HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Library Board - 08/06/2013 Minutes Library Board Meeting August 6,2013 MEMBERS PRESENT: STAFF PRESENT: John Keys Laura Garcia, Interim Director Lariv Jordan Sylvia Sanchez, Secretaiv Dr. Mai v Jane Garza Roberta Sewell Natalie Rogen Sue Donahoe MEMBERS ABSENT: Paul Altheide Dr. Stuart Elovitz Call to Order Mr. John Keys called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m. Approval of Minutes Motion for approval of the minutes of June 11, 2013 was made by Dr. Maiv Jane Garza and second by Lany Jordan. Motion passed unanimously. Friends of Library Mrs. Rogen stated that there was not a Friends meeting in June. She was unable to attend the July meeting because she was out of state. Mrs. Garcia reported that there was not a quorum in the Friends meeting in July. Director's Report Mrs. Garcia reported that the Summer Reading Programs were veiN- successful. The attendance of 13,427 surpassed last year's attendance of 9,183. Mrs. Garcia added that the final attendance numbers will be completed within a week—3 branch libraries had there closing programs this past week and final numbers have not been added to the report. The Family Book Festival, a partnership program with the Art Center, was held July 27"' and approximately 800 were in attendance. Mrs. Garcia added that the following are the other statistics that were surpassed: Ta= Actual Young Adult and Adult programming 180 543 Material Circulation 750,000 763,124 Electronic materials circulated 25,000 38,000 Children's Programming (yearly) 1,000 1,439 Children attending programs (yearly) 29,000 48,000 Partnership Programs 10 53 Number of Libraiv visitors 710,000 798,205 Mrs. Garcia reported that Dr. Maiv Jane Garza invited staff to attend the Del Mar Education Priority One televised program. Dorothea Castanon, McDonald Libraiv Branch Manager, and Mrs. Garcia attended and promoted libraiv programs and other libraiv services. Mrs. Garcia reported that the Food for Fines agenda is scheduled for council approval August 20. September is National Libraiv Card Sign up and National Hunger Awareness month. The Food for Fines Drive will be held at the libraiv in September. Food for Fines is a partnership between Libraiv and the Food Bank of Corpus Christi. All food items will go to support the Food Bank and Senior Community Services. Non-perishable food items will be accepted to clear only current overdue libraiv fees. Each donated item will equal $1 in overdue fees. Items must be commercially packaged, labeled and current. Fees that will not be forgiven are lost or damaged, replacement of libraiv card, printing, Inter-Libraiv Loan(ILL) or book sale fees. Mrs. Garcia added that the libraiv has $343,198 in overdue fines. The amendment to the Community Development Block Grant that specifies the improvement for the public elevator and entrance ramp at La Retama Central Libraiv is scheduled for Council approval in late August. IMPACT grant that was awarded to the libraiv will start in September. Staff will start the Tech Children's programs in branch libraries using NABI tablets. The board agreed to meet at Ben F. McDonald Public Libraiv in September. BNTlaws and Articles will remain on the agenda. New Business Motion was made by Dr. Mary Jane Garza and seconded by to excuse Larry Jordan and Sue Donahoe from June's meeting. Motion passed unanimously. Public Comment None.
