Library Board Meeting
February 9,2010

CALL TO ORDER
Michael Flores called the meeting to order at 1:18 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion for approval of the minutes of January 12, 2010 was made by Natalie Rogen and
seconded by Larry Jordan with the following corrections: Dr. Elovitz and Mr. Martin were
absent. Motion passed unanimously.
Friends of the Library
The Friends will mail another membership renewal letter in the upcoming weeks. There are
approximately 75 members that have not renewed. There are a total of 220 current members.
Mrs. Rogen added that if the 75 members renew it would be the highest membership Friends has
had in several years. Mr. Martin suggested that current members invite a friend to become a
Friend.
Director's Report
Mrs. Garcia reported that there was a walk through done at Greenwood Library with staff from
Engineering Department and Development Services and they addressed the Greenwood Library
Structural Assessment Report. Engineering Department is currently negotiating the contract with
the Architect.
Old Business
Staff has not heard back from Del Mar College and Texas A&M Corpus about students be able
to volunteer at the library. Dr. Garza will be contacting Laura Garcia on a possibility having
West Oso ISD students volunteer. Library staff will work on a schedule to train volunteers once

they get students' information. Volunteers are needed to help with computer classes, shelf books
and with Children's Programs. Volunteers will be interviewed and screened. Dr. Garza stated
that some students from West Oso ISD are required to have community hours for their
distinguished plan. Mrs. Garcia reported that the two Public Service areas downstairs have been
merged to one due to staff shortages.
New Business
Motion to excuse Dr. Elovitz and Mr. Martin from last meeting was made by Natalie Bogen and
second by Barbara Head. Motion passed unanimously. Mr. Flores inquired if 1:15 p.m.meeting
time worked well for all members or if they would like to change the meeting time. Members
agreed to continue meeting at 1:15 p.m.
Public Comment
Ken Kellar,President of Friends of the Library,invited board members to join the Friends of
CCPL. The following are some of the programs that the Friends will be presenting:
• The Inez and Kemp Adams Texas History Series in March—
A. Dr. Paul A. Hutton—he has written and narrated television documentaries in the
History Channel.
B. Mexican Army in Texas—Dr.Gregg J. Dimmick author of the Sea Mud
C. Dr.Jesus F.de la Teja—History Professor at Texas State University and author of
Tejano Leadership in Mexican and Revolutionary Texas
• 10th Anniversary at Harte Library
• Children's Book Festival in April
• Big Read—National Endowment for the Arts Program
Mr. Kellar added that these programs are very beneficial to the community and over 2000
children have attended similar programs in the past years. Mr.Kellar added that library staff has
helped in all the programs. Board members thanked Mr. Keller and the Friends for bringing
these programs and assisting the community.
Motion was made for meeting adjournment at 1:45 p.m.
