HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Leadership Committee For Senior Services - 02/05/2009 RA1 7 E:GC1, Leadership Committee for Senior Services 2009 Meeting Minutes Lindale Senior Center CITY SECRETARVS OFFICE Thursday, February 5, 2009 A quorum of members was present and the meeting was called to order at 3:43 p.m. by Marion Ball, Secretary. ►Roll Call Roll call was conducted by Marion Ball, Secretary. ▪Consider Committee Member Attendance Issues Marion Ball addressed the absence of Hilarion Villanueva on January 14, 2009, Mr. Villanueva stated that he was unable to attend because he was in the hospital at that time. The LCSS unanimously excused the absence. *MINUTES Committee members reviewed the January 2009 meeting minutes. Vicki Garza motioned to approve the minutes as written. Miltan Martiz seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved. Dotson Lewis mentioned that he did not receive the agenda or the minutes that were sent out to everyone on Monday. Elsa Munoz stated she will make sure that his correct email address is updated. *STATE OF THE SENIOR CENTER ADDRESS Mrs. Aldefa Martinez, Lindale Site Council President, was unable to attend the meeting. Mary Ann Mondragon, Lindale Senior Center Supervisor presented a comprehensive report of the activities, classes and special events hosted at the Lindale Senior Center. Please see attached report. *COMMITTEE REPORTS (Written reports are to be submitted to the Secretary prior to each meeting) Program Operations Dotson Lewis announced that he was elected as Chairperson of the Program Operations Subcommittee by the members of that committee. Mr. Lewis reported that the subcommittee discussed the Senior Center Accreditation process and funding requirements. They also reviewed the issue of nontraditional hours of operation for the Senior Centers for new classes. He shared that the senior centers will be hosting new fitness classes and one of these classes will require the Ethel Eyerly Senior Center to open earlier. Lisa Oliver also announced that staff is in the process of expanding the fitness program to the other centers. Mr. Lewis mentioned how popular fitness classes are right now. Mr. Lewis also reported that the Senior Center Site Council Election process will begin soon. The subcommittee will be meeting next Monday to review and update the election policies. Program Evaluations Miltan Martiz reports that two hundred eighty nine "How Are We Doing" survey cards were submitted. Northwest Senior Center and Oveal Williams Senior Center did not submit any surveys this month. Two hundred eighty two respondents were completely satisfied and seven were unsatisfied. There were three complaints about the odors in the restrooms at the Garden Senior Center. SCANNED 11110 Ms. Martz stated that she has personally observed the restroom issues at that center and is concerned about the need for improvement in cleanliness and sanitation. Other survey comments suggested that we install an air sanitizer in the exercise room and suggestion for changing the nutrition program menu. FundinglSpecial Events Mary Ann Mondragon, Lindale Senior Center Supervisor, proposed a Community Fair event to raise funds for the 2009 Holiday Dinner. The estimated cost of the 2008 Holiday Dinner was approximately $7,000.00. Ms. Mondragon outlined event details to include a rummage sale, arts and crafts and food booths to be hosted at the Greenwood Senior Center. Ms. Miltan asked where the items from the rummage sale would come from and noted that the Al Amin Shrine host their Rummage Sale they donate any items that are not sold. She suggested that we investigate the possibility of securing some items from them. Ms. Mondragon stated that should explore that option and also invite the senior center members and the community to also donate items. Leticia Ochoa suggested that March 7, 2009 would be an ideal date to host the event since it is at the beginning of the month. She noted that people receive their checks around that time and others will also be receiving their income tax returns. Donna Rodriguez made a motion to endorse this fundraising event. Hilarion Villanueva seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved. ,SCS Division Program Report Lisa Oliver reported on the new fitness programs that are being offered at the senior centers. The Garden Senior Center has introduced the"Any Body Fitness" class and already have twenty members who have joined the sessions. A Fit over Fifty Fitness class will also be offered later this month at Zavala, Greenwood and Ethel Eyerly senior centers. The components of the Fit over Fifty Fitness class include Cardio, Strength and Balance. The class can accommodate approximately 20-25 members per session. ▪Unfinished Business ▪New Business: LCSS Member Reappointments It was noted that Dotson Lewis, Donna Rodriguez and Theresa Swirenko accepted the reappointment to the LCSS at the January meeting. LCSS New Member Appointments Elsa Munoz reported that the majority of candidates for the LCSS vacancies are in the Community At Large designation. There is currently one vacancy for that category at this time. Ms. Munoz advised the LCSS to consider a realignment of current member designations to accommodate additional vacancies in the Community At Large category. The proposed realignment considerations were outlined as follows: Vicki Garza— RSVP; Ruth Perez - Direct Service Agency and Dotson Lewis - Senior Center Member. Mr. Lewis stated that his preference would be to remain in his current designation as a Community At Large representative. Ms. Garza made a motion to change the designations as previously outlined with the exception of Mr. Lewis as requested. Mr. Lewis seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved. Ms. Munoz distributed the new member biographical summary and election matrix for review and consideration in filling three vacancies for the Community At Large representative; one vacancy for the Direct Service Agency representative and one vacancy for the Senior Companion Program representative. The ballots were tabulated and the LCSS endorsements are as follows: Community At Large representatives: Cecilia G. Huerta; Sherri Darveaux and Bethany L. Rabinowitz. Direct Service Agency representative: Rita Sonia Padron 2 • `r v Senior Center Member representative. Servando R. Dimas. There were no Biographical Information Forms submitted for the Senior Companion Program Representative, therefore, that vacancy will remain vacant. Ms. Ball announced that the next order of business is the election of officers for the LOSS. Mr. Lewis made a motion to table the election until the March meeting.
