HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Leadership Committee For Senior Services - 08/07/2003 1/4110 ri LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE FOR SENIOR SERVICES City Hall—6th Floor Conference Room August 7, 2003 Alan Bligh called the meeting to order with Lucy Johnson conducting roll call. Rex Amick requested to be excused for the following months: May (mother ill), June (attended a meeting in San Antonio) and July(ill). Request was approved. MINUTES The meeting minutes for July were approved with a motion by Lucy Johnson and seconded by Apolonia Cantu. COMMITTEE REPORTS: > Program Operations—No report. > Program Evaluation — Lucy Johnson reported on the annual evaluation survey results for the Senior Companion Program. (Attachment"A") > Funding & Resource — Lillian Narvaez provided an update on the Coronation Ball. Mrs. Narvaez stated that all senior centers have contestants and that donations for the refreshments have been secured. > Special Events — Helga Graham reported that she and Marion Ball would be assisting staff in coordinating upcoming Senior Community Services special events. The next meeting is scheduled for August 28, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. at the Garden Senior Center. The planning process for the Holiday Dinner has been initiated and details will be outlined at the next meeting. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: > Budget—City Council has approved the '03-'04 budget and a new listing of rental fees and changes have been forwarded to all senior centers. New fees became effective on August 1,2003. > Nutrition Education and Service Center — Staff is addressing the following issues at the new facility: walk in freezer timer is not connected; identified a leak in the hand washing sink and pot hole repairs are needed on the driveway entrance. S. New Van — Specifications have been forwarded to the Purchasing Department. The purchase must be completed by September 31, 2003. > City Council Agenda Item — Staff is processing an agenda item to appropriate funds from the Area Agency on Aging. Target Council date is August 26,2003. SCANNED I 41111 V > Sr. Day at Bayfest— The annual event is scheduled for Saturday, September 20, 2003 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Bayfront Plaza Convention Center. Elsa Munoz is the project Co-chair. Lisa Oliver, Mary Ann Mondragon, and Gracie Canales will also be assisting with the event. The itinerary includes free admission to Bayfest, a dance featuring the Charlie Beckman Orchestra, an art exhibit and refreshments. ➢ Request For Proposal— Lisa Oliver is leading the budget development phase of the annual Elderly Nutrition Program Request for Proposal to the Area Agency on Aging. Staff does not anticipate any major service level changes, nor do we anticipate any increases in funding. ➢ Next LCSS Meeting—Helga Graham recommended that the next meeting be held at the Nutrition Education and Service Center for a tour of the facility. The recommendation was approved. Directions (Attachment"B"). > RSVP— Ward reported that the recent monitoring visit went well. Ms. Fleming noted that LCSS members are very knowledgeable and supportive of the volunteer program. Volunteer Station representatives also shared insights about the program and offered recommendations for improvements. Staff is currently finalizing the quarterly newsletter. ➢ Broadmoor Senior Center—Staff and volunteers hosted their first National Night Out block party with approximately 80 people in attendance. > Walk Across Texas—An event celebration will be held at the Greenwood Senior Center on August 13,2003. Project team`winners"will be announced. ➢ TESA — Workshop is scheduled for August 7th and 8t at the Bayfront Plaza Convention Center from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. > Grandparents Raising Grandchildren—The photo contest deadline has been extended until August 15,2003. Ms. Oliver encouraged all LCSS members to participate. ➢ Outreach—Oveal Williams Senior Center will host a Senior Awareness Day on August 20, 2003 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. > Congratulations- Sonia Garza,Norma Rodriguez and Sylvia Oliver successfully completed the Benefits Counselor I Certification. OLD BUSINESS: Ms. Munoz inquired about the status of a proposal from the 1937 Arts and Culture Club. She was advised that the request was approved by the LCSS at July 2003 meeting. Lisa Oliver will forward a formal written notice of approval to the 1937 Arts and Cultural Club Chairperson. NEW BUSINESS: Alan Bligh proposed a plan to develop an Insurance Counseling Program to educate senior center members about health insurance. Mr. Bligh presented a brief overview of the program. He explained that volunteers from legitimate insurance companies would be scheduled to come to the center and review individual coverage plans. They would then offer recommendations based on their findings. In many cases, individuals have excess coverage and/or are paying for insurance even though they are Medicaid eligible. Mr. 2 400 Bligh noted that volunteers would be screened very carefully before the project commenced. Ms. Munoz clarified that the Benefits Counselors currently provide this type of service, in addition to comprehensive social service issues on an individual client basis. LCSS member, Roland Medrano stated that he would like to include a session on available assistance offered through the Nueces County Department of Human Services. This program as outlined by Mr. thigh would target a specific topic (insurance) to members attending the center on the day of the program. LCSS members endorsed the proposal and approved plans to pilot the project at the Oveal Williams Senior Center. ANNOUNCEMENTS: ➢ Coronation Ball Fundraisers Ethel Eyerly Senior Center: Pancake Breakfast and Rummage Sale, Saturday, August 9,2003. Spaghetti Dinner,August 22,2003 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There being no further business,the meeting was adjourned. 3
