January 6, 2015
Members Present: Julia Stafford,Abigail Bair, Diana Broyles, Sue Donahoe, Dr. Stuart Elovitz, and Brian Solarek
Members Absent: John Keys, Rachel Buck, and Natalie Rogen
Staff Present: Laura Z. Garcia, Library Director and Sylvia Sanchez, Secretary
Call to Order: Julia Stafford called the meeting to order at 10:32 a.m.
Approval of Minutes
Motion for approval of the December minutes was made by Abigail Bair and seconded by Sue Donahoe. Motion passed
unanimously.
Friend's Report
Mrs. Garcia reported that the Friends received an anonymous$5000 donation through the Coastal Bend Community
Foundation. Also received was a $500 donation. To date approximately$7,100 has been received since the membership
renewal drive started last month. The annual Friend's meeting will be held at Neyland Library on January 22 at 5 p.m. There
will be a demonstration of the 3D printer and the Magic Planet interactive video globe. The meeting will be followed by a
marionette performance of Pinocchio by the Carranza puppeteers.
Director's Report
Mrs. Garcia reported that it was decided not to solicit, after all,for the Friends during the Art Museum of South Texas
Christmas Tree Forrest event. Due to retirements, the Library will be advertising for three positions: Sr. Management
Assistant, who oversees the library's budget;the Courier and a Library Assistant. Alex Hatley is currently handling some of the
responsibilities of the Sr. Management Assistant and the La Retama Central custodian is taking care of the Courier's
responsibilities. The first Planetarium program will be held at the McDonald Library on January 17 at 1 p.m. Dave Nuss will be
presenting a Kids Healthy Eating program at Hopkins at 7 p.m. today and tomorrow at 4 p.m. at La Retama Central. Diana
Broyles stated that the Texas Tropical Trails group visited the La Retama Central Library and toured the Inez Adams Historical
Gallery and the Local History Department. She stated that former staff member Alice Nixon conducted the tour for the group.
Next month's Caller Times article will be featuring Hopkins Library and the Teen Bookfest. Abigail Bair suggested that the Teen
Bookfest poster be posted by the third week of January.
New Business
A motion was made by Diana Broyles and seconded by Brian Solarek to excuse John Keys, Sue Donahoe and Dr. Elovitz from
December's meeting and excuse John Keys, Abigail Bair and Natalie Rogen from today's meeting. Motion passed unanimously.
Public Comment
Dr. Hatcher Chalkley, resides at 3038 Santa Fe, stated that this is the month the Library Board submits the annual report. He
stated that it would be a good opportunity to bring forth library issues to the Council. Laura Garcia stated that she is working
on the annual report and is following the outline provided by the previous director. Mrs. Stafford offered to work on the
report and compile suggestions from the other board members. Laura Garcia will submit the report once it is completed.
