HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Leadership Committee For Senior Services - 07/01/2004 a LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE FOR SENIOR SERVICES Greenwood Senior Center— 4040 Greenwood July 1, 2004 Committee members were welcomed by Deborah Henry to Greenwood Senior Center and invited committee members to stay for the senior center's July 4th celebration. Roland Medrano opened with prayer and welcomed committee members present to take opportunity to visit Greenwood Senior Center. Marion Ball distributed the sign-in roster. Quorum not met. Elsa contacted additional committee members, one additional member on the way. Elsa Munoz and Roland Medrano discussed committee member absences, By- Law procedures to address absences,and the impact of absences on subcommittees. INTRODUCTIONS Roland Medrano opened the floor to public announcements. Lisa Oliver shared with the Committee information regarding the Mayor's Council on Senior Citizen Affairs Corpus Christi's Greatest Generation Award nomination process,deadline(July 9,2004), and dinner to take place on July 22,2004. With an additional committee member on the way,Roland Medrano asked members for consensus on whether to proceed with opening the meeting and waiting to vote on any actionable matters until quorum present; the committee agreed. Roland Medrano called meeting to order and led the pledge of allegiance. MINUTES A motion to receive and file the Minutes from the June 2004,meeting was made by Lucy Johnson and seconded by Mrs. Apolonia Cantu. Motion carried. COMMITTEE REPORTS S. Program Operations—Alan Bligh Reviewed highlights from the June 23rd committee meeting as follows: ✓ The Member Survey Form ✓ The committee reviews program data from ENP, SCP and RSVP on monthly basis. Program data available on request. SCANNED iro Site Input The Programs committee is responsible for listening concerns from center participants. Two concerns have been brought to committee: 1. Greenwood—participant complaining of smoking at Greenwood Center. Lisa Oliver will check city codes,city rules, state rules and background to guide in decision. Of interest is the designation of smoking areas at City facilities. Lisa will report back to committee on findings. The Committee is aware that any decision about designated smoking at Greenwood will affect all centers. 2. Ethel Eyerly—men's restroom. 40 Participants at Ethel Eyerly have signed and presented a petition requesting additional toilet facility. There is concern about maintaining ADA compliance. City engineers are exploring options and will give presentation explaining ADA requirements at Ethel Eyerly on July 8,2004 at 9:30 a.m. Accreditation After exploring the NISC website and reviewing NISC accreditation program,and all forms necessary for accreditation, the committee brings two(2)recommends to the committee. The first recommendation is to proceed with the accreditation process for the following reasons: 1. Already meet most of the criteria; 2. Prestigious;maybe the 2"^city in Texas to be accredited; 3. Stand out in competition for grants; 4. Accreditation may be required in future. The second recommendation is made only if the committee recommends proceeding with accreditation. The second recommendation is to pursue accreditation for the entire senior center system. 1. All criteria applies to all senior centers and will not generate extra work. 2. Singling out a single center may cause hurt feelings. The fees for accreditation are based on a percentage of the operating budget for the agency. The vote on accreditation and then the vote on single site accreditation or entire system accreditation are delayed until later in the meeting. Program Operations Committee made a NESC kitchen visit on June 4. Alan Bligh noted that the committee had a good time;all appreciated the new kitchen, and were impressed J by the skill and dedication that the kitchen staff displayed. The kitchen employees 11 employees and conducts two operations simultaneously. Food for the 9 senior centers bulk packaged and is trucked to each center.The home delivered meals production is 13 meals per minute; approximately 500 meals are delivered daily by R&R Delivery System. There is some concern because of a decrease in the units from Title XX program. ➢ Program Evaluation–Marion Ball Marion Ball reported the printers have not finished the comment cards. Donna Cisneros, Lucy Johnson,Marion Ball meeting this afternoon to work on the new yearly survey. They are open to comments and input for the new survey. ➢ Funding Resource–No Report ➢ Special Events–Lou Trlica reported in Helga's absence The Subcommittee met and will be working with Lou on Casino Night. Dates for the Casino Night discussed were in September or October. Concerns discussed were attendance and the change in management at the Bayfront Convention Center and accessibility to the facilities. Lou Trlica also discussed a City Wide Fair to involve the seniors, food tasting contests and compiling a cookbook incorporating the recipes of the entered food.This concept needs further development. Lou Trlica will bring more information to the next meeting. ➢ PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS–Elsa Munoz, Superintendent Activities need to be added to the calendar—Corpus Christi's Greatest Generation on July 22, 2004 ➢ Senior Center Updates Senior Community Services staff and Park and Recreation staff will host Park and Recreation Awareness Month in July. The focus is on an inclusion philosophy, adapting programs, services, and activities to include all. Activities will highlight several SCS programs: 1. Adult"Sock Hop"Dance,July 28,2004, at the American Bank Center. 2. Demonstration of activities offered at senior center that promote healthy aging in coordination with and held at Del Mar College in the Harvin Center, July 21, 2004. Activities include dancing, Sit and Be Fit low impact aerobics, home-grown gym. 3. Senior Day at Bayfest, September 25, 2004, 12:00-5:00 p.m. at the American Bank Center. V July is the 14th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disability Act. You will see publicity on Access Challenge,to simulate living with disability, at Padre Staples Mall. The Partnership for Aging Symposium in Kansas City,MO is in November 2004. Elsa has a flyer to send out. LCSS should consider sending representative to symposium. The R&R Delivery System is experiencing challenges because of rising gas prices. Tom Smith, Letty Ochoa, and Elsa Munoz are pursuing alternative options for meal delivery in the future. They will bring new options and recommendations to the committee for review. A Reception was held for four candidates for the position of Director for Park and Recreation Department. Several LCSS committee members attended. Sally Gavlik is being brought back for a second interview. She will be available to meet with staff next week between 10 a.m. and noon. Committee members present Lou Trlica,Donna Cisneros, Marion Ball, and Anna Gonzales commented that they were impressed with Sally Gavlik. OLD BUSINESS Elsa mentioned that the original copy of the Minutes would have grammatical and spelling errors corrected. NEW BUSINESS Be aware that all senior center operations hours for July 9,2004,will be open 9:00 a.m.— 2:00 p.m. due to Senior Corps Recognition Dinner. Be expecting a copy of a letter of complaint of an incident that occurred during the flooding during the raining last week. Staff informed center members that they may need to leave because of the weather. The vote on the Senior Center Accreditation issue was tabled until the next committee meeting. Member Announcements The City will be closed on Monday,July 5,2004. Public Comment V ffid TDHS has money for seniors age 60+who have a diagnosis of the need for a controlled environment(air conditioning). A doctor's note to include a need statement and diagnosis is needed. There being no further business,the meeting was adjourned.
