Library Board Meeting
October 10, 2012

Call to Order
Mr. Jordan, Pro tem Chair, called the meeting to order at 1:21 p.m.
Approval of Minutes
Motion for approval of the minutes of September 12, 2012 was made by Paul Altheide and seconded by
Dr. Maiv Jane Garza. It passed unanimously.
Friends of Library
Natalie Rogen reported that the Friends newsletter was mailed out and membership renewals are coming
in. The Friends annual meeting will be on November 17 "' at Ben F. McDonald Public Libraiv. Maiv
Gleason, Executive Director of Literacy Council, and Dorothea Castanon, McDonald Public Libraiv
Branch Manager, will be the key speakers. Laura Garcia stated that staff is working on a poster that will
be displayed at all libraries to generate new Friend's membership. Mrs. Rogen stated that over 1000
attended the dedication event at the McDonald Public Libraiv held September 22
Director's Report
Mrs. Garcia reported that the agenda renaming Northwest Libraiv to Owen R. Hopkins Public Libraiv is
scheduled to go before the City Council on October 23r The agenda will be scheduled as a consent item
for City Council's approval on October 30 "'
The Music of South Texas program will be on Sunday, October 20, at 1:00 p.m., at the McDonald Public
Libraiv. The KIII Channel 3 Domingo Show, which airs at 10:30 a.m., will be interviewing the presenters
and broadcasting remotely from McDonald Libraiv. The event is sponsored by Humanities of Texas and
Friends of CCPL. Tim Tingle, Texas Stoiy Teller programs, will be Saturday, October 27 "' at Haite (2
p.m.), Garcia (4 p.m.) and Northwest Public Libraries (6:30 p.m.). Mrs. Garcia stated that board members
can go to the libraiv s website to view other upcoming events.
Dr. Maiv Jane Garza reported that the McDonald Libraiv dedication was well attended. The Pepe Serna
program, which was held the next day, was also well attended and vein successful. Mrs. Garcia reported
that Dr. Elovitz, Mr. Flores, and Mrs. Rogen are eligible for reappointment in November. Mrs. Rogen
stated she is interested in reappointment. The board agreed to meet the first Wednesday of next month to
review applications and recommend name(s) to City Council. Sylvia Sanchez will email board members
the applications the staff receives from City Secretaiv s Office.
New Business
Motion was made by Dr. Mary Jane Garza and seconded by Roberta Sewell to excuse Catherine
MacLachlan from last month's meeting. Motion passed unanimously.
