February 3, 2015
Members Present: John Keys, Abigail Bair, Diana Broyles, Sue Donahoe, Jessica Hamilton, and Natalie Rogen
Members Absent: Julia Stafford, Rachel Buck, and Brian Solarek
Staff Present: Laura Z. Garcia, Library Director and Sylvia Sanchez, Secretary
Call to Order: John Keys called the meeting to order at 10:35 a.m.
Approval of Minutes
Motion for approval of the January minutes was made by Abigail Bair and seconded by Diana Broyles with the following
changes: A motion was made by Diana Broyles and seconded by Brian Solarek to excuse John Keys,Sue Donahoe and Dr. Elovitz
from December's meeting and excuse John Keys, Rachel Buck and Natalie Rogen... Motion passed unanimously.
Mr. Keys introduced Jessica Hamilton, who has worked at the Caller Times for several years.
Friend's Report
Mrs. Rogen reported that the Friends Annual meeting was well attended and thanked the La Retama Club for donating cookies.
Susan Lawson is the new President of the Friends. Library staff demonstrated the 3D printer and Magic Planet interactive
video globe.The Friends will be sponsoring 3D programing. The meeting was followed by the marionette performance of the
classic Pinocchio in celebration of the 2nd annual Sue Stanford memorial. The attendance was 510 between 4:30 and the end
of the program. There are approximately 50 people that have not renewed membership and a renewal letter will be mailed in
a few weeks.
Director's Report
Mrs. Garcia reported that the interview process for the Sr. Management Assistant has been finished, with selection being
made by the end of the week. The first planetarium program was done at McDonald Library on January 17. Three additional
sessions were added due to the high attendance. Other showings will be scheduled throughout the community. One program
is scheduled at Fannin elementary on February 20. Programs require library staff as well as any other assistance provided at
the site. Success by 6 Coastal Bend Early Childhood Coalition is another partnership the library is developing.
As part of this partnership the library will provide two book collections at United Way funded daycares. One collection will be
for daycare staff to use with the children the other will be for parents to borrow for home use.The "Little Library" program is
the name of the collection parents will have access to. A Family Literacy event is scheduled at McDonald Library on February
21 to kick off this partnership. Mrs. Garcia distributed posters of the Teen Bookfest scheduled at Ray High school on February
28. Staff will be at attending community events such as Breaking the Norm. The Texas Folklife Big Squeeze program is
scheduled for March 8 at McDonald Library. AAUW will have their$1 Nook Book Sale on February 26 thru February 28. The
Library received an ILL reimbursement from the state and the agenda item is scheduled to go to before the Council on
February 17. The Annual Board report was emailed to the City Secretary and to each board member.
New Business
Ms. Bair stated that she can assist the Friends with the marketing for new membership. Mrs. Rogen invited her to attend next
Friends meeting so she can address the Friends board members to consider a Friends Marketing Campaign. Mrs. Hamilton
stated that Friends should attend events where young adults and teens attend for example—Mardi Graz Festival,Jazz Festival
and other spring break events. Mrs. Garcia stated that Friends are considering getting book bags, cups and/or pens or similar
items to give away when members renew or become new members.
A motion was made by Sue Donahoe and seconded by Natalie Rogen to excuse Brain Solarek and Rachel Buck from today's
meeting. Motion passed unanimously.
