Members Present: Julia Stafford, Rachel Buck, Diana Broyles, Natalie Rogen, and Brian Solarek
Members Absent: John Keys and Abigail Bair
Staff Present: Laura Garcia, Library Director, and Sylvia Sanchez, Secretary
Call to Order: Julia Stafford called the meeting to order at 10:32 a.m.
Approval of Minutes
Motion for approval of the August minutes was made by Brian Solarek and seconded by Rachel Buck. Motion passed
unanimously.
Friend's Report
Mrs. Rogen reported that the Friends received a $1000 grant from Humanities Texas for the fourth annual La Musica del Sur de
Tejas\Music of South Texas symposium, which will be held at McDonald Library on October 11. Friends have allocated an
additional $2,200 for the program. A sample of the Flash Fiction writings that were done at the Teen Bookfest was distributed.
Mrs. Rogen stated that additional copies will be printed once the committee approves the final print. Mrs. Garcia stated that
another flash fiction session might be offered at the next Teen Bookfest.
Director's Report
Mrs. Garcia reported that September is Food for Fines month. Library patrons can donate nonperishable food items to clear
their overdue fines. September is also National Library Card Sign-up. The National Star Wars Read Day will be celebrated on
October 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at La Retama Central Library. The library is partnering with the Junior League and Success
by 6 for the event. Several organizations will be participating and offering a number of activities. Members from the 501st
Legion will be dressed in Star Wars regalia. Mayor Nelda Martinez will be presenting a literacy proclamation before the
program.
La Retama Central Library will be participating, for the first time, in a virtual genealogy conference. Libraries participating
throughout the state will host programs on different genealogy topics on October 16 from 12:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Participating libraries will link to the hosting library. La Retama Central Library will host a Hispanic topic which will be
presented by Arturo Cuellar from Salt Lake City, Family Search. Mr. Cuellar will also do programs on Saturday, October 17.
Children's programing will begin at La Retama Central Library on September 2. On Wednesday there will be two programs:
Music in Motion, ages 0-5 at 10:30; S.T.E.A.M. Team, grades K—5 at 4:00 p.m. On Thursdays a story and craft program will be
held at 10:30 a.m. Volunteers are being sought to start an after school tutoring program.
Board members will receive an email invitation to an appreciation reception which will be hosted by the Mayor and City
Council. Mrs. Sanchez requested verification of email addresses. Mrs. Garcia reported that water was found inside some of
the electrical junction boxes located on the first floor. The matter is being reviewed by facility maintenance.
New Business
Motion to excuse John Keys from September's meeting was made by Rachel Buck and second by Natalie Rogen. Motion
passed unanimously.
