February 2, 2015
Members Present: Julia Stafford, Diana Broyles,Juanita Hernandez, Natalie Rogen, Brian Solarek, and Harris Worchel
Members Absent: Abigail Bair, Rachel Buck, and Leanne Libby
Staff Present: Laura Garcia, Library Director, and Sylvia Sanchez, Secretary
Call to Order: Julia Stafford called the meeting to order at 10:40 a.m.
Approval of Minutes
Motion to approve the December minutes was made by Natalie Rogen and seconded by Diana Broyles. Motion passed
unanimously.
New Board Members
Mrs. Stafford introduced Harris Worchel and Juanita Hernandez.
Friend's Report
Mrs. Rogen reported that Friends membership renewals has been steady. The second Teen Bookfest by the Bay will be
February 20 at Tuloso Midway High. There will be approximately 20 authors and a writing workshop.
The Children's Book Festival will be on April 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with authors Rosemary Wells and Kelly Bennett. There
will also be a performance by the Carranza Puppeteers and various community partners such as Success by Six and the Junior
League that will have activities. Afterwards at 4 p.m. a meet and greet with the authors will be held as part of the Annual
Friends meeting.
Director's Report
Mrs. Garcia distributed a copy of the Library Business Plan which has specified targets for each tasks. The online City
Performance Report will show all city departments' performance results and establishes transparency and accountability.
Members received a copy of the 2015 Library Board annual report that was submitted last month.
The community perception that La Retama Central Library closed during the 2011 budget cuts and became a Police facility
continues. In an effort to combat this perception, outside signage in prominent locations have been installed and programing
will continue to be developed. The library will be a voting site on March 1.
The Texas State Library Annual Report will be submitted by the recommended date of March 31St,the due date is April 30tH
Staff is working with the Budget Department to implement the new Zero Based Budget for next fiscal year.
New Business
Motion nominating Julia Stafford as Board Chair and Brian Solarek as Co-Chair was made by Diana Broyles and seconded by
Natalie Rogen.
Motion to excuse Abigail Bair and Leanne Libby from today's meeting was made by Brian Solarek and seconded by Natalie
Rogen. Motion passed unanimously.
