HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Leadership Committee For Senior Services - 05/01/2003 a LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE FOR SENIOR SERVICES City Hall—6th Floor Conference Room May 1, 2003 Russell Stowers called the meeting to order in the absence of Alan Bligh. A sign up sheet was passed around for attendance and the following absences were noted: Rex Amick, Diamantina Cisneros, Juanell Graham and Lucy Johnson. Marion Ball asked to be excused from April's meeting due to a car accident she sustained. A motion for approval was made by Anna Gonzales and seconded by Roland Medrano. The motion passed. RESIGNATIONS Elsa Munoz announced that Patricia Shufelt submitted her letter of resignation due to her husband's illness. In addition, Hilda Rodriguez has verbally advised that she will be resigning from the committee. MINUTES The meeting minutes for April were approved as submitted. Roland Medrano moved and second by Anna Gonzales. The motion was approved. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS: ❖ Program Operations—No Report. S• Program Evaluation—No Report. C. Funding& Resource—Russell Stowers reviewed the letter of solicitation for the upcoming Court Of Enchantment Coronation Ball sponsorship. Ms. Munoz recommended that the project should be rescheduled to allow adequate time for planning and sponsorship development. This suggestion was approved by general consensus. • Special Events—Lisa Oliver reported that the month of May is Older American's Month and the senior centers will host a variety of events as follows: ✓ May 5th—9`" Site Council Election of Officers I May 12th Coastal Bend Senior Fitness Day ✓ May 12th—17t Senior Center Week"Senior Centers Add More To Life" ✓ May 17t Oldies Sock Hop ✓ May 30th Installation of Officers &Members Sylvia Oliver reported that two representatives from the committee are needed to judge the essay contest with winners to be announced at the Coastal Bend Senior Fitness event. The event will include a 2-mile walk and the senior center with the most participants in the walk will be awarded a trophy. The May monthly SCANNED COO IMP calendar was also distributed. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Elsa Munoz reported on the following items: • Notification of Funds — letter was received and carryover funds in the amount of $100,000 (program wide) is pending. Based on criteria certain Area Agency on Aging are eligible for requesting carryover funds. The division has complied a wish list of items that will be submitted. • City Budget Process- for the departments has been completed. The City Council will be attending a retreat on Monday,April 7, 2003 to review all submittals. ❖ Home Delivered Meals Program - Senior Center Supervisors have been providing support for the vacant Outreach Worker caseloads. An estimated 65 referrals (requests for assistance) were received for the HDM Program for the month of March. Approximately 35 new clients were placed on the program and some referrals are still pending. Due to the large volume of client intakes we have been receiving it is possible that a waiting list or freeze on the Home Delivered Meal Program will be implemented. If a waiting list or freeze is implemented a notice and public announcement will be sent out. The division will continue to accept referrals and respond to emergency situations. ANNOUNCEMENTS ❖ Corpus Christi Legends—Sonia Garza displayed the t-shirts that were donated for the coed softball team. • Buc Parade - Deborah Henry announced that the contestants of the Ms. Coastal Bend Senior Pageant would be participating in the parade. A truck has been "loaned" for the event and it will be decorated at the Greenwood Senior Center tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. Ms. Felita will be attending the Ms. Texas Senior Pageant in Dallas this weekend. Therefore, other pageant representatives will be participating in the Buc Parade. •3 Fish Fry — Sylvia Oliver reported that Oveal Williams Senior Center had a successful fish fry. In conjunction with National Volunteer Week the center will host a free senior dance today from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. 4• Helene Fennessy—She was a great member of the SCS Advisory Committee. She was instrumental in the successful consolidation plan to establish the LCSS. Ms. Fennessy passed away in March. The committee observed a moment of silence to honor her memory. