Members Present: Julia Stafford, Abigail Bair, Diana Broyles, Rachel Buck, Natalie Rogen and Brian Solarek
Members Absent: John Keys, Sue Donahoe, and Dr. Stuart Elovitz
Staff Present: Laura Z. Garcia, Library Director and Sylvia Sanchez, Secretary
Call to Order: Julia Stafford called the meeting to order at 10:35 a.m.
Approval of Minutes
Motion for approval of the December minutes was made by Diana Broyles and seconded by Abigail Bair. Motion passed
unanimously.
Director's Report
Mrs. Garcia distributed copies of the Flash Fiction Issue I, Volume 1 which was held at the Janet F. Harte Library and led by Sue
Donahoe. She will be leading a Flash Fiction program at the Teen BookFest by the Bay scheduled at Ray High School on
February 28, 2015. Other Flash Fiction library programs will be scheduled in the coming year. The Friends annual meeting will
be held at the Neyland Library on January 22. During the meeting there will be a demonstration of the 3D printer and the
Magic Planet globe. The first program using the 3D printer will be offered at the Children's Book Festival in April. The Friends
meeting will be followed by the second annual Sue Stanford Memorial program,which will be a marionette performance of the
timeless classic Pinocchio. Mrs. Garcia distributed a copy of the December 1St Caller Times library column promoting
programing at the Garcia Library and the Friends of Corpus Christi Public Libraries. If the Caller Times wants to continue the
column, the Neyland Library will be featured in January. Mrs. Garcia reported that the library is partnering with the Success by
6 Coalition which consists of individuals from various local organizations. One of those organizations is the Regional Transit
Authority (RTA). Mrs. Garcia took the opportunity to discuss, with the RTA representative,the issues of transporting kids from
daycares and schools to the library. It is possible that RTA can be enlisted to transport kids to special library programs.
Friends Report
Mrs. Rogen distributed a draft of the annual membership flyer which will have photos of 2014 programs, information on the
1% donation match for online renewals done in December and possibly information about the upcoming Annual Meeting.
Staff hopes to finalize the flyer this week and mail it out Monday. Diana Broyles stated that the Retama Club will provide
cookies for the Annual Meeting. Mrs. Rogen reported that a $1000 grant was received from the McNeil Foundation; funds will
be used for STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering and Math) programs.
New Business
Mrs. Garcia stated that library staff will be at the Art Museum Christmas Tree Forrest. A table will be set up on library
programs and services. Rachel Buck suggested that Friends should have a square reader where membership or donation
payments can be processed. Ms. Buck added that she will donate a square reader to the library and staff will need a
smartphone to process payments. Mrs. Garcia stated she will ask Alex Hatley,Technology Manager, to meet with board
members to get the needed information.
A motion was made by Brian Solarek and seconded by Diana Boyles to excuse Julia Stafford, Abigail Bair and Rachel Buck from
the November meeting. Motion passed unanimously.
