Northwest Senior Center—9725 Up River Road
February 5,2004
Roland Medrano called the meeting to order with Connie Reschman conducting roll call.
Committee members and staff present introduced and welcomed guest Lou Trlica and
Donna Cisneros to the meeting.
CORRESPONDENCE
Roland Medrano read letters of resignation from Russell Stowers and Gloria Farias.
MINUTES
The meeting minutes for January were approved with a motion by Apolonia Cantu and
seconded by Alan Bligh.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
> Program Operations-Alan Bligh reported that the subcommittee met and reviewed
their roles and responsibilities. The subcommittee will focus on the following issues:
1. Monthly Site Visitations—There will be an emphasis on providing a
timely response,either verbal and/or written to all inquiries or concerns.
2. Program data review—Monthly statistical data reports will be developed
with staff input.
3. Senior Center Accreditation—Members will identify 2004 Goals and
Objectives, identify"community"stakeholders, establish project timeline
and provide monthly progress reports.
This subcommittee will meet on the fourth Thursday of each month and all members
are welcomed.
> Program Evaluation -The program survey will be distributed at the next
meeting.
> Funding&Resource-No report.
Q ➢ Special Events-Helga Graham reported the following:
7 • 2004 Ms. Coastal Bend Senior Pageant: 15 contestants will compete in the
7L pageant scheduled for February 1, 2004 at the Selena Auditorium.
Representatives from the Ms. Texas Senior Pageant have confirmed their
attendance.
CO • 2003 Holiday Dinner: It was requested that staff provide an updated
expenditure report for review at the next meeting. Members commented
that there were too many door prizes distributed and that this activity
"lingered" on throughout the event. It was suggested that other options be
explored (i.e., secure higher value prizes such as Televisions, DVD's, etc.
and limit small items).
• 2004 Holiday Dinner: Members offered their assistance for involvement in
planning this year's event. Staff has recommended that the planning
meetings be initiated as early as possible. The target date for the first
meeting will be March 2004.
• Recruitment, Retention and Recognition Program(RSVP/SCP):
I. San Antonio Holiday Lights Tour was hosted in December. It was
suggested that future tours include an educational component with
artistic, cultural, geographic and historical emphasis.
2. Progresso, Mexico Tour is scheduled for March 25, 2004.

> PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS—Elsa Munoz,Superintendent
• Monthly Calendar—The Senior Center Monthly Activity Calendar
(February 2004)was distributed to members.
• Division Planning Calendar—A draft of the 2004 SCS Annual Program
Calendar was presented to the members for review and comments. A
revised copy will be distributed at the March meeting. This planning tool
will be updated monthly.
• Facility Maintenance Crew—Senior and Recreation Center Custodians
have initiated a project for refurbishing the floors at all senior centers as of
October 2002. All facilities are looking very nice and clean as staff
identify and complete minor repairs at the centers. The crew will be
finishing up the floor project in late March and will begin a paint project in
April.Ms. Munoz encouraged LCSS members to acknowledge staff efforts
whenever they visit a center.
• CDBG—Hearings are scheduled for February 18'h at 5:30 p.m. in the City
Council Chambers and February 25th(Adoption Meeting at 12:00 p.m.).
The division has submitted for facility improvements to all Senior Centers
and for the Broadmoor Senior Center expansion project.
• Texas Conference on Aging—This conference attracts professionals in
the field of aging, as well as social workers, activity directors, senior
center directors,volunteer services directors, and others. The event will be
hosted in Corpus Christi at the Omni Bayfront Tower Hotel,April 25th—
April 28th. SCS staff is involved with the Local Arrangements Planning
Subcommittee in the following areas: Food/Beverage,Awards,Hospitality
Suite,Door Prizes/Donations,Audio Visuals, and Publicity.

➢ Membership: The committee members endorsed the following candidates to fill
current vacancies:
Donna Cisneros -RSVP
Juan Del Bosquez- SCP
Lou Trlica—Direct Service Agency
Barbara Deguzis—Community At Large
Curtis Ford—Community At Large
Hope Franklin—Community At Large
Si: Subcommittees: A Standing Committee List was distributed and members were
invited to sign up for a subcommittee of their choice. Active involvement in
subcommittee work is strongly encouraged.
➢ LCSS Retreat: The members were provided with ballots to survey preferences for
the retreat date. Choices included: Thursday, April 1`; Saturday, April 3rd;
Thursday, May 6th; and Saturday, May 22nd.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned.