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. LEADE1SIIP COMMITTEE FOR SENIOR olleVICES ,. City Hall—6`"Floor Conference Room June 5, 2003 Alan Bligh called the meeting to order with Lucy Johnson conducting roll call. It was noted that Rex Amick was absent due to a conference in San Antonio. Lucy Johnson asked the committee to excuse her absence from May's meeting due to her husband's illness. It was moved by Anna Gonzales and seconded by Gloria Farias. Motion passed. RESIGNATIONS Alan Bligh announced that letter of resignations were received from Diamantina Cisneros (personal issues) and Juanell Graham(work related issues). MINUTES The meeting minutes for May were approved as submitted. Gloria Farias moved and seconded by Lucy Johnson. The motion was approved. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS: 4. Program Operations—No Report. ❖ Program Evaluation — Lucy Johnson reported that the subcommittee met and approved the Senior Companion Program annual survey that will be administered on June 30, 2003. 4• Funding & Resource — Lisa Oliver reported that modifications to the letter for sponsorship were made and a copy of the letter was distributed to the committee. Ms. Oliver noted that the King and Queen Coronation Ball has been rescheduled for Thursday, September 18, 2003. Lucy Johnson moved and Roland Medrano seconded to accept the letter with the following addition: to include a deadline date for submitting donations. S Special Events—No Report. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS •S New Staff— Lisa Oliver introduced Mary Ann Mondragon, Ethel Eyerly Senior Center Supervisor; Misty Cuellar— Staff Assistant at City Hall; Tina Carranza — Staff Assistant at Zavala Senior Center; Debra Arismendez — Student from the University of Houston MSW Program. Debra Arismendez will be working on the following projects: Walk Across Texas and the Senior Center Accreditation process. 1• Senior Fitness Day—The event kicked off with a walk and had approximately 500 in attendance. All senior centers were closed for the event. 45 Oveal Williams Senior Center—Due to various difficulties with the phone system a new phone system has been installed and is working well. 1 Site Council Elections — The elections have been completed and the Installation Ceremony was held at the Lindale Senior Center on May 30, 2003. Roland Medrano was the Master of Ceremonies. Anna Gonzales acknowledged the Senior Community Services Division staff for a job well done in hosting the event. C. Bond Projects 2004 — The following items were submitted to the Department: • Expansion to the Broadmoor Senior Center, parking lot improvements, fire and alarm systems for all senior centers and development for a multigenerational community center. :• Carryover Funds from Area Agency on Aging—The agency has approved purchase • of a delivery vehicle at an estimated cost of$31,500 for the Nutrition Service and Education Center. A submittal for equipment needs (tables and chairs) for the Ethel Eyerly Senior Center was denied. The grant award is pending approval from Council of Governments and Area Agency on Aging Advisory Committee. ❖ Program Performance — The Elderly Nutrition Program is currently 8% below contract level for Cl meals. Staff is working to outline strategies for increasing Cl meals for program participation, which ends on September 30, 2003. The Home Delivered Meal Program (C2 meals) is on target and will meet contract level. In addition,the Benefits Counseling Units are also below contract level. ❖ RSVP — Staff is currently working on MOU's, upgrading information at the Volunteer Stations and working with the airport to establish new programs to include possible benefits for volunteers such as lunch and mileage. Mr. Kirkpatrick will be attending a conference in Baltimore,Maryland next week. • RTA Travel Buddy -Ward Kirkpatrick reported meeting with RTA regarding the "Travel Buddy" Program. This program will need to be revisited to allow the Travel Buddy to ride for free before initiating to the public. NEW BUSINESS Alan Bligh reported that a letter was received from the 1937 Art and Culture Club Members requesting approval for installing a photo plaque of Mrs. Grace Cummings in the Grace Cummings Conference Room located at the Oveal Williams Senior Center. After a brief review of the background of Mrs. Cummings the motion was moved by Anna Gonzales and seconded by Pauline Johnson to allow the photo to be placed in conference room. All were in favor. ANNOUNCEMENTS ❖ 06/09/03 at 3:00 p.m., Senior Community Services Division will be conducting a program update presentation at the Area Agency on Aging. • 06/09/03—Oveal Williams Senior Center will be celebrating Juneteenth. 4 06/12/03 — Senior Centers and Nutrition Education and Service Center Closed Due to Staff In-Service. S• 06/13/03—Men's Breakfast at the Oveal Williams Senior Center at 7:30 a.m. ❖ 06/30/03—Senior Centers Closed due to Provider's Training. 2 There being no further bffsiness, the meeting was adjourned. 3
