the stewed tomatoes contained Ethanol A which is bad for center members health and asked to please remove from center menu. He also mentioned the white rice that is served during meal service is high in starch and is also bad for the center members. D. Villagran informed all that the request would be place on the agenda discussion for another time. ►Adjournment • The meeting adjourned at 4:53 pm.
