LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE FOR SENIOR SERVICES
City Hall—6th Floor Conference Room
November 6, 2003
Alan Bligh called the meeting to order with Lucy Johnson conducting roll call. Rex
Amick requested to be excused from October's meeting due to work related issues. Anna
Gonzales moved and Roland Medrano seconded. Motion approved.
MINUTES
The meeting minutes for October were approved with a motion by Rex Amick and
seconded by Anna Gonzales.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
> Program Operations—No report given.
> Program Evaluation — Lucy Johnson reported that the subcommittee is working
on finalizing the RSVP survey and it will be distributed in two weeks. The next
project will be to evaluate the Nutrition Program, which will include the Meals
On Wheels Program and the senior center participants. The survey will also
include the taste, color, appearance and some cold and hot food items. Tom
Smith,Nutrition Coordinator will be involved in conducting the survey.
> Funding&Resource—No report given.
> Special Events — Helga Graham reported that the subcommittee is working
towards the upcoming Holiday Dinner. Entertainment will involve the Carroll
High School Choir, Harold Smith as Santa Claus, David Crawford, pianist, Senior
Pageant Crown Club will do a skit and the Harbor Playhouse will also conduct a
skit. Decorations are 80% completed, menu has been approved, publication is at
70% completed, transportation is still pending, 85 city volunteer forms have been
received and door prizes are pending. The Holiday Dinner is scheduled for
Thursday, December 11,2003 from 2:00 p.m.to 6:00 p.m.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
> New Fiscal Year — October 1, 2003 started the new fiscal year for Senior
Community Services. The division has received the Notice of Intent to Contract.
> Rosario Garcia — RSVP celebrated Rosario Garcia's 98 birthday with a
celebration held at the Greenwood Senior Center.

> Oliver Packaging Machine— On October 2, 2003 a new packaging machine was
delivered at no cost. The only cost is the purchase of the trays.
S. Flu Shot Clinic — Are currently being conducted at all senior centers. No firm
number of shots administered has been reported at this time.
➢ OLPH Health Fair — On October 19, 2003 staff from Senior Community
Set-vices manned a booth at the OLPH Health Fair.
➢ Building & Grounds Custodians — SCS Custodians have been conducting
extensive floor work with Park & Recreation staff. Custodians will adopt a new
floor maintenance system. The next center for refumishing is the Northwest
Senior Center,which is scheduled for November 15, 2003.
> Week Without Violence — Staff was involved with Week Without Violence
hosted by YWCA. Lisa Oliver conducted presentations. The event received
excellent coverage by media.
S. Citizen Complaint— A citizen complaint was filed with Elsa Munoz in October
regarding an R&R Delivery driver. Ms. Munoz will set up a meeting with
Russell, the contractor, to address the concern. The complaint filed was resolved
to the client's satisfaction. The complaint was regarding the delivery time and
packing.
> Governor's Leadership Conference—RSVP & SCP Staff were out of the office
on October 25th through October 28th attending a conference.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
> Garden Senior Center—The Site Council will host a Rummage Sale on Friday,
October 3, 2003.
➢ Tuloso Midway High School Health Fair— Sonia Garza and Sylvia Oliver will
be working this event.
> Ethel Eyerly Senior Center — The Site Council will host a Brisket Dinner on
October 4, 2003 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
> Greenwood Senior Center — Deborah Henry announced that the center is now
offering computer classes on Tuesday's and Thursday's at 12:30 p.m. The Site
Council has also purchased an additional computer for the program.
➢ Oveal Williams Senior Center — Will host a Dinner & Dance on Friday,

October 10, 2003 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Monday Night Football and
Dinner on October 20,2003.
D. Week Without Violence — A special presentation on Elder Abuse will be
conducted at the YMCA on October 21, 2003.
➢ Rosario Garcia — Oldest active RSVP volunteer and Greenwood Senior Center
member will be celebrating her 98th Birthday on October 7th at 11:30 a.m. at the
Greenwood Senior Center. Plans include a special presentation, entertainment,
media coverage and refreshments.
➢ Nueces County Texas Department of Human Services — Roland Medrano
announced that the 1909 Trojan Drive Office will be closing and staff will be
relocating to the Nueces County Courthouse, 3'd Floor by November 2003.
➢ Ms. National Senior America and Ms. National America Classic Woman
Pageants — Elsa Munoz announced that proposals to host the 2004 National
Pageant were submitted to both organizations.
➢ Ambassador's Program — The program kicked off on November 3rd with 11
volunteers assisting in providing information to visitors. Additional volunteers
are needed to work all shifts.
➢ RSVP—volunteers through the month of October have generated 70,899 hours.
➢ STAR Awards —Gloria Carrillo, SCP Volunteer was nominated and the winner
of this year STAR Awards due to her hard work and dedication to the program.
Additional RSVP volunteers were also nominated.
➢ SCP—Larry Imhoff, SCP Coordinator received the Notice of Grant Award in the
amount of$4,375.00. Mr. Imhoff is also working on increasing the unit rate from
$5.50 to $6.00 with the Area Agency on Aging vendor agreement.
➢ Web Development - Gina Sanchez, Linda Ramirez and Connie Reschman will
be attending technology training in Dallas, Texas on November 9th thru 12'. The
training will be provided by Senior Corp. staff and will enhance staffs
professional growth and development.
➢ Partnerships for Aging Conference — Elsa Munoz, Lisa Oliver and Larry
Imhoff will be attending the conference in Tulsa, OK from November 10th thru
14'".
NEW BUSINESS:
D. Coronation Ball—The committee viewed a video presentation on the coronation

ball and a recommendation was made to send a copy of the video to all senior
centers.
> 2004 Meeting Locations - Elsa Munoz explained the reason for the rotation is
for committee members to conduct a site visit, tour and visit with staff. In
addition, have lunch on a monthly basis at a senior center of their choice. It was
recommended that a courtesy call be made to all members before the meeting. It
was approved by committee members to have a rotation schedule for 2004.
> Nominating Committee - Alan Bligh reported that a nominating committee
needed to be appointed. The following members were nominated: Anna
Gonzales,Roland Medrano and Lucy Johnson.

11/08/03—Northwest Senior Center Site Council Fall Festival, 11 am—4 pm
11/15/03—Ethel Eyerly Senior Center Senior Site Council Spaghetti Dinner 4-7 pm
12/05/03—Ethel Eyerly Senior Center Holiday Dinner 4-7 pm
12/16/03 —Lindale Senior Center Fiesta Celebration for the Texas A&M Corpus Christi
Learning Project 7-9 pm
12/24/03 —H-E-B Feast Of Sharing, press conference scheduled for 12/4/03. Referrals
will be accepted after press conference and deadline is 12/19/03.
02/01/04 -Ms. Coastal Bend Sr. Pageant
> Roland Medrano reported that the Texas Department of Human Services has
relocated to the Nueces County Courthouse. Mr. Medrano gave the following
new phone numbers: 888-0828 (Roland's direct line); 888-0837 (main line); 888-
0838 (fax).
> Lillian Narvaez reported that the Lindale Senior Center phone lines are down and
is currently using a cell phone(815-1669)for communication.
