A moment of silence was observed for Daniel Whitworth,Director of Park& Recreation. MINUTES The meeting minutes for June were approved as written moved by Helga Graham and seconded by Lucy Johnson. COMMITTEE REPORTS: > Program Operations—No report. S. Program Evaluation —Lucy Johnson stated that a full report would be provided at next month's meeting. Si. Funding & Resource — Lillian Narvaez reported that a deadline date for accepting contributions was added to the letter for sponsorship. Mrs. Narvaez also reported that all senior centers have contentsants for the Coronation Ball scheduled for Thursday, September 18, 2003. ➢ Special Events — Ward Kirkpatrick announced that Helga Graham is the new chairperson and the subcommittee will be meeting the last Thursday of each month at 3:00 p.m. Roland Medrano was appointed as recording secretary. It was suggested that volunteers should take trips to cities to view exhibits and historical sites PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: D MC Director of Park & Recreation — Elsa Munoz announced David Ondrias as acting in charge(AIC)Director for the Park &Recreation Department. > Citizen Complaint - A citizen complaint regarding the milk change at the senior centers was printed in this week's Sound Off. In addition, a formal complaint regarding the same issue was submitted to City Council. Ms. Munoz will draft a response and explained that the change to 2%milk was made to enhance accuracy and service delivery time to the Home Delivered Meal clients. It will also result in a significant cost benefit. Si. Carryover Funds — The division has received approval of the $31,500 in carryover funds requested from the Area Agency on Aging to purchase a new van SCANNED 1 1110 J for the Elderly Nutrition Program. > Request for Proposal - Lisa Oliver, Thomas Smith, Vivian Benavides and Elsa Munoz will be working on the Request for Proposal (RFP) for the Elderly Nutrition Program 2004 budget year, which begins on October 1, 2003. ➢ Grant Renewal — The Senior Companion Program and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program are preparing their state grant renewal funded by the Texas Department on Aging. ➢ SCS Fans Project—The Home Delivered Meal drivers have initiated a project to assist the elderly who are in need of a fan. The drivers have received help from friends, family and neighbors in donating and purchasing fans. The drivers have also had an air conditioner donated. Drivers have been working with Roland Medrano with the Texas Department of Human Services by referring individuals who need assistant in paying their utilities and/or purchasing fans or air conditioners. ➢ LCSS— The committee currently has four vacancies (1 SCP, 1 RSVP, 1 Agency and 1 At-Large) and is recruiting interested individuals. You can pick up a biographical form from Connie Reschman and have interested individuals submit it to the division or forward it to the City Secretary's Office for process. ➢ Broadmoor Senior Center—Is currently undergoing an engineering study to look at structural issues. A report will be forwarded to the division next week > Greenwood Senior Center — Lisa Oliver is coordinating with Santos Villarreal, Park&Recreation Department Marketing Specialist to develop a color scheme for painting the center. Once the selection is made it will be proposed to the Site Council for feedback. ➢ Lindale Senior Center— Karen Middleton, professor at Texas A&M University, Lindale Site Council and the Lindale Recreation Center will host a joint service learning project for graduate students on Monday,July 14, 2003. > Rose Garden Dedication — On Friday, July 18, 2003 the family of Fernando Garza and the Lindale Site Council will dedicate a Rose Garden in memory of Hortencia Garza. > Community Education - The Training and Encouraging Senior Activity (TESA) Workshop is scheduled for August 7th and 8th at the Bayfront Plaza Convention Center Room 225 at 2:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided. ➢ Walk Across Texas—A project celebration is scheduled for August 13th at 2:00 p.m. at Greenwood Senior Center. 2 • imr > Monthly Calendar — Lisa Oliver distributed July monthly calendars and encouraged that recommendations for activities be forwarded to her. > All America City- Elsa Munoz congratulated Lisa Oliver for serving as a member of the all America City finalist delegation > RSVP— Martha Fleming, Program Specialist with the CNCS will be monitoring the Retired Senior and Volunteer Program on July 23'd through July 25th. The LCSS Committee Chairperson and subcommittee chairs are invited to a luncheon on Thursday, July 25th at Jezebels. Program performance issues and related information will be discussed. The program is also seeking volunteers to fill a clerical role assigned to the RSVP administrative office at City Hall. Administrative program support would greatly enhance administrative operations. Anyone interested can contact Mr. Kirkpatrick at 880-3199. ➢ SCP— In conjunction with RSVP, they will host another Recruitment, Retention Recognition trip to Coushatta on September 22°d, 23rd and 24'h. The trip will include 4 meals and a 2-night stay. Cost for volunteers is $40.00 and guests are $50.00. OLD BUSINESS: Alan Bligh provided an update on the progress of purchasing or securing donated exercise equipment for the Garden Senior Center Wellness Center. Mr. Bligh met with a staff person from HEST Fitness, and they submitted a bid for treadmills and stationary bikes. Mr. Bligh will present a proposal to the Coastal Bend Community Foundation for the project. It was suggested by the committee that contact with a manufacturer could help lower the cost or possibly have an item donated. A letter will be drafted by the Chairperson. ANNOUNCEMENTS: • 07/01/03 Lindale Senior Center Dance served 125 individuals. • 07/02/03 Open House Breakfast at Ethel Eyerly Senior Center. • 07/29/03 Dinner&Movie at Broadmoor Senior Center from 12:30—4:00 p.m. • 08/01/03 Rummage Sale at Broadmoor Senior Center. • Deborah Henry announced that the Greenwood Senior Center is collecting items for a Rummage Sale. Date of the Rummage Sale will be announced at a later time. There being no further business,the meeting was adjourned. 3
