HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Leadership Committee For Senior Services - 04/07/2005 LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE FOR SENIOR SERVICES Oveal Williams Senior Center 1114 Martin Luther King April 7, 2005 Lou Trlica called the meeting to order and Donna Cisneros conducted roll call. The following committee members were absent: Hope Franklin, Barbara Deguzis, Catherine Harron, Teresa Martinez and Yvonne Mendez. MINUTES—March 3,2005 Rex Amick made a motion to approve the minutes and was seconded by Anna Gonzales. The motion was approved. NEW BUSINESS Special Commendation — Ms. Dollie Pawkett, Northwest Senior Center member was recognized for her outstanding achievement in winning first place in a national poetry contest. The contest was sponsored by the National Council on Aging and awards were recently held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. LCSS Chairperson, Lou Trlica presented Ms. Pawkett with a crystal plaque to honor her for this distinguished accomplishment. Members Retreat — Lou Trlica proposed a half-day retreat to review progress on 2004 priority issues; outline 2005 goals and objectives and network with other members. Roland Medrano made a motion in support of the retreat and it was seconded by Anna Gonzales. The motion was unanimously approved. Further details will be outlined at the next LCSS meeting. Community Relations - Lou Trlica noted that she had met Dr. Karen Middleton, with the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Leadership Class at the TRAPS conference. Dr. Middleton mentioned that her class had done an outstanding job in renovating the Broadmoor Senior Center with approximately$3,700.00 of in-kind support. The class also completed work at the Joe Garza Recreation Center. Dr. Middleton noted that her class had not received any recognition for their efforts. SCS staff will follow up on this matter. COMMITTEE REPORTS Program Operations — The Casino Night fundraiser is scheduled for August 26th. Members have been discussing contract specifications for the gaming tables and deposit guarantees. They have also pursued options for Grand Prize sponsorships and are researching costs for a trip for two valued at $1,000.00. Lou Trlica is working on marketing materials to include a flyer and sponsor letter in efforts to initiate solicitation of silent auction items and event sponsors. Funding & Resource — Rex Amick presented a graph which includes City, State, and Federal grant funding levels and outlines fundraising revenues for each program. (Please refer to handout) Special Events — Ms. Catherine Harron has agreed to serve as the new committee chairperson. SCANNED ` V STATE OF THE SENIOR CENTER ADDRESS Mr. Roosevelt Porter, Oveal Williams Center Site Council President was unable to attend the meeting. In his absence, Ms. Johnnie Hoodye,Vice-President provided a brief overview of the site council activities and accomplishments. She reported on their involvement with Martin Luther King and Black History Month events. They also sponsored an Easter Egg Hunt for 108 children at Washington,Brooks and Bethune day care centers. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Performance Data Review — The report data was unavailable due to report schedule conflicts. The report will be included with the next agenda packet. RSVP — Ward Kirkpatrick announced that as of March 31, 2005, they have 1200 registered volunteers and 149,000 hours of volunteer support compared to last year's total of 146,000 hours. This reflects a very significant increase of 3,000 hours to date. The Recruitment, Recognition and Retention tour to the Grand Casino Coushatta is scheduled for May 2nd _ 4th. Rates are $55.00 for volunteers and $65.00 for guests. The registration deadline is April 20th. Flyers have been sent to all Senior Centers and volunteers. The target date for distribution of the RSVP newsletter is April 29, 2005. SCP — Larry Imhoff reports that FY '06 federal funding notification has been received and that we will be submitting the annual grant renewal ahead of schedule. NESC — Tom Smith advised that there has been one meal delivery driver that has resigned due to the high cost of gasoline. He will continue working with the contractor to minimize any service disruptions. Senior Centers/Social Services—Lisa Oliver provided a progress report on the design phase of the Senior Center Improvement projects. Chuck Anastos is the architect assigned to our project and is working closely with staff in developing cost estimates and design. Center supervisors attended Benefits Counseling Certification training in March. Training topics included Long Term Care Counseling issues. Staff must successfully complete an exam to renew their certification. Plans for Older Americans Month events have been finalized and a schedule will be posted at all senior centers. The featured event is the Senior Health and Fitness Day which will be held on May 4th at the American Bank Center. UNFINISHED BUSINESS None LCSS MEMBER STATUS Elsa Munoz announced three vacancies on the committee as per the following: Pauline Johnson (deceased), Teresa Martinez and Yvonne Mendez (resignations). Ms. Munoz reviewed the biographical information data sheets of prospective candidates currently on file with the City Secretary's office: Dr. Nina Sisley; Hortencia Cisneros; Adolfo Saenz, and Miles Toren. Committee members submitted the following recommendations: Dr. Nina Sisley—Endorsed by Roland Medrano and seconded by Jerry Wagoner Adolfo Saenz—Endorsed by Apolonia Cantu and seconded by Anna Gonzales Judy McNamara—Endorsed by Lou Trlica and seconded by Anna Gonzales Gloria Scott—Endorsed by Johnnie Hoodye,OW Site Council Vice-President. Ms. Munoz advised that we would contact Ms. Scott to discuss her interest in serving on the committee as she does not currently have a Biographical Information Form on file. Hortencia Cisneros —Endorsed by Anna Gonzales and seconded by Roland Medrano. Staff will process the recommendations through the City Secretary's office. PUBLIC COMMENT Jerry Wagoner, LCSS member and site council representative of the Ethel Eyerly Senior requested another update regarding the restroom renovation at the center. Ms. Trlica advised that senior center improvement plans do not call for that item to be addressed at this time. Staff reported at last month's meeting that new facility improvement projects are not on the division's three year planning cycle. Department priorities will focus on CDBG (Community Development Block Grant funds) and Bond projects. As per the estimate provided by architect Chuck Anastos,the restroom project could cost up to $150,000.There is currently no funding source for the restroom project. It was also noted that approximately $25,000 was recently expended on the purchase of new tables and chairs for the Ethel Eyerly Senior Center. There are several other Senior Center improvement project and equipment purchases that are currently pending funding approval. Anna Gonzales announced that the Latino Education Project will be hosting their 7th Annual Health Conference on Friday, April 22nd, from 8:00 a.m.—3:00 p.m. The Crown Club Gala Dance will be held at the Lindale Senior Center on April 8th, from 6:00 p.m.—9:00 p.m. Lou Trlica announced that the new mayor (Mayor Henry Garrett) will be installed on Tuesday, April 12th and all members are invited to attend. A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Rex Amick and seconded by Roland Medrano. The motion was approved.
