HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Leadership Committee For Senior Services - 10/02/2003 I4 LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE FOR SENIOR SERVICES City Hall—6th Floor Conference Room October 2,2003 Alan Bligh called the meeting to order with Lucy Johnson conducting roll call. Pauline Johnson requested to be excused for the month of August due to illness. Anna Gonzales moved and Lucy Johnson seconded. The motion was approved. Mr. Bligh stated that no meeting was held in September due to lack of a quorum. Elsa Munoz noted that a letter would be sent to Russell Stowers regarding his absences in accordance with the by-laws. MINUTES The meeting minutes for August were approved with a motion by Helga Graham and seconded by Apolonia Cantu. COMMITTEE REPORTS: ➢ Program Operations—Lisa Oliver reported that the division was collaborating on a joint project (American Democracy Project) with Texas A&M University and hosted a reception at the Lindale Senior Center on September 23, 2003. Students from the University will plan, fund and facilitate the renovation of the senior center library and upgrades to the irrigation system at the Lindale Recreation Center. Monetary donations from local community businesses have been confirmed and will be used towards the purchase of new furnishings. Plans include interior painting of the Lindale Senior Center with paint donated by Home Depot. A project completion celebration will be held on December 16, 2003. ➢ Program Evaluation — Lucy Johnson reported that the results of the Senior Companion Program annual evaluation were attached to the August meeting minutes. The next survey will be conducted on food service at the senior centers. ➢ Funding&Resource—Lisa Oliver provided a financial report for the Coronation Ball that was held on September 18, 2003. Event participants included senior center members, Foster Grandparents and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. Approximate event funds total was $8,102.00 with $315.76 of expenses (music, trophies, decorations, etc.) leaving a balance of $7,786.63 to fund the 2003 Holiday Dinner. All senior center supervisors were congratulated for their outstanding performance in coordinating the event. Ms. Munoz noted that they successfully directed the most profitable fundraiser in program history. ➢ Special Events — Helga Graham reported that the subcommittee members are continuing plans for the Holiday Dinner including decorations, menu and programming. Nutrition Education and Service Center staff hosted a taste test to SCANNED 1 (1110 obtain LCSS member feedback on proposed menu enhancements. Menu selections included prime rib; roast beef; praline sweet potatoes; rice pilaf and parmesan spinach. Leticia Ochoa, Kitchen Supervisor and Mary Lou Holguin, Cook did an excellent job in preparing the elaborate meal. LCSS members and guests were quite impressed! The event coordinators include Helga Graham, Marion Ball, Sonia Garza and Gina Sanchez. Mrs. Graham proposed and Anna Gonzales seconded the motion that all future events are presented to the Special Events Subcommittee for review and endorsement prior to full committee approval. This year's Holiday Dinner theme is "A Candy Lane Christmas" and will be held at the Bayfront Plaza Convention Center Banquet Hall from 2:00 p.m.to 6:00 p.m. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: > Texas Joint Conference on Aging — The conference will be held at the Omni Bayfront Hotel in Corpus Christi on April 25'11-28th, 2004. All staff will be involved in hosting the event. > City Hall 6th Floor Concession — Tom Smith, Nutrition Coordinator is working on a subcommittee to obtain bids and proposals for operating the 6'11 Floor Concession at City Hall. The division is exploring the possibility of operating the café. > Coushatta Trip — The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and Senior Companion Program hosted a Recruitment, Retention and Recognition trip. There were approximately 125 guests who enjoyed the outing. > Flu Shots — The division is currently working with the Health Department in coordinating the annual Flu Shot Clinics at all senior centers. Flyers will be distributed and the schedule will be included in the RSVP Newsletters. > Airport Ambassadors—Mr. Kirkpatrick is collaborating with Airport officials to initiate the RSVP Ambassador's project. The project will consist of volunteers welcoming tourists to our City and providing information and assistance as needed. All volunteers will receive free parking, a free meal, paid mileage and a vest. Approximately 50 volunteers are being recruited to work various shifts. > Galvan Elementary School - RSVP is recruiting volunteers as reading tutors. > Senior Companion Program — Elsa Munoz announced that Larry Imhoff, Program Coordinator was appointed for the National Senior Companion Program Directors and recently returned from a meeting in Washington, D.C. Mr. Imhoff announced that the program has received their State Notice of Grant Award. 2 > Kitchen —Tom Smith submitted a grant proposal to the Kennedy Foundation for kitchen equipment. Mr. Smith announced that 286,775 meals were served for the 2002-2003 fiscal year. > Sr. Day at Bayfest - Lisa Oliver reported that the event had good participation and thanked Gracie Canales, Leticia Ochoa, Sonia Garza and Mary Ann Mondragon for their assistance. ANNOUNCEMENTS: > Garden Senior Center—The Site Council will host a Rummage Sale on Friday, October 3, 2003. ➢ Tuloso Midway High School Health Fair— Sonia Garza and Sylvia Oliver will be working this event. > Ethel Eyerly Senior Center — The Site Council will host a Brisket Dinner on October 4, 2003 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. > Greenwood Senior Center — Deborah Henry announced that the center is now offering computer classes on Tuesday's and Thursday's at 12:30 p.m. The Site Council has also purchased an additional computer for the program. ➢ Oveal Williams Senior Center — Will host a Dinner & Dance on Friday, October 10, 2003 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Monday Night Football and Dinner on October 20,2003. Si- Week Without Violence — A special presentation on Elder Abuse will be conducted at the YMCA on October 21, 2003. > Rosario Garcia — Oldest active RSVP volunteer and Greenwood Senior Center member will be celebrating her 98th Birthday on October 7th at 11:30 a.m. at the Greenwood Senior Center. Plans include a special presentation, entertainment, media coverage and refreshments. ➢ Nueces County Texas Department of Human Services — Roland Medrano announced that the 1909 Trojan Drive Office will be closing and staff will relocating to the Nueces County Courthouse, 3'^Floor by November 2003. > Ms. National Senior America and Ms. National America Classic Woman Pageants — Elsa Munoz announced that proposals to host the 2004 National Pageant were submitted to both organizations. 3 hi There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. 4
