HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Leadership Committee For Senior Services - 11/05/2009 nt `�dership Committee for Senior S`i RECEIVED Meeting Minutes 3rd Floor Parks and Recreation Conference Room FEB 1 0 2010 Thursday, November 5, 2009 CITY SECRETARY'S OFFICE ► A quorum of members was present and the meeting was called to order at 3:35 p.m. by Dotson Lewis, LCSS Chairperson. ►Roll Call Roll call was conducted by Rosario Medina, Senior Community Services Administrative Assistant. Lindsey Edwards, Vicki Garza, Miltan Martz, Ruth Perez, Theresa Swirenko and Marylin J. Upmanyu were absent. ►Consider Committee Member Attendance Issues City Secretary's Office will be sending a letter of termination to Ruth Perez based on her absences. IN-MINUTES Committee members reviewed the October 2009 meeting minutes. Donna Rodriguez made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Cecilia Huerta seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved. ►New Business: Mr. Lewis reported that due to Micheal Ramsey's resignation we needed to elect a new Vice- Chairperson. Donna Rodriguez nominated Adelfa Martinez for Vice-Chairperson. Cecilia Huerta made a motion to elect Adelfa Martinez as Vice-Chairperson. Donna Rodriguez seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved. Mr. Lewis stated there is one (1) vacancy for a Community at Large Representative that needs to be filled. Patricia Byrd endorsed Arnold Villarreal, Cecilia Huerta endorsed Maria Clarissa Lopez and Sherri Darveaux endorsed Esperanza (Hope) Lopez. Ms. Darveaux suggested that the committee submit more than one recommendation to the City Council to provide them with options for final appointment. Mr. Lewis stated that the committee should recommend a first choice, second choice and third choice. Ms. Byrd made the motion to recommend Arnold Villarreal for the LCSS first choice, Maria Clarissa Lopez as second choice and Esperanza (Hope) Lopez as third choice. Cecilia Huerta seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously approved. ►COMMITTEE REPORTS (Written reports are to be submitted to the Secretary prior to each meeting) Funding/Special Events Mrs. Huerta reported on the Meet and Greet Social Event that was held Thursday, October 8, 2009. There was an outstanding bill for the cash bar of$220.00 and the total amount collected at the event was $246.00. Mrs. Huerta announced that Physician's Health Choice would like to host next years Meet and Greet Social Event. The Holiday Dinner budget goal of$10,000.00 has not been reached. Therefore, event plans were downsized accordingly. Mrs. Huerta reports that the regular program meal will be served. She also mentioned that Senior Community Services is on the Food Bank recipient list for fresh turkey. If they do not receive the turkey then we will serve turkey breast. The cost of the guest ticket for the Holiday Dinner is $6.00 and reservations may be made at the senior centers. Mrs. Huerta announced that tickets will not be reissued if lost. Donations of door prizes are greatly appreciated. Cosmos Hospice will be sponsoring door prizes for the bingo. Mrs. Huerta mentioned the DJ has already been booked SCANNED for$100.00 and a photo a`wwill also be included at the dinner. At&T Pioneers will be donating the center pieces. Physician's Health Choice will be donating a Wii Console for the winner of the Christmas Tree Forest Decorating Contest. Mrs. Huerta said that a new spirit stick will be made for the Spirit Stick Rally. Mrs. Huerta reported that the parking cost has still not be determined at this time. Program Operations Dotson Lewis reported that the draft copy of the Standardized Senior Center By-Laws has been completed and will be distributed to all members for feedback and input. A copy will also be given to each site council for their feedback as well. Ms. Byrd announced that she is teaching a computer class on Saturdays at Del Mar College. Mr. Lewis mentioned that he will be speaking with Lisa Oliver, Senior Services Supervisor, regarding the possibility of teaching a Introduction to Computer class and also offering a Spanish class at some of the senior centers. Program Evaluation Adelfa Martinez reported on the "Senior Community Services Cares About You" survey cards for October 2009 as follows: Center Name Survey Cards Satisfied Unsatisfied Submitted Broadmoor Senior Center 0 0 0 Ethel Eyerly Senior Center 2 2 0 Garden Senior Center 0 0 0 Greenwood Senior Center 3 3 0 Lindale Senior Center 15 10 5 Northwest Senior Center 0 0 0 Oveal Williams Senior Center 12 12 0 Zavala Senior Center 1 1 0 Total 33 28 5 ►SCS Division Program Report: Ms. Munoz reported that the Broadmoor Senior Center is officially under construction. There is not a tentative date for the project to be completed.
