April 7, 2015
Members Present: John B. Keys,Julia Stafford, Abigail Bair, Rachel Buck, Diana Broyles, Sue Donahoe,Jessica Hamilton,
Natalie Rogen, and Brian Solarek
Members Absent: None.
Staff Present: Norma Gonzalez, Public Service Manager and Sylvia Sanchez, Secretary
Call to Order: John Keys called the meeting to order at 10:31 a.m.
Approval of Minutes
Motion for approval of the February minutes was made by Rachel Buck and seconded by Brian Solarek. Motion passed
unanimously.
Friend's Report
Mrs. Rogen reported that the 2015 Children's Book Festival will at Neyland Library on Saturday, April 18, 2015 from 10 a.m. to
3 p.m. The Digital Globe Demonstration, Maker Space-31D printing, Storytelling and other fun activities are scheduled. Rickey
Pittman and Kelly Bennett are the guest authors. Mrs. Rogen added that the Teen Bookfest held at Ray High School was a
great success. Planning for the next year's Teen Bookfest program will start in a few months. The committee has made some
notes on what is needed for next year to make the programs run smoother.
Director's Report
Mrs. Gonzalez reported that the library is partnering with Success by 6 Group and Laura Garcia is attending a conference in
Dallas to get further information on the Success by 6 programs. The Summer Reading programs will be held from June 8—July
18. The theme is Every Hero has a Story. Mrs. Gonzalez distributed a rough draft of the flyer. Joshua Romeo and Jean
Meadors, Children Librarians, will be attending the Texas Library Association (TLA) Conference in Austin next week. They will
be promoting the STEM Programs and will part of a panel answering questions the audience might have about the program.
Laura Garcia will also attend TLA and will meet with the Genealogy group about programs which can possibly take place in
Corpus Christi. Council members will be reading to children from Bethune Day Care and Greenwood Molina Children's Center
on Tuesday of next week at 11:30 a.m. A Texas Humanities grant was submitted for an oral history project. Grant will be
award in July and it will be used for oral history interviews,the digital audio will then be available through a website. The
magic planet digital globe demonstrations will be at Garcia Arts Center this month and starting in May for the following
locations: Evans Elementary, Del Mar Early Childhood Center,Tuloso-Midway Elementary, Central, Neyland, Hopkins and
Harte Libraries. The dome demonstrations has had well attendance, since programs have started there has been
approximately 400 students.
New Business
Mrs. Rogen stated that Ms. Bair had not been able to attend Friends meeting due to illness. Mrs. Rogen stated she does have
the name of the graphic designer but has not been able to make contact with him. Mr. Keys stated that next month there will
be a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Presentation at 1 p.m. in La Retama Room. RFID is the wireless use of
electromagnetic fields that will assist in tracking library materials and is a more efficient way to check in and out material at the
libraries. Mr. Keys reported that next month's board meeting could be schedule before the presentation and then proceed to
the RFID presentation. Motion to scheduled next board meeting at 12:30 p.m. was made by Sue Donahoe and seconded by
Rachel Buck. Motion passed unanimously. Motion to excuse Julia Stafford from February's meeting was made by Rachel Buck
and seconded by Natalie Rogen. Motions passed unanimously.
