Director's Report
Christus Spohn Health Plan covered the full amount of$3,100 for the Summer Reading Club (SRC) bags. The 2015 SRC was very
successful, there were 16,152 in attendance with 373 scheduled programs. The Wild Things Zoofori closing program was very
popular, with over 3,000 in attendance. In 2014, 200 children registered for the SRC at La Retama Central Library, this year we
had 350. Our grant application to become a Family Place Libraries location was accepted by the Texas State Library and
Archives Commission. TSLAC is funding$12,000 for training, in April 2016, at the Family Place Library Institute in Long Island
and $6,000 in furnisher and materials to implement the Family Place Libraries concept. Family Place Libraries promotes a
national model for transforming public libraries into welcoming, developmentally appropriate early learning environments for
very young children, their parents, and caregivers. The program will be centralized at La Retama Central or McDonald Library.
Joshua Romero, Children's Librarian at McDonald Library, will be facilitating the afterschool and story time programs at La
Retama Central starting in September. On October 10, which is National Star Wars Reads Day, the Library will hold a Star Wars
Reads Day event at La Retama Central, in partnership with Junior League and Success by 6. Ms. Bair stated that the Motorcycle
Ride day is scheduled that day and they are expecting large crowds. Mrs. Garcia stated that Junior League will be publicizing
the Star Wars Reads event. The Junior League and Success by 6 will also be helping with next year's Children's Book Festival.
Mrs. Garcia reported that this month's Caller Times article will promote Food for Fines which takes place in September as well
as National Library Card Sign-up Month. Mrs. Garcia invited board members to view a presentation in which the library was
